Maria Drokova
Maria Aleksandrovna Drokova, now known as Masha Bucher, is a Russian born venture capitalist and former pro Kremlin youth movement spokesperson who became a public relations adviser, network builder, and close correspondent for Jeffrey Epstein from 2017 until shortly before his July 2019 arrest. Released records show that she proposed reputation repair campaigns, arranged press interviews, introduced scientists and technology founders, discussed potential assistants, sought Epstein’s advice for her venture fund, received gifts and expense support, and maintained an admiring personal relationship with him years after his 2008 conviction.

Early Life and Nashi
Drokova was born in Tambov in 1989. As a teenager she joined Nashi, a Kremlin supported youth movement created during Vladimir Putin’s presidency. She rose rapidly, leading its Moscow headquarters and serving as a federal spokesperson and commissioner. In 2008 she received a state medal for public and information activity. A widely circulated image of her kissing Putin helped make her a recognizable symbol of the movement.
The documentary Putin’s Kiss followed Drokova as she became increasingly conflicted about Nashi and the Russian political system. The film placed particular attention on the brutal 2010 attack on journalist Oleg Kashin, whom she knew. Drokova later left the movement, moved toward the technology industry, and publicly disavowed Putin and her earlier political role.
This history is relevant because later reporting examined whether her technology network, Russian business relationships, and contact with Epstein created intelligence or technology transfer risks. It does not prove that she acted for the Russian government. No located public criminal charge identifies her as a Russian intelligence agent.
Public Relations and Venture Capital Career
After leaving Russian political activism, Drokova worked in communications for Runa Capital and Acronis, organizations associated with technology entrepreneur Serguei Beloussov, now known as Serg Bell. She later became an angel investor and moved to the United States.
In 2017 she was developing her own venture fund while consulting in public relations. In January 2018 she launched Day One Ventures in San Francisco. The firm combined early stage investment with hands on communications support for portfolio companies. Reuters reported that the initial fund was nearly $50 million and would make investments ranging from $100,000 to $1 million. Forbes named her to its 2019 30 Under 30 venture capital list.
Day One Ventures later reported investments in prominent technology companies and announced a $150 million third fund in 2024. The firm’s own website describes Drokova, now Bucher, as founder and general partner and emphasizes the same media access and storytelling abilities visible in her work for Epstein.
The Epstein files show that her fund and her relationship with Epstein developed at the same time. She sought his advice about raising and closing the fund, asked for introductions to potential investors, and later told him that she would not have created the fund without the ideas and knowledge he shared.
Introduction to Jeffrey Epstein
The earliest located introduction chain dates to March 2017. An intermediary described Drokova to Epstein as an exceptional and successful young woman who wanted to meet him, understand what he wanted, and help find him a “young attractive assistant.” Epstein’s reply specified an age range of twenty to twenty four.

By May 18, 2017, Epstein’s staff had scheduled a New York appointment with Drokova and identified Yury Molodtsov as her assistant. June emails show her discussing a plant neurobiology collaboration and trying to schedule calls around international travel. The pattern quickly shifted from introduction to active collaboration.
The assistant language deserves careful treatment. The files establish that the introduction linked Drokova to a request for a young and attractive assistant and that she later proposed women to Epstein. They do not establish that the role was sexual, that a particular candidate accepted, or that a candidate was harmed.
Reputation Management for Epstein
Drokova’s most consequential documented role was public image rehabilitation.
In July 2017 she sent Epstein a list of ideas for reshaping his public identity. The proposals included producing a movie about his life, creating an award carrying his name, building a foundation to address harassment of women, and increasing press attention around his scientific interests and philanthropy. The proposal appears in EFTA02644814 and EFTA01041085.
The timing matters. Epstein had been a registered sex offender for years. His 2008 Florida plea and unusually favorable non prosecution agreement were publicly reported. A campaign portraying him as a visionary scientist, philanthropist, and advocate for women would have displaced scrutiny rather than answered it.
September 2017 emails show Drokova encouraging Epstein to speak with reporters after an article was restored online. When Epstein wrote that his voice should not be direct “for awhile,” she replied that she had three more interview requests and asked whether he could take calls. Another July thread says that she had new ideas and relevant media connections they could use for him. It appears in EFTA02397023 and EFTA02397018.
Reporting later identified Drokova contacting Science journalist Jeffrey Mervis while presenting herself as Epstein’s publicist. She also coordinated possible interviews or meetings with reporters from Forbes, Business Insider, Futurism, Nature, and other publications. In a later interview with journalist Seth Hettena, she characterized the work as a brief favor for which she was not paid. The released correspondence shows activity extending far beyond a single introduction.

