Bill Gates: Sexual Misconduct Allegations, Workplace Findings, and the Epstein Record

Bill Gates has faced a documented workplace complaint about inappropriate communications and conduct toward a Microsoft employee, reporting that he pursued other women who worked at Microsoft and the Gates Foundation, and scrutiny of his extramarital affairs after his association with Jeffrey Epstein became public. These are different matters. An affair does not by itself establish harassment, and a relationship with Epstein does not by itself establish participation in Epstein’s sexual abuse.
The strongest primary records are Microsoft’s independent workplace review, Gates’s June 2026 congressional interview, and the Gates Foundation’s review of its Epstein contacts. They support a more precise account than headlines about affairs or photographs in the Epstein files. blogs.microsoft.com
Snapshot
| Subject | Documented status |
|---|---|
| Microsoft employee complaint | A woman reported inappropriate communications and conduct and referred to sexual harassment. An outside investigator confirmed the communications and meetings. Gates acknowledged the conduct but said it was consensual. |
| Other workplace approaches | Reporting described Gates asking a Microsoft employee and a Gates Foundation employee to dinner in circumstances the women found uncomfortable. No public finding that these specific approaches constituted unlawful harassment was identified. |
| Extramarital affairs | Gates acknowledged an affair with a Microsoft employee and later acknowledged other affairs. An affair alone is not an allegation of assault. |
| Epstein’s 2013 draft | Epstein wrote allegations about Gates’s sex life and supposed requests for medication. The document is Epstein’s draft, not a verified account from a survivor or proof that the alleged events occurred. |
| Gates’s sworn account | Gates acknowledged affairs with two adult Russian women, denied having a sexually transmitted infection or seeking medication to secretly give his wife, and denied sexual contact with anyone introduced by Epstein. |
| Epstein related sexual abuse allegation | The reviewed congressional and foundation records do not establish that a survivor accused Gates of sexually abusing them through Epstein. |
| Criminal status | The sources reviewed for this article identify no sexual assault or trafficking charge against Gates arising from the Epstein investigation. |
Key Takeaways
- Microsoft’s independent review confirms that a workplace complaint against Gates was investigated. It also records the complainant’s characterization of his behavior and Gates’s response.
- The reported invitations to other employees raise a distinct workplace power question. They should not be combined into an invented count of sexual assaults or treated as findings from Microsoft’s formal investigation.
- Gates has acknowledged infidelity. His 2026 congressional testimony gives unusually detailed answers about two affairs Epstein learned of.
- Epstein’s draft about an alleged infection and medication contains unverified claims. Gates denied the central claims under questioning.
- Gates met Epstein repeatedly after Epstein’s sex offense conviction. Gates has described that decision as a serious mistake. The foundation’s external review found no evidence that it participated in or knew of Epstein’s ongoing trafficking.
- A photograph, schedule entry, meeting, or plane journey is evidence of contact. It does not establish sexual misconduct.
Microsoft’s Investigation of a Workplace Complaint
On July 7, 2019, a Microsoft employee identified in an independent review as Person A reported that Gates had subjected her to inappropriate communications and conduct. In making the report, she referred to sexual harassment and the Me Too movement. She said she had first met Gates at Microsoft in 1999 and that they subsequently communicated and met intermittently while she worked there. blogs.microsoft.com
Microsoft retained outside attorney Ellen Dwyer to investigate. According to the 2022 independent transparency report commissioned by Microsoft, that investigation confirmed the communications and meetings. Microsoft president Brad Smith discussed the allegations with Gates. Gates acknowledged the reported communications and conduct but said they were consensual. The investigator briefed a board committee in November 2019. Gates left Microsoft’s board in March 2020. The public review protects Person A’s identity and does not disclose further details or announce a finding that Gates committed sexual assault. blogs.microsoft.com
Gates separately acknowledged through a representative that he had an affair with a Microsoft employee. Reporting connected the board investigation to that prior relationship. The public Microsoft review is the better source for the investigation’s exact findings: it confirms the conduct investigated and records that consent was disputed in characterization, while withholding private details. It does not authorize identifying Person A or filling the gaps with speculation. blogs.microsoft.com
Reported Approaches to Other Employees
Separate reporting in 2021 described Gates pursuing women who worked at Microsoft and the Gates Foundation. One account concerned a Microsoft employee who gave a presentation in 2006. Gates reportedly emailed her afterward to ask her to dinner and indicated she could disregard the invitation if it made her uncomfortable. Another account concerned a Gates Foundation employee whom he reportedly asked to dinner during a work trip to New York; she said the approach made her uncomfortable. The reports described professional settings in which Gates held exceptional power. The Irish Times
These accounts should be described as reported workplace approaches. They are not the same as Person A’s documented Microsoft complaint, and the public records reviewed here do not establish that each woman filed a formal harassment complaint or alleged physical assault. Treating the invitations as consensual romances would also disregard the reported discomfort. Both the conduct and its limits belong in the record.
