Introduction
Charles A. Michael appears in the Epstein files as a lawyer involved in a dispute over Filthy Rich before its publication. A signed July 25, 2016 letter identifies his firm as counsel for Jeffrey Epstein. It requests advance manuscript review and warns of potential legal action against the publisher and authors.
The record also contains the publisher’s earlier responses, an unsigned August draft, and partially redacted email chains. Reading these sources together distinguishes the lawyers’ competing positions from established facts and court decisions.
Key Takeaways
- Steptoe’s official biography verifies the full professional name Charles A. Michael.
- Publisher’s counsel offered an interview and advance topics while declining to provide the manuscript.
- Michael’s July letter renewed the manuscript request and threatened legal remedies. It did not announce a filed case.
- The August draft and internal email chain do not establish delivery of a completed letter to Rayman.
- The book was published. The reviewed correspondence does not establish a retraction, court victory, or editing caused by the letters.
Professional Identity and the Book
Steptoe’s biography, accessed October 17, 2026, identifies Charles A. Michael as a New York partner and commercial litigator. The 2016 letters use Charles Michael and the firm name Steptoe & Johnson LLP. A contemporary email header on HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_031282 places the same name at the Steptoe email domain, connecting the correspondence to that professional identity.
Hachette’s book listing credits Filthy Rich to James Patterson and John Connolly, with Tim Malloy, and names Little, Brown and Company as publisher. It gives an on-sale date of October 10, 2016. The present listing includes updated edition material, so its current subtitle should not be mistaken for the title printed on every 2016 edition.
May 2016: The Publisher’s Position
In a May 2, 2016 letter to Martin G. Weinberg and Reid H. Weingarten, Rayman declined the request for an advance manuscript. He said the authors relied on credible sources and intended to publish a truthful, newsworthy book. He encouraged Epstein to give his account in an interview, offered advance areas of questioning, and set May 9 as the response deadline.
Weinberg replied on May 3, renewing the request as an opportunity to identify factual errors before publication. The letters also disputed whether an earlier December 2015 letter had been delivered. Weinberg said a messenger had delivered it; Rayman said Hachette had not received it. This exchange does not settle that dispute.
In his signed May 5 response, Rayman kept the interview invitation open through May 9 and maintained the refusal to provide a pre-publication manuscript. He cited journalistic and editorial practices. These are letters by Rayman and Weinberg, not by Michael.
July 25: Michael’s Signed Letter
Michael’s two-page July 25 letter expressly responds to Rayman’s May 5 letter. It rejects the interview proposal as unfair to Epstein and renews the request to review the manuscript. Michael argues that the authors were biased and that earlier coverage was unreliable. Those are his client’s advocacy positions, not findings about the authors or the book.
On page 2, EFTA00599651, Michael cites legal authorities and warns that available remedies would be pursued against Hachette and the authors. A handwritten signature appears above his typed name. The letter is marked “By E-Mail” and lists copied recipients. The preserved copy establishes its contents and signature, but does not itself provide a delivery receipt.
The warning is evidence of legal pressure before publication. It is not a defamation judgment or a ruling that the publisher had to surrender its manuscript.
August: An Unsigned Draft
EFTA00583735 is a three-page letter addressed to Rayman under Michael’s name. The date reads August with the day left blank. Page 3, EFTA00583737, has no signature above the typed name. It discusses an email in which Steven Hoffenberg claimed to be on the book’s writing team, questions his reliability, and again proposes manuscript review.
The draft’s references to Hoffenberg’s history and other lawsuits are arguments prepared for the publisher. The exhibits it cites are not included in this three-page PDF. They cannot be treated as independently checked findings merely because the draft describes them. Nor does Hoffenberg’s reported claim establish the nature of any contribution he actually made to the book.
This is an unsigned draft whose delivery is unverified. That is more precise than declaring that it was definitely never sent.
What the Internal Email Chain Shows
The House Oversight packet beginning at HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_019105 provides separate evidence of internal circulation. Page 2, HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_019106, shows a message from Darren Indyke to Michael dated August 15, 2016, followed by Michael’s August 16 reply. The substantive text is marked as privileged and redacted.
On August 17, Indyke forwarded the chain to Epstein. The attachment list on page 1 includes a Word document described as a draft letter to Rayman about the book and Hoffenberg, with August 16 in the filename. This establishes an internally forwarded draft attachment. The filename alone does not prove that the attachment exactly matches EFTA00583735, or that a completed letter reached Rayman. The redacted advice should not be guessed.
Publication and Later Coverage
The publisher’s catalog records an October 10, 2016 on-sale date. Publication shows that the book proceeded; it does not reveal which edits, if any, resulted from legal correspondence.
French book-industry outlet ActuaLitté covered the May and July exchange on February 17, 2026, identifying Michael and linking the released letters. That reporting provides later context. The letters themselves remain the primary evidence for his words and actions.

Limitations and Open Questions
This review covers the cited public records through October 17, 2026. They do not establish a filed action or court order arising from these letters, the outcome of every possible dispute, or the publisher’s response to the unsigned August draft. No complete docket-wide search is claimed.
The sources also do not establish Michael’s full history of work for Epstein, fees, personal relationship, or knowledge beyond the documented professional acts. His legal representation does not establish participation in Epstein’s criminal conduct. The record supports an account of a publishing dispute without treating advocacy statements as proven facts.
Conclusion
Michael’s documented role was to advance Epstein’s position in a pre-publication dispute. The signed July letter, unsigned August draft, publisher responses, and internal correspondence each provide different evidence. Together they show the demand for manuscript access and the limits of what can be said about delivery, editorial changes, or legal results.
