Branson’s positionContact was limited to a few group or business settings. He condemns Epstein’s conduct and says he would not have associated with him had he known the full facts.

Richard Branson owned one of the most recognizable private islands in the Caribbean. Jeffrey Epstein owned another only a short helicopter ride away.

In 2013, those islands became part of the same social circuit.

Released emails, schedules, photographs, and transportation records establish that Epstein visited Branson’s Necker Island, attended the Necker Cup charity tennis event, communicated directly with Branson, and hosted him for lunch on Little Saint James.

The most damaging evidence is not a rumor or an anonymous tip. It is an email attributed to Branson himself.

After a September 2013 meeting, Branson told Epstein that it had been “really nice” seeing him and invited him to return, adding that Epstein should bring his “harem.” In the same exchange, Branson offered a proposed public relations defense that would present Epstein’s conviction as a mistake involving a seventeen and a half year old woman, followed by punishment and rehabilitation.

That description was profoundly misleading. Epstein’s Palm Beach case involved allegations from numerous girls, some as young as fourteen. He had pleaded guilty to procuring a minor for prostitution and was a registered sex offender.

Branson’s representatives say Epstein arrived at a business meeting with three adult women whom he called his “harem.” They say Branson regrettably repeated Epstein’s language and understood Epstein’s case only through the minimized account Epstein provided.

The record does not establish that Branson participated in Epstein’s abuse, received a trafficked victim, or knew the scope of Epstein’s criminal conduct. It does establish something narrower and still important: Branson socially and professionally engaged with a convicted sex offender in 2013, welcomed him to Necker Island, visited Little Saint James, and offered advice that could have helped Epstein rehabilitate his public image.

Who Is Richard Branson?

Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson is a British entrepreneur best known as the founder of the Virgin Group.

Branson began his business career as a teenager with Student magazine. He later created a mail order record business, opened Virgin Records, and expanded the Virgin brand into music, aviation, telecommunications, rail transportation, hotels, space tourism, health clubs, and other industries.

Companies and organizations associated with Branson have included:

  • Virgin Records.
  • Virgin Atlantic.
  • Virgin Mobile.
  • Virgin Galactic.
  • Virgin Hotels.
  • Virgin Voyages.
  • Virgin Unite.

Branson was knighted in 2000 for services to entrepreneurship.

His Caribbean home, Necker Island, is a privately owned resort island in the British Virgin Islands. Branson has hosted business conferences, charity events, political figures, celebrities, athletes, and philanthropists there.

Necker Island is geographically separate from Little Saint James, Epstein’s property in the United States Virgin Islands, but the islands were close enough for travel by helicopter or boat.

How Branson Entered Epstein’s Orbit

The publicly available records place the most significant period of Branson and Epstein’s contact in 2013.

By that time, Epstein was not merely the subject of unresolved rumors. His criminal history was public.

Epstein had:

  • Been investigated by Palm Beach police beginning in 2005.
  • Been arrested in 2006.
  • Entered into a federal nonprosecution agreement in 2007.
  • Pleaded guilty in 2008 to state offenses, including procuring a person under eighteen for prostitution.
  • Served time in the Palm Beach County jail.
  • Registered as a sex offender.

Despite that history, Epstein was rebuilding his access to wealthy and influential people. Invitations to elite gatherings, charitable events, private islands, academic institutions, and business meetings helped him present himself as a rehabilitated financier and philanthropist.

Branson’s extensive business and charitable network made him precisely the kind of respected public figure whose company could assist that rehabilitation, whether or not Branson intended that result.

The September 2013 Necker Island Meeting

Released correspondence shows that Epstein visited Branson on Necker Island in September 2013.

In a September 11 exchange, Epstein thanked Branson for his hospitality and referred to public relations advice the two had discussed.

Branson responded that it had been “really nice” seeing Epstein and that he would be welcome again. He added:

“As long as you bring your harem!”