An interview or meeting does not establish that a journalist knowingly participated in reputation laundering. The evidence concerns Drokova’s outreach strategy and Epstein’s access, not wrongdoing by reporters.
Scientist, Founder, and Investor Introductions
Drokova also connected Epstein to people in science and technology. This activity overlapped with her venture work and Epstein’s long campaign to associate himself with researchers and innovation.
She helped arrange a video call with longevity entrepreneur Bryan Johnson in October 2017. Staff records show Drokova joining Epstein and Johnson. Johnson later said he ended the contact quickly because Epstein felt deeply troubling to him.
She introduced Epstein to Serguei Beloussov, her former employer and an investor associated with Runa Capital, Acronis, and quantum technology initiatives. In the introduction she praised both men and emphasized their shared interest in quantum technology. Beloussov later told The Washington Post that he spoke with Epstein only once, did not do business with him, and advised Harvard not to accept his money.
Other records show Drokova arranging or proposing contact with Francis Pedraza of Invisible Technologies, Daniel and other founders, investor or scientist Neil, longevity investor James Peyer, an unnamed stem cell scientist, and an artificial intelligence executive in Paris. The files also connect her public relations work to Harvard scientist Martin Nowak, whom Epstein had funded. Reporting says she tried to arrange scientist interviews about Epstein and later told him she had a strong conversation with Nowak.

Assistant Recruitment and Candidate Discussions
The March 2017 introduction explicitly connected Drokova with a search for a young, attractive assistant. The intermediary wrote that Drokova needed to know Epstein and the type of assistant he wanted. Epstein answered with an age range.
The Washington Post later reported that released emails show Drokova putting forward multiple women who might serve as assistants. Other correspondence includes requests to build lists of candidates and a December 2018 reference from Epstein to a “ten woman swat team” and a list of candidates. The context of that phrase is not sufficiently complete to establish a recruitment program for abuse.
This evidence is important because Epstein had a documented history of using employment, education, modeling, and assistant opportunities to obtain access to young women. That history increases the public interest in any recruitment request. It does not permit an automatic conclusion that Drokova knew the criminal purpose of earlier or later recruitment.
The files reviewed for this article do not identify a Drokova referred candidate as an Epstein victim. No survivor statement located for this article accuses Drokova of recruitment for sexual abuse.

