Peter Thiel and Jeffrey Epstein: Meetings, Money, Political Access, and the Silicon Valley Connection

Jeffrey Epstein did not merely collect famous names. He cultivated people who controlled money, technology, political access, scientific institutions, and private intelligence networks. Peter Thiel occupied several of those worlds at once.
Thiel cofounded PayPal and Palantir Technologies. He became Facebook’s first outside investor, helped establish Founders Fund and Valar Ventures, supported Donald Trump, and financed a generation of political and technology figures. Epstein pursued him through meetings, introductions, private dinners, investment opportunities, political discussions, and invitations to the Caribbean.
The available record establishes a relationship that continued for years after Epstein became a registered sex offender. It includes direct correspondence, scheduled and completed meetings, an Epstein investment of approximately $40 million in Valar Ventures funds, political discussions, attempted introductions, and invitations connected to Epstein’s Caribbean properties.
However, the record has important limits. No known Epstein survivor has publicly accused Thiel of participating in sexual abuse or trafficking. No verified evidence reviewed for this article establishes that Thiel visited Little Saint James. A Thiel representative has said that he never went to Epstein’s island.
The central question is therefore not whether Thiel has been accused of Epstein’s crimes. He has not. The question is why one of Silicon Valley’s most connected investors maintained contact with Epstein, accepted Epstein’s capital through a Thiel cofounded investment firm, and continued communicating with him despite knowing about the scandal surrounding him.

Who Is Peter Thiel?
Peter Thiel is a German born American and New Zealand technology investor. He cofounded PayPal and became the company’s chief executive. After PayPal was sold to eBay, Thiel used his wealth and connections to build an influential network across technology, venture capital, national security, and politics.
Thiel became Facebook’s first outside investor in 2004. He later cofounded Palantir Technologies, a data analysis company that has received contracts from the United States military, intelligence agencies, immigration authorities, police departments, and foreign governments.
Thiel also helped establish Founders Fund and cofounded Valar Ventures. These firms gave him access to technology companies, founders, financial institutions, and government officials around the world.
His political influence expanded after he publicly supported Donald Trump in 2016. Thiel later became an important financial supporter and mentor to political figures associated with the American right, including JD Vance.
That combination made Thiel exceptionally valuable to Epstein. Thiel could provide access to Silicon Valley, venture capital, government technology, political campaigns, national security circles, and wealthy international investors.
Why the Epstein Connection Matters
Epstein’s contact with Thiel occurred after Epstein’s criminal conduct was public.
In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida to charges involving solicitation of prostitution, including solicitation involving a minor. He served a controversial jail sentence, received extensive work release privileges, and was required to register as a sex offender.
The meetings, emails, and financial arrangements involving Thiel occurred years later.
This timing is essential. Thiel was not dealing with an unknown financier whose crimes emerged only after his death. Epstein’s conviction, sex offender status, and treatment of underage girls were already matters of public record.
The documents also show that Epstein understood the reputational problem. In one 2015 exchange, Epstein reportedly asked Thiel whether his “bad press” gave him pause.
According to reporting based on the released correspondence, Thiel replied that if he were intimidated by bad press, he would not have gotten anywhere in life. He added that he hoped Epstein was holding up well and that the press cycle would not continue much further. The exchange was reported by Bloomberg Law after the release of additional Department of Justice records.
The exchange does not show Thiel endorsing Epstein’s crimes. It does show that Epstein’s scandal was directly acknowledged within their correspondence and did not immediately terminate the relationship.
The Earliest Documented Contact
The presently available record places direct scheduling between Epstein and Thiel in 2014.
An April 2014 email chain shows Thiel and Epstein attempting to arrange time together in New York. The surviving record is available as EFTA01927497.
The exchange is important because it establishes direct communication. This was not merely Epstein mentioning Thiel to a third party.
Later documents show Epstein repeatedly placing Thiel inside carefully assembled groups of financiers, diplomats, academics, politicians, and technology executives. Epstein appears to have viewed private gatherings as a method for making himself useful to Thiel.
A message from Epstein after a 2014 interaction stated, “that was fun,” followed by a plan to see Thiel again in approximately three weeks. The Associated Press cited that exchange in its analysis of Epstein’s continued network among wealthy and powerful people.