Reporting on the released correspondence states that the email followed a meeting on Necker Island the previous day.

A Virgin Group representative said Epstein had arrived with three adult women whom he referred to as his “harem.” The women reportedly did not participate in the business meeting. According to Branson’s representatives, Branson repeated Epstein’s term in the follow up email and regrets doing so.

This explanation addresses the origin of the word. It does not erase the tone of the exchange or the fact that Epstein’s conviction involving a minor was already public.

What the “Harem” Email Establishes

The email establishes several facts:

  • Branson and Epstein had met in person.
  • Epstein had received Branson’s hospitality on Necker Island.
  • The interaction was friendly enough for Branson to invite Epstein back.
  • Branson used Epstein’s sexualized description of the women accompanying him.
  • Epstein and Branson discussed Epstein’s public image.

The email does not establish:

  • That any of the three women was underage.
  • That any of the women was trafficked.
  • That Branson had sexual contact with them.
  • That Branson knew any woman was being abused.
  • That Branson participated in Epstein’s trafficking operation.

The appropriate evidentiary conclusion is that the email documents a friendly, post-conviction relationship and deeply troubling judgment. It does not, by itself, prove participation in sexual crimes.

Branson’s Public Relations Advice to Epstein

The same email exchange contains a second issue that is more consequential than the “harem” remark.

Epstein apparently asked Branson for his thoughts about public relations. Branson suggested that Bill Gates could make a statement portraying Epstein as a brilliant adviser who had made a past mistake, served his punishment, learned his lesson, and committed no further offense.

Branson’s proposed framing described Epstein as having “slipped up” by sleeping with a seventeen and a half year old woman.

According to the released email described by Sky News, Branson suggested language along these lines:

“I think if Bill Gates was willing to say that you’ve been a brilliant advisor to him, that you slipped up many years ago by sleeping with a 17 1/2 year old woman and were punished for it, that you’ve more than learnt your lesson and have done nothing that’s against the law since…”

Branson added that Epstein appeared to have a “penchant for women,” but suggested there was nothing inherently wrong with that.

This advice treated Epstein’s criminal history as a consensual sexual encounter with a nearly eighteen year old woman.

That was not an accurate description of the publicly documented Palm Beach investigation.

Why the “Seventeen and a Half” Description Was Misleading

The Palm Beach police investigation involved numerous girls and young women.

The allegations included:

  • Payments to teenage girls for massages that became sexual.
  • Recruitment payments for bringing additional girls.
  • Repeated encounters at Epstein’s Palm Beach residence.
  • Victims as young as fourteen.
  • A system involving employees, recruiters, schedules, and cash payments.

Epstein pleaded guilty to procuring a person under eighteen for prostitution and solicitation of prostitution.

Calling this a single “slip up” with a seventeen and a half year old adult obscured the actual allegations and the age of other victims.

Branson’s representatives say Epstein presented the matter as a consensual encounter with someone who was nearly eighteen. They characterize Branson’s remarks as a general observation about rehabilitation after a person has served a sentence.

That explanation indicates Branson may have relied on Epstein’s self-serving account. It does not explain why a prominent business organization did not perform basic due diligence before hosting or advising a convicted sex offender.

Later records show that Virgin Unite did conduct such due diligence when Epstein proposed a charitable donation.

The Proposed Bill Gates Endorsement

Branson’s suggested public relations strategy contemplated Bill Gates publicly describing Epstein as a brilliant adviser and a man who had learned his lesson.

There is no evidence that Gates issued the proposed statement.

The reference is important because Epstein sought reputational restoration through prominent validators. A supportive statement from Gates or Branson could have reframed Epstein as:

  • A valuable adviser.
  • A philanthropist.
  • A rehabilitated offender.
  • A wealthy man with an ordinary interest in adult women.
  • Someone unfairly defined by a past mistake.

That proposed narrative omitted the pattern of allegations, the number of victims, the recruitment structure, the federal nonprosecution agreement, and the extraordinary leniency of Epstein’s sentence.