Microsoft subsequently commissioned a broader examination of its handling of harassment and discrimination. That review considered the Gates investigation as well as company practices. It expressly said its assignment was to review the investigation’s results, not reinvestigate Gates. The company’s response and action plan and the independent report should be read together. Affairs Gates Has Acknowledged
Gates has acknowledged an affair with a Microsoft employee while he was married. In his June 10, 2026 interview with the House Oversight Committee, he also discussed two affairs with adult Russian women whose existence had become part of the Epstein documents. He described one as a bridge player and the other as a scientist. Asked their approximate ages at the time, he said one was in her twenties and one in her thirties. oversight.house.gov
Gates told the committee that the affairs had no connection to his interactions with Epstein, although Epstein later learned about sensitive information concerning his private life. Asked about other affairs, Gates did not provide a complete public inventory of his relationships. A claim that he admitted a particular total number of affairs should therefore be tied to a specific statement, not inferred from the testimony. Infidelity may be relevant to how Epstein sought influence over Gates, but it does not establish coercion, harassment, or assault against the women involved. oversight.house.gov
What Epstein’s 2013 Draft Actually Is
A July 18, 2013 email preserved as EFTA01966988 was sent by Epstein to his own address. It was written as though a departing Gates adviser were speaking. The draft alleged that the adviser had helped Gates with consequences of sexual encounters and with meetings involving women. It also carried an allegation about obtaining medication in connection with a supposed sexually transmitted infection.
The document establishes that Epstein wrote those allegations. It does not establish that the adviser authored them, that Gates received the draft, that an infection existed, or that medication was secretly given to anyone. The House committee entered the document into its interview record and questioned Gates about it. A separate June 2013 exchange preserved as EFTA00873874 concerns the adviser’s departure and Epstein’s involvement in that negotiation; it should not be mistaken for independent corroboration of every allegation in the later draft. oversight.house.gov
Gates said he had not seen the July draft before its release. He acknowledged that Epstein knew of affairs but said the draft mixed truthful private information with false claims. Under committee questioning, he denied ever having a sexually transmitted infection and denied asking the adviser to obtain antibiotics. He suggested Epstein could have believed an infection allegation would give him leverage. Those are Gates’s answers; the released draft and testimony do not independently resolve every detail of his private relationships. oversight.house.gov
Did Epstein Arrange Sexual Encounters for Gates?
Gates denied that he had sexual contact with anyone Epstein introduced to him or anyone affiliated with Epstein. He also denied that Epstein or an associate offered him a young woman or girl for sex, that he received a massage arranged by Epstein, and that he engaged in sexual activity in Epstein’s presence. Those answers appear in the House transcript. oversight.house.gov
Gates acknowledged encountering women he understood to be Epstein’s administrative staff. He told the committee that he was photographed with women at Epstein’s request and that two women were aboard a flight he took with Epstein. He said they appeared to be adults and denied observing sexual activity or abuse. Photographs with redacted faces and the presence of women on an aircraft cannot establish that those women were victims or that Gates assaulted them. His testimony is evidence of his account, not independent proof that every person present was safe. oversight.house.gov
Gates’s Documented Contact With Epstein
Epstein Data’s Gates index links underlying emails and schedules documenting meetings and correspondence from 2011 through 2014. The records include dinners at Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse, discussions about prospective charitable funding, a meeting in Paris, and a flight with Epstein to Palm Beach. Gates acknowledged the flight and Paris meeting in his congressional interview. He said he never visited Epstein’s island, New Mexico ranch, or Palm Beach home. The fact that he met Epstein after Epstein’s earlier sex offense conviction is established and relevant to assessing his judgment and Epstein’s access to influential people. epstein-data.com
Gates told lawmakers that he knew Epstein’s earlier conviction was sexual in nature but had not investigated its details at the time. He said the prospect of raising substantial money for global health drew him into the meetings and that the effort produced no such fund. He later called the association a grave error in judgment. His explanation and the schedules should both be preserved, since they answer different questions: why he says he met Epstein and how often the records show contact. oversight.house.gov
The Gates Foundation Review and Its Scope
In July 2026, the Gates Foundation released the result of an external review by WilmerHale. The foundation’s statement says the reviewers conducted more than 50 interviews and examined extensive records. They found no evidence that the foundation paid Epstein or participated in or knew of his ongoing trafficking or other criminal activity. The engagement primarily concerned a proposed charitable fund that was never created and an introduction to the International Peace Institute, which later received a foundation grant for polio work. gatesfoundation.org
That was a review of foundation engagement. It was not a criminal investigation of every aspect of Gates’s personal life. The foundation published an executive summary rather than the full underlying report, and the reported review did not include Gates’s personal communications. Its findings should be given their stated scope. gatesfoundation.org
What the Allegations Do and Do Not Show
The workplace record establishes an investigated complaint involving inappropriate communications and conduct, with Gates acknowledging the conduct and asserting consent. Reporting describes additional approaches to women who worked in organizations he led. His admitted affairs establish infidelity. Epstein’s draft establishes an apparent attempt to use information and allegations about that infidelity, while Gates disputes the draft’s claims about infection and medication.
The records reviewed here do not establish that Gates sexually assaulted an Epstein survivor, had sex with a minor supplied by Epstein, visited Little Saint James, or participated in Epstein’s trafficking. Gates denied those acts in his congressional interview. This distinction is necessary because photographs, contact lists, and allegations written by Epstein have circulated as though they were survivor testimony or judicial findings. They are not. oversight.house.gov