Day One Ventures and Epstein’s Influence
Drokova was raising and structuring Day One Ventures while the Epstein relationship developed. Their messages discuss the qualities of investors, closing a fund, finding appropriate backers, and possible introductions to wealthy Russians. In one exchange she asked what the main quality of an investor should be. Epstein replied that the investor type was not primarily interested in money.
She forwarded coverage of Day One’s launch to Epstein with the subject “New American dream.” Copies appear in EFTA02534854, EFTA02535381, EFTA00903219, EFTA00903210, and EFTA00903436.
In a 2018 message she told Epstein that she trusted him, praised his intellect, humor, kindness, and care for friends, and called him one of the brightest modern philosophers and thinkers. That message appears in EFTA00905928 and EFTA02536573.
In 2019 she credited Epstein with influencing the creation of her fund. Reporting has not established that Epstein invested in Day One Ventures. The San Francisco Standard reported no indication that he was an investor. Advice, introductions, gifts, and expenses nevertheless represent meaningful support even without an equity investment.
Russia, Sanctions, and Technology Questions
In December 2017, Drokova asked Epstein whether his connections could clarify expected United States sanctions affecting technology companies with research and development operations in Russia. She wrote that friends and partners held large stakes in affected companies and that she was trying to help them.
She also asked Epstein for introductions to suitable Russian oligarchs as potential investors. Separate reporting about Day One pitch materials, Russian capital, and her former employer Serguei Beloussov has generated scrutiny over possible technology transfer risks.
The Washington Post reported that United States and Swiss officials had examined concerns surrounding Beloussov and technology acquisition. A released FBI memo also contained a source claim concerning Day One Ventures and technology theft. A confidential source claim is intelligence information, not a proven fact. No public criminal charge located for this article accuses Drokova or Day One Ventures of espionage, sanctions evasion, or illegal technology transfer.
Drokova has denied acting for Moscow, said she distanced herself from Putin’s government, and stated that she renounced Russian citizenship. Beloussov has also denied Kremlin ties and said his contact with Epstein was limited.
The evidence supports scrutiny of the network. It does not support labeling Drokova an intelligence operative as a settled fact.
WE Talks and the Drokova Family Connection
WE Talks was a women’s networking and entrepreneurship project associated with Epstein assistant Svetlana “Lana” Pozhidaeva. Investigative reporting found that WE TALKS ENTERPRISES LLC was registered in 2018 by Epstein attorney Darren Indyke, shared an address with an Epstein foundation, and received operational support from Epstein’s network.
Maria Drokova’s sister Viktoria Drokova later served as a cofounder of WE Talks and helped run its Russian operation. Maria Drokova’s own documented role in the entity is less clear. Some secondary biographies describe her as involved in an earlier webinar series, while stronger reporting identifies Viktoria, not Maria, as the operator of the Epstein linked organization.
This project should not be confused with the World Bank hosted Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative, also known as We Fi, whose website separately uses the phrase “WE Talks” for public programming. Similar branding is not evidence that the World Bank initiative was connected to Epstein’s company.
The family and professional overlap is relevant because Drokova proposed a women focused foundation to Epstein in 2017, while an Epstein supported women’s organization emerged the following year. The available evidence does not establish that Maria controlled WE TALKS ENTERPRISES LLC.
Personal Relationship and Continued Contact
The released record became increasingly personal. Drokova praised Epstein warmly, sought his approval and advice, sent photographs, shared travel updates, and tried to meet him in New York, Florida, Boston, Paris, and other locations. Epstein and Drokova used email and Skype, including voice calls lasting more than an hour.
Their communication continued throughout 2018 and 2019. An August 2018 thread arranged a visit to Epstein’s Palm Beach house. December 2018 messages concern another meeting and candidate discussions. Early 2019 Skype records show calls, greetings, shared images, and repeated efforts to coordinate meetings.
On June 23, 2019, Drokova asked when Epstein was available and said she would be happy to see him. On June 25 she shared photographs from Paris. Reporting based on the released chat says Epstein then asked for intimate photographs and she responded playfully about the future. The exchange shows that their contact continued until days before his arrest. It does not establish that any intimate photograph was sent.
Epstein was arrested on federal sex trafficking charges on July 6, 2019.
Public Statements and 2026 Apology
Before the broader 2026 release, Drokova described her work for Epstein as a short term, unpaid public relations favor. The document record is inconsistent with the word “short.” It shows repeated work, meetings, introductions, direct messages, and personal contact from spring 2017 through June 2019.
In February 2026, now using the name Masha Bucher, she issued a public apology. She said she connected with Epstein while seeking protection from threats and scrutiny from the Russian government. She wrote that he made her feel that his power and connections could protect her. She said she was naive, did not investigate deeply enough, and believed Epstein’s claim that his 2008 case arose because a girl had lied about her age.
She apologized to Day One founders, employees, and investors for the pain caused. She said she introduced Epstein to four journalists, was not paid for her work, and never visited his Caribbean island. Reporting noted that her statement did not address every gift or expense documented in the files.
Her explanation provides important context about vulnerability, manipulation, and her understanding at the time. It does not erase the public availability of Epstein’s conviction or the sustained work she performed for him. Both realities can be true: Epstein could manipulate and exploit people around him, and a person he manipulated could still provide services that benefited his reputation and access.
Professional Fallout
The January 2026 document release caused immediate scrutiny of Drokova and Day One Ventures. The San Francisco Standard reported that some portfolio founders and former employees had not known the extent of her relationship with Epstein. At least one founder publicly said he cut ties with Bucher and Day One.
Reporting also observed changes to the Day One website and questioned whether the disclosures would affect the firm’s ability to invest remaining capital. Those are reported business consequences, not regulatory findings.
Day One Ventures remained active, and its website continued to identify Bucher as founder and general partner. No located public source shows that a regulator revoked the firm’s authority, charged it with wrongdoing, or found that Epstein financed it.