The email therefore belongs not only in Branson’s personal article, but also in the history of Epstein’s post-conviction reputation management campaign.

The Necker Cup

Records indicate that Epstein attended the 2013 Necker Cup, a charity tennis event held on Necker Island.

The event was not described as a private gathering arranged solely for Epstein. It attracted numerous participants, athletes, entertainers, donors, and guests.

A Virgin representative said the event was organized by a third party that rented Necker Island and typically drew approximately 150 attendees. Branson often played tennis and greeted participants.

Released calendars referenced:

  • “Richard Branson” during the week of October 14, 2013.
  • “Richard Branson, Necker Island” on October 20.
  • Epstein’s anticipated travel to Necker Island in November.

An Epstein Graph copy of EFTA02124635 describes an October 2013 email chain concerning Epstein’s possible attendance at the Necker Cup, a charitable donation, and event logistics.

The evidence establishes that Epstein was present at or associated with the event. It does not establish that every person attending the Necker Cup knowingly associated with Epstein or understood his history.

Branson, however, had direct correspondence with Epstein and had already discussed his criminal past and public reputation.

Branson’s November 2013 Trip to Little Saint James

The strongest location record places Branson at Epstein’s private island on November 29, 2013.

Epstein Data document EFTA02121371 contains an email chain between Epstein and Branson’s personal assistant, Helen Clarke.

On November 27, Clarke wrote that Branson wanted to know whether Epstein was still available on Friday and was considering accepting Epstein’s offer to provide helicopter transportation.

Epstein responded with logistical options. He explained that:

  • A helicopter was available.
  • Branson could clear customs in St. Thomas.
  • Travel from Necker to Epstein’s island would take approximately ten minutes after customs.
  • Boat travel could permit customs clearance in St. John.
  • They could meet elsewhere if Branson preferred.

Clarke later wrote that it would be “just Richard for lunch.”

The next day, she asked that the pickup occur at noon rather than 12:30 p.m.

This exchange is strong evidence of a planned Branson visit to Little Saint James.

The Little Saint James Calendar Entry

Epstein Data document EFTA00284786 contains Epstein’s schedule for Friday, November 29, 2013.

It records:

  • 12:00 p.m.: Larry to pick up Richard Branson from Necker Island and bring him to Little Saint James.
  • 12:30 p.m.: Lunch with Richard Branson on Little Saint James.

The correspondence and calendar corroborate one another.

A calendar entry alone does not always establish that a meeting occurred. Plans can change. In this instance, however, the detailed assistant correspondence, adjusted pickup time, transportation arrangements, and matching schedule provide substantial evidence that the visit proceeded.

Virgin representatives have acknowledged limited meetings with Epstein in group or business settings. They have not produced evidence that the November 29 lunch was canceled.

The Helicopter Records

Transportation records also document movement connected to Branson on November 29, 2013.

Reporting based on the released logs describes brief helicopter travel involving locations serving Necker Island, St. Thomas, and Epstein’s properties.

A Virgin spokesperson said Branson was on two brief helicopter trips but traveled alone on the relevant legs.

The distinction matters. A person can use an aircraft owned or arranged by Epstein without Epstein being present.

The transportation evidence supports Branson’s physical presence within Epstein’s island network. It does not prove illegal activity or establish who else attended the lunch.

How Many Times Did Branson Meet Epstein?

Virgin Group has described Branson’s contact with Epstein as limited to a few occasions.

Later reporting based on the DOJ files indicated that Epstein may have been hosted on Necker Island three times during 2013, including the Necker Cup.

The presently documented encounters include:

  1. A September 2013 business meeting on Necker Island.
  2. Epstein’s attendance at or around the 2013 Necker Cup.
  3. A November 29, 2013 lunch on Little Saint James.
  4. A photograph showing Branson with Epstein and Dean Kamen, apparently on Necker Island.