The wording strongly indicates that at least one planned encounter occurred. It also suggests the parties expected further contact rather than treating the meeting as a single introduction.
Epstein’s 2014 New York Calendar
Reporting on Epstein’s private calendars identified several proposed meetings with Thiel during September 2014.
According to Forbes, Epstein’s assistant placed multiple Thiel meetings on Epstein’s schedule. The entries included private meetings and meals.
Some calendar entries were tentative. Therefore, a scheduled meeting should not automatically be described as a completed meeting. However, the later “that was fun” message provides separate evidence that at least one personal encounter did take place.
One internal scheduling record listed Thiel among the people Epstein intended to see during a week that also included former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, diplomat Terje Rød Larsen, former White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler, and other influential figures. The scheduling document can be reviewed as EFTA00362483.
This pattern illustrates Epstein’s operating method. He assembled people from different sectors, then positioned himself as the person capable of bringing them together.
Epstein Introduces Peter Thiel to William Burns
One of the most consequential documented episodes involved William Burns, then a senior American diplomat and later director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Epstein wrote to Thiel describing Burns as one of the most respected diplomats in the Obama administration. Epstein referenced Burns’s role in secret negotiations with Iran and offered to arrange a meeting.
The introduction appears in EFTA02587069 and a related copy, EFTA02370150.
Thiel subsequently emailed Burns directly while copying Epstein. That communication appears in EFTA02339235.
These records establish three distinct facts:
- Epstein had direct access to both Thiel and Burns.
- Epstein offered to connect them.
- The proposed introduction resulted in direct communication with Epstein remaining inside the exchange.
The records do not establish an illicit purpose. They do establish that Epstein was functioning as an intermediary between a major technology investor and one of America’s most senior diplomats.
Ehud Barak and the Israeli Technology Network
Epstein also sought to connect Thiel with former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak.
The available records place Thiel, Barak, and Epstein within the same network of meetings, technology discussions, and investment opportunities. Epstein was closely connected to Barak and helped facilitate introductions involving political leaders, investors, and technology companies.
One significant example concerned Reporty, later renamed Carbyne. The company developed emergency response and communications technology. Barak invested in the company through a financial structure that also involved Epstein.
Emails show that the company was presented to Valar Ventures. In one exchange, Valar representative Andrew McCormack said he would like to learn more about Carbyne but considered the company too early for an immediate investment. That correspondence appears in EFTA02656963.
Founders Fund later participated in Carbyne’s 2018 financing round.
The sequence is notable, but it must be described carefully. The documents do not establish that Thiel personally ordered the Founders Fund investment. They also do not show that Valar’s initial discussion produced an investment. They show that Epstein’s network brought a company connected to Barak and Epstein into contact with investment firms associated with Thiel.
This is a documented network connection, not proof of a secret Palantir, Carbyne, or intelligence partnership.
The $40 Million Valar Ventures Investment
The financial connection between Epstein and Thiel’s business world was substantially larger than an occasional dinner.
According to a confidential Epstein estate report obtained by The New York Times and summarized by Gizmodo, Epstein invested approximately $40 million in two funds managed by Valar Ventures.
The investments were reportedly made in 2015 and 2016. Valar had been cofounded by Thiel, Andrew McCormack, and James Fitzgerald.
Later estate records reportedly valued the holdings at approximately $170 million, making the Valar position one of the largest assets remaining in Epstein’s estate.
The corporate distinction is important. Epstein did not simply give $40 million directly to Thiel. He reportedly became a limited partner in Valar managed funds. Limited partners provide capital to an investment fund, while the fund’s managers select and oversee investments.
A Thiel spokesperson disputed characterizations suggesting Epstein and Thiel jointly owned a venture fund. The response acknowledged Epstein’s status as a limited partner while rejecting the stronger claim of shared ownership.
The most accurate description is therefore:
- Epstein invested approximately $40 million in two Valar Ventures funds.
- Thiel was a cofounder of Valar Ventures.
- Epstein held a limited partner interest.
- The available evidence does not establish that Epstein was a Valar manager or that he and Thiel personally coowned the management company.
Even with those limits, the investment was substantial. It created a durable financial relationship between Epstein’s capital and a firm identified with Thiel.
Epstein’s “Bad Press” Question
The timing of the Valar investment makes a 2015 email exchange especially important.