The public release contains more than 1,600 page level or message level mentions according to multiple news organizations. The volume is inflated by repeated quoted chains, duplicate productions, Skype export pages, contact metadata, and multiple copies of the same underlying event. The index below covers the distinct substantive clusters and all unique identifiers surfaced by the reviewed name searches, plus key variant and topic searches.
This is a cluster level index of the searched release, not a claim that every page containing a repeated name has independent evidentiary value. Newly restored files, OCR corrections, or additional government releases may add records.

Legal and Regulatory Status
No located indictment, criminal complaint, civil survivor complaint, regulatory order, or sanctions designation accuses Drokova of participating in Epstein’s sexual abuse or trafficking. No located public record establishes that she laundered money, violated sanctions, stole technology, or acted as an intelligence agent.
She has faced investigative reporting, public criticism, business consequences, and questions concerning her disclosures to portfolio companies. Those are matters of accountability and reputation, not criminal adjudications.
The distinction is essential. The records support describing her as an Epstein public relations adviser and network intermediary. They do not support describing her as a convicted participant, charged co conspirator, or proven intelligence operative.
What the Evidence Establishes
The evidence establishes that Drokova knowingly worked with Epstein after his sex offense conviction was public. She developed favorable media strategies, coordinated journalists and scientists, introduced technology figures, discussed potential assistants, and remained in regular contact for more than two years.
It establishes that she received gifts and logistical or financial support, even though no regular salary is documented. It also establishes that she sought Epstein’s advice for Day One Ventures and later credited him with influencing the fund.
It establishes that her earlier descriptions of the relationship as brief do not match the duration and intensity of the released correspondence.
What the Evidence Does Not Establish
The evidence does not establish that Drokova participated in sexual abuse, trafficking, or recruitment for abuse. It does not establish that she knew the full scope of Epstein’s crimes or witnessed criminal conduct.
It does not establish that Epstein invested in Day One Ventures. It does not establish that Drokova received the proposed $25,000 payment or cashed the $7,027.48 reimbursement check.
It does not establish that every person she introduced met Epstein, accepted money, knew his history, or helped rehabilitate him intentionally.
It does not establish Russian intelligence direction. Investigative concerns, geopolitical connections, and confidential source statements require corroboration before they can support that conclusion.
Why Maria Drokova Matters
Drokova’s record shows how Epstein converted one relationship into many. Her value was not limited to personal companionship. She offered specialized skills in public relations, storytelling, journalist access, investor networks, and technology introductions.
Her proposals reveal an attempted moral inversion. A man convicted in a case involving a minor could be repackaged as a defender of women, a patron of science, a prize giver, and a misunderstood thinker. That is reputation laundering in operational form.
The assistant search is equally important. Epstein’s history makes any request for young women worthy of scrutiny, especially when appearance and age were specified. The evidence must be followed without claiming more than it proves.
The relationship also demonstrates why survivor centered reporting must examine facilitators without flattening every facilitator into the same category. Drokova may have been manipulated by Epstein and may have believed false explanations. Her vulnerability does not make the services she provided irrelevant. Her services do not prove that she knew about or joined his abuse.

- What did Drokova know about Epstein’s 2008 conviction, non prosecution agreement, and public allegations before she proposed a reputation campaign?
- Which assistant candidates did she identify, and did any work for Epstein?
- Did Drokova receive any direct or indirect compensation beyond gifts, travel, hotel expenses, salon services, and advice?
- What was the purpose and intended recipient structure of the reported $25,000 payment instruction?
- Which interviews resulted in published coverage, and what disclosures did journalists receive about Drokova’s relationship with Epstein?
- How many founders, scientists, and investors did Drokova introduce to Epstein, and how many meetings occurred?
- Did Epstein or an Epstein controlled entity ever commit capital to Day One Ventures through a nominee, intermediary, or side arrangement?
- What role, if any, did Maria Drokova play in WE TALKS ENTERPRISES LLC, as distinct from her sister Viktoria’s documented role?
- Did Drokova disclose the Epstein relationship and support to Day One investors, employees, or portfolio companies before 2026?
- Did federal investigators interview her or seek her communications after Epstein’s 2019 arrest?