Some of these records may describe the same broader visits rather than four entirely separate meetings.

The evidence supports multiple contacts in 2013. It does not support describing Branson and Epstein as lifelong friends or constant companions.

The Photograph With Epstein and Dean Kamen

In December 2025, the House Oversight Committee released a photograph showing Richard Branson, Jeffrey Epstein, and inventor Dean Kamen together.

New Hampshire Public Radio’s report on the photograph identifies Branson, Epstein, and Kamen in an outdoor setting that appears to be a beach.

Kamen later said the photograph was taken on Branson’s private island.

The exact date was not provided with the released image. The setting and known 2013 meetings make that year plausible, but the photograph should remain described as undated unless an original file, metadata, or contemporaneous record establishes the date.

The photograph establishes that all three men were physically together. It does not establish the purpose of the gathering or prove wrongdoing.

The Proposed Epstein Donation

Epstein or his representatives discussed making a charitable donation associated with the Necker Cup and Branson’s philanthropic work.

Emails show that Virgin Unite considered accepting approximately $50,000.

Virgin Unite conducted due diligence. That review identified Epstein’s 2008 conviction and the seriousness of the allegations against him.

Branson instructed his team not to accept Epstein’s money directly.

That decision is significant because it demonstrates that Branson’s organization was capable of discovering Epstein’s criminal background during the same period in which Branson and Epstein were meeting.

It also raises a timeline question: when did Branson learn the results of that due diligence relative to the September meeting, the Necker Cup, and the November lunch?

The WildAid Donation

Although Virgin Unite declined a direct donation, an Epstein controlled organization later donated $50,000 to WildAid, an independent conservation charity associated with causes supported by Branson.

According to reporting on the transaction, the donation came from Epstein’s Enhanced Education entity after communications involving Epstein’s assistant and Virgin Unite personnel.

WildAid was not controlled by Branson or Virgin Unite. The charity reportedly accepted the contribution independently and disclosed it in its annual reporting.

Virgin representatives have said:

  • Branson directed Virgin Unite to reject Epstein’s donation after due diligence.
  • WildAid independently decided which contributions to accept.
  • Branson did not direct WildAid to accept the money.
  • The contribution did not establish an ongoing philanthropic partnership between Branson and Epstein.

The record nevertheless shows that Epstein’s proposed charitable contribution was redirected rather than disappearing entirely.

Why the Donation Timeline Matters

The due diligence review potentially marks the point at which Branson’s organization obtained a more accurate understanding of Epstein’s conviction.

The key questions are:

  • When did Virgin Unite complete the review?
  • Was Branson personally informed of the findings?
  • Did the review occur before or after Epstein attended the Necker Cup?
  • Did it occur before or after Branson visited Little Saint James?
  • Why did any contact continue after the donation was rejected?
  • Why did the money reach WildAid through an Epstein controlled entity?

The available reporting indicates that Branson rejected the direct contribution after learning more about Epstein’s record. It does not completely resolve the sequence of every meeting and communication.

Later Email Appearances

Records reportedly contain occasional later emails involving Branson or Virgin charitable appeals through approximately 2018.

Virgin Group has said many later messages were broad charitable communications or mailing list appeals that inadvertently included Epstein.

A mass email does not establish a continuing personal relationship. The evidence should be separated into:

  • Direct personal communication.
  • Assistant to assistant scheduling.
  • Business or charitable correspondence.
  • Mass distribution messages.
  • Invitations that may not have been accepted.
  • Third party references to Branson.

The clearest direct Branson to Epstein exchange remains the September 2013 message.

EFTA01856496

Epstein Data document EFTA01856496 contains a September 5, 2011 communication involving Richard Branson and Jeffrey Epstein.

The visible index text includes:

“Dear Jeffrey. Richard Many thanks as always. Will pass this through to Rob Aquadro and Richard Morris…”

The document predates the better documented 2013 meetings. It indicates that Epstein related communications involving Branson or his organization existed by 2011.

