House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is one of the most powerful investigative committees in the United States Congress. Its jurisdiction allows it to investigate nearly any part of the federal government, including agencies involved in criminal investigations, corrections systems, and federal law enforcement operations.

Because of that sweeping authority, the committee has become increasingly important to researchers examining the Jeffrey Epstein case, the Epstein Files, and the federal government’s handling of the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.

In 2026 the committee began reviewing several aspects of the federal government’s handling of the Epstein case, including the investigation itself, the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death in federal custody, and the operation of sex-trafficking networks connected to the case.

Committee Jurisdiction

The House Oversight Committee is often described as the investigative arm of Congress. According to the committee’s official description, its mission is to ensure efficiency, accountability, and transparency across the federal government.

The committee has the authority to:

• issue subpoenas
• demand documents from federal agencies
• compel testimony from government officials
• hold investigative hearings
• refer evidence to the Department of Justice

Because of this authority, the committee is capable of reviewing matters related to:

• the Department of Justice
• the Federal Bureau of Investigation
• the Bureau of Prisons
• federal investigations into human trafficking networks

This jurisdiction places the committee in a position to investigate unresolved questions surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein investigation and the broader Epstein trafficking network.

Why the Committee Matters to EpsteinWiki

The committee has already taken direct steps related to the Epstein case.

In March 2026, the committee requested a transcribed interview with former Metropolitan Correctional Center guard Tova Noel, who was on duty the night Jeffrey Epstein died in federal custody.

Chairman James Comer stated that the committee was examining:

• mismanagement of the federal investigation into Jeffrey Epstein
• the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death
• federal responses to sex trafficking networks

These actions place the committee at the center of congressional oversight of the Epstein case.
