James D. Watson and Jeffrey Epstein: Meetings, Photographs, and the Scientific Network

Released Epstein records document repeated contact with Watson after Jeffrey Epstein’s 2008 conviction. They include a confirmed lunch at Epstein’s Manhattan home, accepted dinner invitations, plans for breakfasts and other visits, photographs, correspondence between their offices, and discussions about featuring Watson in a film about Epstein.
The evidence establishes an ongoing relationship. It does not establish that Watson participated in Epstein’s sexual abuse or trafficking.

Watson’s Career and Public Standing
Watson was born in Chicago in 1928 and received his doctorate from Indiana University. His work with Francis Crick on DNA’s structure relied in part on research by Rosalind Franklin, Raymond Gosling, Maurice Wilkins, and their colleagues. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins received the Nobel Prize in 1962. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s account explicitly recognizes Franklin’s contribution. www.nobelprize.org
Watson became director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 1968. He later served as president and chancellor. His scientific reputation, institutional connections, and Nobel Prize made an introduction to him valuable within Epstein’s network of researchers, donors, and public figures.
Watson also made repeated claims about race and intelligence that drew widespread condemnation. In its January 2019 statement, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory called his statements reprehensible and unsupported by science and revoked his remaining honorary titles. This history matters to the Epstein record because Epstein referred to Watson while advancing similar claims.
Early Invitations and Social Access
The reviewed records show Epstein using Watson’s name to attract other guests before the particularly detailed 2017 correspondence began.
In a November 2015 exchange, Epstein proposed dinner with Watson while corresponding with Soon Yi Previn. The message shows an invitation and Epstein’s presentation of Watson as a notable guest. It does not, on its own, confirm the dinner took place.
Epstein’s schedules also placed Watson among guests at later gatherings. A January 2016 schedule lists a dinner involving Woody Allen, Soon Yi Previn, Tom Pritzker, and Jim Watson. A schedule is evidence of an intended gathering. Without a subsequent confirmation, it should not be treated as a complete attendance record.
The Confirmed January 2017 Lunch
The strongest evidence of a completed visit comes from EFTA02202943. On January 5, 2017, Watson’s executive assistant, Maureen Berejka, wrote that Watson had lunch with Epstein at his home the previous day. That places the lunch on January 4.
Berejka said Epstein had invited Watson and his wife, Elizabeth, back for dinner. In EFTA02201825, she accepted a specific invitation for January 20 at 7 p.m. The exchange gave the address as 9 East 71st Street and provided arrival instructions.
This sequence establishes a completed January 4 lunch and an accepted January 20 dinner invitation. It does not independently establish that the January 20 dinner occurred.
Repeated Contact During 2017
The January lunch was followed by regular scheduling between Watson’s office and Epstein’s assistants.
- EFTA02338506 records a reminder for a January 25 telephone call with Watson.
- EFTA00444128 reports that Watson sent papers to Epstein in February. The record establishes delivery of papers, but the description alone does not establish their subject or any scientific collaboration.
- EFTA00445970 records Watson’s request for a February 24 meeting. EFTA00446019 says he would be delighted to join Epstein and Ronald Lauder at Epstein’s home.
- EFTA00445522 says Epstein and Watson had discussed getting together with Bard College president Leon Botstein at Watson’s home. That message describes a discussion and a proposed gathering, not proof that the gathering occurred.
- EFTA02328691 describes a March 17 breakfast with Watson as confirmed on Epstein’s schedule. A confirmed appointment is stronger than an invitation, although it still does not document the conversation itself.
- EFTA02217156 shows the offices staying in contact during July while the Watsons were traveling.
- EFTA02220631 records Epstein’s office asking about another Watson visit in August.
- EFTA00457615 shows Epstein’s assistant asking whether Watson could autograph a book with an inscription referring to meeting someone at Epstein’s home. The request does not prove Watson wrote the inscription.
These records document persistent access and coordination. They also show why the exact wording matters: some messages confirm previous contact, while others only propose future contact.
Palm Beach and Manhattan Plans in 2018