The full chain, sender identities, attachments, and underlying subject should be reviewed before concluding that Branson personally wrote every line attributed to the correspondence.

EFTA02128207

Epstein Data document EFTA02128207 includes a September 2013 schedule notation stating:

“Richard Branson may join the dinner.”

A schedule entry establishes that attendance was contemplated. It does not prove Branson attended.

This record should therefore be classified as a proposed appearance unless corroborated by a guest list, transportation record, photograph, expense record, assistant confirmation, or participant testimony.

EFTA01899254 and EFTA01898987

Epstein Data document EFTA01899254 and EFTA01898987 contain an email from another person stating that he had also been invited to visit Richard Branson and asking Epstein how close Branson’s island was to Epstein’s island.

These records establish that third parties viewed Branson and Epstein as geographically accessible within the same Caribbean social environment.

They do not establish that Branson sent the invitation, that the visit occurred, or that Branson knew the writer was discussing him with Epstein.

EFTA02050286

Epstein Data document EFTA02050286 concerns “Richard Branson, Strive Challenge.”

The visible text includes doubt from a recipient about whether a communication represented as coming from Branson was authentic.

This is an important caution. Epstein’s archive contains:

  • Authentic direct emails.
  • Forwarded messages.
  • Drafts.
  • Assistant correspondence.
  • Marketing communications.
  • Messages written on behalf of public figures.
  • Communications whose authenticity was questioned by participants.

Not every document displaying Branson’s name was written or approved by Branson.

The Sarah Ransome Recording Allegation

In emails later unsealed in Giuffre v. Maxwell, survivor Sarah Ransome alleged that Epstein possessed sexual recordings involving several prominent men, including Richard Branson.

Ransome subsequently withdrew or disavowed the claim. She acknowledged that she had invented the existence of the recordings during a period when she was attempting to draw attention to Epstein’s crimes.

The Guardian’s account of the unsealed material noted that no proof of the recordings was produced and that the allegations had been retracted.

Branson and Virgin Group denied the allegation as baseless.

The recording claim must not be presented as established fact.

How the Ransome Allegation Should Be Reported

The responsible evidentiary formulation is:

Sarah Ransome alleged in emails that Epstein possessed a sexual recording involving Richard Branson. She later retracted the claim, and no recording or corroborating evidence has been produced.

It would be inaccurate to state:

Epstein possessed a sex tape of Richard Branson.

The absence of corroboration for this particular claim does not discredit Ransome’s documented status as an Epstein survivor. Survivors can provide accurate testimony about abuse while also making an unsupported or false claim about a separate matter.

Each assertion must be evaluated on its own evidence.

Branson’s Public Response

After the 2026 document release, Branson’s representatives said that any contact Richard and Joan Branson had with Epstein occurred on only a few occasions and was limited to group or business settings.

The statement said:

  • Branson believes Epstein’s conduct was abhorrent.
  • Branson supports justice for Epstein’s victims.
  • Epstein arrived at the Necker meeting with three adult women.
  • Epstein referred to those women as his “harem.”
  • Branson regrettably repeated that language.
  • Branson would not have used the term or associated with Epstein had he known the full facts.
  • Epstein presented his conviction as a consensual encounter with someone nearly eighteen.
  • Branson’s comments about rehabilitation were based on that minimized account.
  • Virgin Unite rejected a direct Epstein donation after conducting due diligence.

These are Branson and Virgin Group’s explanations. They should be included alongside the documents rather than substituted for them.

What Branson’s Response Does Not Resolve

The statement does not fully answer:

  • How Branson and Epstein were introduced.
  • Why Epstein was invited to Necker Island after his conviction.
  • Whether Branson or his team conducted due diligence before the first meeting.
  • When Branson learned the full results of Virgin Unite’s review.
  • Why Branson visited Little Saint James after the September email.
  • Whether the November lunch occurred before or after Branson rejected the donation.
  • Whether additional direct communications remain undisclosed.
  • What Epstein wanted Branson or Gates to say publicly.
  • Whether Branson discussed Epstein’s rehabilitation with anyone besides Epstein.

