David Rubenstein
David Mark Rubenstein is an American billionaire investor, philanthropist, author, interviewer, former government official, and cofounder of The Carlyle Group. He is also the controlling owner of the Baltimore Orioles and has held leadership positions at major cultural, educational, and policy institutions.
Records released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act show that Jeffrey Epstein and intermediary Boris Nikolic tried repeatedly to arrange meetings with Rubenstein between 2010 and 2012. Rubenstein and Epstein ultimately met once in November 2012, four years after Epstein’s Florida conviction and sex offender registration. Biography and Professional Background
Rubenstein was born in Baltimore and raised in a Jewish family of modest means. He attended Baltimore City College, graduated from Duke University in 1970, and earned his law degree from the University of Chicago in 1973. His professional identity combines law, government service, private equity, philanthropy, institutional governance, publishing, and media.
After law school, Rubenstein practiced at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. He later served as chief counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments. During the Carter administration, he worked as a deputy assistant to the president for domestic policy. After President Carter left office, Rubenstein returned to private practice.
In 1987, Rubenstein cofounded The Carlyle Group with William Conway Jr. and Daniel D’Aniello. Carlyle grew from a Washington investment firm into one of the world’s largest private capital managers. Nikolic said he answered that they had mutual friends. The next day, Nikolic summarized his conversation with Rubenstein as positive. July and August 2010: Peter Mandelson introduction discussions
Nikolic discussed connecting Rubenstein with Peter Mandelson and asked Epstein for his view. Epstein later suggested to Mandelson that he meet Rubenstein. Mandelson indicated that he believed Epstein did not like Rubenstein. Epstein then sought a telephone conversation and expressed a preference against leaving a permanent written record. July 2012: Photograph labeled for Rubenstein
An email account identified as Sarah K sent Epstein a photograph of a woman wearing a bathing suit on a beach. Epstein forwarded the message to Nikolic and indicated that it was for Rubenstein. Nikolic responded with an approving comment about the woman’s appearance. Some released versions redact the image more heavily than others.
The chain does not show Rubenstein as a sender or recipient. Rubenstein’s spokesperson said that Rubenstein never knew of, received, or saw the email. The evidence therefore establishes what Epstein sent to Nikolic and how Nikolic responded. It does not establish that the image reached Rubenstein, that he requested it, or that he knew it existed. November 26, 2012: Proposed dinner with Barak

No reviewed record establishes that Rubenstein paid Epstein, received money from Epstein, invested with Epstein, retained him as an adviser, or formed a business venture with him. The confirmed meeting was described as a discussion of philanthropic proposals, but Rubenstein’s spokesperson says he pursued none of them.
No evidence located for this article establishes that Carlyle invested in an Epstein controlled company because of the meeting or that Epstein invested in a Carlyle fund through this relationship. Public Statements and Responses
Rubenstein’s spokesperson, Chris Ullman, told reporters that Rubenstein had one meeting with Epstein for twenty minutes in Carlyle’s office. The spokesperson said the meeting was requested by people seeking Rubenstein’s participation in philanthropic endeavors and that Rubenstein pursued none of those proposals.
The spokesperson also said that the brief thank you email suggested a meeting between Rubenstein and Ehud Barak, but that the proposed meeting never occurred. He characterized Rubenstein’s involvement as limited to that interaction.
Regarding the July 2012 photograph, the spokesperson said Rubenstein had never received or seen the email from Nikolic and was unaware of it. The released chain supports the narrower fact that Rubenstein was not a visible sender or recipient. It cannot prove what Nikolic may have done outside the documented email chain, but no evidence of transmission to Rubenstein has been identified.
The spokesperson did not answer a question from The Chicago Maroon asking whether Rubenstein knew about Epstein’s 2008 conviction before the meeting. The absence of an answer does not establish either knowledge or ignorance. It remains an open factual question.
Legal Status
As of September 2026, no public record located for this article shows that Rubenstein has been charged with an Epstein related crime, named as a defendant in a civil action alleging participation in Epstein’s abuse, or found by a court to have facilitated Epstein’s trafficking operation.
The released documents do not accuse Rubenstein of sexual misconduct. They document scheduling, one meeting, short direct correspondence, and third party discussions. The photograph exchange warrants scrutiny because of Epstein’s history and the way he used women in communications, but the available chain does not establish receipt, knowledge, or a request by Rubenstein.
No legal liability can responsibly be inferred from a meeting alone. Any stronger conclusion would require evidence concerning knowledge, intent, assistance, financial activity, concealment, or participation.