Watson’s name also appears in plans involving Epstein’s Palm Beach residence. In EFTA02235934, the assistants discussed the location of a February 2018 visit and identified Epstein’s home on El Brillo Way. In EFTA02238172, they discussed breakfast arrangements. These messages establish detailed plans. They do not, without a confirming record, establish that Watson arrived.
The offices resumed scheduling in May. EFTA02244574 asks whether Watson could see Epstein in New York that week. In EFTA02245645, Berejka proposed a Wednesday dinner, and Epstein’s office agreed to 7 p.m. at 9 East 71st Street. EFTA02246270 contains a calendar alert for dinner with Watson on May 9. Together, those records strongly document a scheduled dinner. They do not disclose what was discussed or independently prove every listed attendee arrived.
Photographs in the Released Files
Images identified as depicting Watson include EFTA01599562, EFTA01599573, and EFTA01599574. Reporting on photographs from the Epstein files describes Watson posing with three women in Epstein’s New York home. The date of those images was not established in that reporting. www.aa.com.tr
The images support Watson’s presence in Epstein’s social setting. They do not establish the women’s identities or ages, the circumstances of the photographs, or criminal conduct by anyone pictured. The women should not be identified as survivors based solely on their appearance in these images.
Epstein Cited Watson in a Discussion of Race and Genetics
In EFTA00834837, Epstein wrote to Noam Chomsky about race, test scores, and genetics, then invoked Watson’s experience after Watson’s views became public. Epstein presented Watson as a person unfairly excluded for expressing what Epstein regarded as uncomfortable ideas.
The record establishes Epstein’s use of Watson’s name and his sympathy toward those views. It does not show Watson participating in that email exchange. Nor does it turn Epstein’s assertions about genetics into scientific findings. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s 2019 statement expressly rejected Watson’s claims as unsupported by science.
In EFTA02541014, Watson also appears among scientists and other influential people in a list Epstein sent to himself in January 2018. This is evidence that Epstein regarded Watson as part of his network. A name on Epstein’s list does not show that every person knew about the list, shared its purpose, or participated in every project Epstein contemplated. lastpagefirst.substack.com
The Proposed Film
Messages from 2018 and 2019 show Epstein and others discussing a film involving prominent people in his orbit. Watson was named as a possible participant. EFTA01055578 records his name in a discussion involving writer Michael Wolff. EFTA01615487 is among the records concerning the later film discussions with Steve Bannon.
In EFTA00507488, Epstein recounted receiving a call from Watson around Watson’s ninety first birthday and discussed whether Watson was well enough to be filmed. This is Epstein’s account of a call. The reviewed record does not establish that an interview with Watson was completed or included in any finished production.
On July 6, 2019, Epstein and Bannon discussed going to Watson’s home in Cold Spring Harbor. A later message said the plans were canceled. Epstein was arrested that day. The messages support a proposed visit that did not take place, rather than a final meeting with Watson. bylinetimes.com
Did Epstein Fund Watson?
The meetings, messages, photographs, and invitations establish a relationship. They do not establish a verified payment from Epstein to Watson or Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
A claim about funding requires evidence of a transfer, such as a grant agreement, bank record, institutional ledger, tax filing, or recipient acknowledgment. An Epstein list or statement about scientists he supported is not sufficient on its own. Watson’s archival collection includes correspondence, financial records, and institutional materials that may be relevant to further research. The existence of those archival records is not proof that they contain an Epstein payment. www.cshl.edu

What the Evidence Establishes
Watson maintained contact with Epstein after Epstein’s conviction. His assistant confirmed a completed lunch at Epstein’s home. The offices arranged additional calls, meals, and visits in New York and Palm Beach. Epstein used Watson’s reputation when inviting others to gatherings and included him in discussions about a proposed film.
The records do not establish that Watson participated in Epstein’s crimes, received a verified payment from Epstein, knew the full extent of Epstein’s abuse, appeared in a completed film, or attended every proposed event. The distinction between an invitation, a confirmed appointment, and a completed meeting is essential throughout this record.