These questions do not establish criminal conduct. They are relevant to understanding how Epstein regained elite social legitimacy after 2008.

The Necker Island and Little Saint James Distinction

Necker Island and Little Saint James are different properties in different jurisdictions.

IslandOwner during the relevant periodJurisdictionRelevance
Necker IslandRichard BransonBritish Virgin IslandsSite of Branson’s home, business gatherings, the Necker Cup, and documented meetings with Epstein
Little Saint JamesJeffrey EpsteinUnited States Virgin IslandsEpstein residence and documented site of abuse allegations, transportation activity, meetings, and the November 2013 Branson lunch

Confusing the two islands can distort the record.

Evidence that Epstein visited Necker does not prove that criminal conduct occurred there. Evidence that Branson visited Little Saint James does not prove that he witnessed or participated in abuse.

The locations establish access and association. Criminal conclusions require additional evidence.

Was Branson Part of Epstein’s Trafficking Network?

No reliable evidence reviewed for this article establishes that Branson knowingly participated in Epstein’s trafficking operation.

No survivor has produced a substantiated allegation, supported by corroborating evidence, that Branson received her from Epstein.

The Ransome recording allegation was retracted and remains unsupported.

There is no identified criminal charge or civil judgment finding that Branson:

  • Sexually abused an Epstein survivor.
  • Paid Epstein for access to women.
  • Recruited women for Epstein.
  • Helped conceal trafficking.
  • Participated in a trafficking conspiracy.
  • Knew that the women accompanying Epstein were victims.

Branson’s documented conduct belongs in the categories of post-conviction association, elite access, reputational validation, and questionable judgment. The current evidence does not support labeling him a proven participant in trafficking.

Branson’s Role in Epstein’s Reputation Rehabilitation

Epstein’s post-conviction strategy relied on continued acceptance by respected people and institutions.

The value of access to Branson included:

  • A globally recognized entrepreneurial brand.
  • A reputation for philanthropy.
  • Access to Necker Island.
  • Invitations to elite charity and sporting events.
  • Connections to Bill Gates and other business leaders.
  • Potential charitable donations.
  • Photographs and social proof.
  • Public relations advice.

Branson’s September 2013 email is unusually important because it makes the reputational function explicit. Epstein asked for public relations thoughts, and Branson supplied a possible rehabilitation message.

Whether or not Branson followed through, the advice revealed how Epstein sought to recast a pattern of abuse as a single consensual mistake.

Key Findings

Richard Branson’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein was more substantial than a name appearing incidentally in a contact list.

The record documents direct correspondence, friendly invitations, multiple planned or completed meetings, Necker Island hospitality, a lunch on Little Saint James, charitable discussions, transportation arrangements, and a photograph of the two men together.

The strongest criticism concerns Branson’s public relations advice. By repeating Epstein’s version of the Palm Beach case as a single encounter with a nearly eighteen year old woman, Branson adopted the same minimization that Epstein used to rehabilitate himself.

Branson’s representatives say he did not know the full facts. The available evidence does not prove otherwise. It does show that accurate information about Epstein’s conviction was publicly available and was later discovered by Virgin Unite through ordinary due diligence.

The available record does not establish that Branson participated in Epstein’s trafficking operation. The retracted sexual recording allegation cannot responsibly be treated as proof.

Branson’s importance to the Epstein story lies elsewhere. His hospitality, name, island, philanthropy, and public relations instincts illustrate how Epstein regained access to elite circles after becoming a convicted sex offender. Epstein did not need every influential person to participate in his crimes. He needed enough of them to treat him as rehabilitated, welcome him into respectable settings, and repeat his preferred version of what he had done.