- Rubenstein’s spokesperson says Rubenstein never received or knew about that image.
- Rubenstein’s spokesperson says no philanthropic proposal presented through the meeting was pursued.
What Evidence Does Not Establish
- That Rubenstein and Epstein were close friends.
- That more than one meeting occurred.
- That Rubenstein visited an Epstein residence.
- That Rubenstein traveled on Epstein’s aircraft, yacht, or other transportation.
- That Rubenstein requested, received, or saw the July 2012 photograph.
- That Rubenstein introduced Epstein to Carlyle investors or clients.
- That Carlyle accepted Epstein as an investor, adviser, or business partner.
- That Rubenstein and Epstein completed a donation or philanthropic project together.
- That the dinner with Ehud Barak occurred.
- That the proposed lunch with Larry Summers and Ehud Barak occurred.
- That Rubenstein knew about Epstein’s abuse or the full details of his prior criminal case.
- That Rubenstein facilitated or participated in Epstein’s sexual abuse or trafficking.
Why This Person Matters
Rubenstein’s file appearances show how Epstein attempted to enter established networks through trusted intermediaries. Nikolic spent more than two years discussing Rubenstein, proposing introductions, advising on timing, and trying to arrange a meeting. Epstein did not need a longstanding friendship to gain value. A brief meeting with an internationally prominent investor could be used to reinforce his image as a legitimate adviser and philanthropist.
The correspondence also demonstrates the difference between repeated scheduling and repeated contact. At least five attempts produced one short meeting. Counting every proposed breakfast, coffee, or dinner as an event would seriously overstate the relationship.
The photograph exchange is equally important as an evidence lesson. Epstein explicitly associated the image with Rubenstein, but the visible chain does not include Rubenstein. The name attached by Epstein is not proof that the named person requested or received the material. The spokesperson’s denial and the incomplete transmission record must appear beside the allegation.
Rubenstein’s institutional stature raises valid accountability questions. He chaired or governed organizations entrusted with public history, education, policy, and culture. The meeting took place after Epstein was a registered sex offender. The public therefore has a legitimate interest in whether due diligence occurred and what Rubenstein knew. Asking those questions is not the same as alleging participation in Epstein’s crimes.

- What specific projects, institutions, donation amounts, or structures did they propose?
- Are there meeting notes, visitor logs, calendars, memoranda, or internal Carlyle emails concerning the meeting?
- Who attended the twenty minute meeting besides Rubenstein and Epstein?
- Did Nikolic attend or receive a report afterward?
- Why did Epstein believe the July 2012 photograph was appropriate to label for Rubenstein?
- Did Nikolic forward, display, describe, or otherwise communicate the image outside the released email chain?
- Why did Epstein and Nikolic attempt to schedule at least five meetings during 2012?
- Did Rubenstein and Epstein communicate by telephone, text message, or through assistants outside the released emails?
- Did Rubenstein ever visit an Epstein property or attend another event with him?
- Did Epstein ever invest in a Carlyle fund or transact with a Carlyle affiliate through another entity?
- Did any Carlyle portfolio company, employee, adviser, or limited partner pursue a proposal introduced by Epstein?
- Did the Harvard Kennedy School fundraising discussion produce a donation from Glenn Dubin or another person?
- Were Rubenstein and Epstein both present at the December 2013 Vanity Fair event?
- Did any later contact occur after November 2012?
- Did investigators interview Rubenstein, Nikolic, or Carlyle personnel about the contact?
- Are additional relevant records sealed, redacted, withheld, or awaiting release?
- Did Nikolic ever invite Rubenstein to the proposed September 2012 lunch with Larry Summers and Ehud Barak, and did any version of that lunch occur?
- Did Rubenstein or his staff know that repeated scheduling efforts had been underway before Nikolic’s direct introduction?