Epstein told Thiel that he had finance ministers and bankers available for him to meet in New York. Epstein then asked whether his bad press gave Thiel pause.
Thiel reportedly responded that he was not intimidated by bad press. He expressed concern about Epstein’s situation and asked whether the damaging coverage would continue. According to Bloomberg Law’s review of the correspondence, Thiel also suggested comparing notes on strategies for dealing with such publicity.
The exchange establishes awareness, not knowledge of every allegation or criminal act.
It is evidence that:
- Thiel knew Epstein was facing serious public scrutiny.
- Epstein raised the reputational issue directly.
- Thiel continued the conversation rather than ending contact.
- Epstein continued offering financial and political introductions.
The exchange is particularly significant because the reported Valar investment began during the same general period.
Direct Correspondence in 2015
A November 2, 2015 email from Thiel to Epstein concerned scheduling and an overbooked Tuesday morning. The record is preserved as EFTA02483777.
By itself, the email is ordinary. Its value is cumulative. It confirms that Thiel and Epstein communicated directly rather than only through assistants, friends, or investment managers.
The released records include many mundane scheduling messages. Those messages should not be sensationalized. At the same time, repeated scheduling correspondence can establish the duration and routine nature of a relationship.
A corpus mention count is not the same as a count of direct emails. Copies, forwarded material, calendars, news articles, and discussions by third parties can all produce additional appearances of a person’s name.
Wired reported that Thiel appeared at least 2,200 times in a large release of Epstein records. That number should not be interpreted as 2,200 personal communications or meetings. It indicates that Thiel was a recurring figure in the wider documentary corpus.
The 2016 Weekend Invitations
In September 2016, Epstein invited Thiel to a weekend gathering described as involving “interesting politics.”
The email chain referenced Paris, New York, and the Caribbean. Thiel asked about dates, while Epstein attempted to tailor the gathering around the types of people Thiel wanted to meet.
The surviving correspondence appears in EFTA02450837 and EFTA02450873.
In the second document, Epstein asked what types of people Thiel would find “most appetizing,” then offered categories including European, Middle Eastern, and Russian figures, as well as people connected to politics and science.
The language reveals Epstein’s method with unusual clarity. He presented human access as a curated service. He was not simply inviting Thiel to a casual social event. He was offering to assemble a group around Thiel’s interests.
The documents do not identify every attendee, prove where the gathering occurred, or establish that every proposed meeting happened. They do show active coordination between Epstein and Thiel.
“Peter Thiel Loved the Secret Society Idea”
In February 2016, Epstein emailed Joi Ito, then director of the MIT Media Lab, about the idea of a secret society.
Epstein wrote that Peter Thiel “LOVED” the idea, had done considerable work on the concept, and that his efforts had failed so far.
The message is examined by American Freakshow in “Epstein Class Supervillain Peter Thiel Loves Secrets” and has received renewed attention because of Thiel’s involvement with Dialog, a private gathering cofounded by Thiel and Reid Hoffman.
Wired’s investigation of Dialog documented the group’s private retreats and elite membership.
The evidence does not establish that Epstein belonged to Dialog, controlled it, or helped create it. The email records Epstein’s own description of a conversation or idea associated with Thiel. Epstein’s statement should not automatically be treated as Thiel’s exact words.
What can be established is narrower:
- Epstein discussed a secret society concept with Joi Ito.
- Epstein claimed Thiel strongly liked the idea.
- Thiel was involved in a real private gathering called Dialog.
- The available evidence does not prove that Dialog was an Epstein project.
Political Discussions and Brexit
Thiel’s relationship with Epstein also included political conversation.
Relevant correspondence reviewed by Ellie Leonard includes an exchange in which Brexit was characterized as only the beginning of a broader political transformation.
The correspondence belongs to a period when Epstein was attempting to understand and influence political realignments in the United States and Europe. His contacts included Steve Bannon, former and future government officials, foreign political leaders, financiers, and media figures.
Epstein also mentioned Thiel when communicating with Bannon. In messages reviewed by Ellie Leonard’s examination of the Epstein and Bannon emails, Epstein treated access to Thiel as politically useful.
These communications do not establish that Thiel and Epstein operated a joint political project. They show that Epstein saw Thiel as an important political actor and incorporated him into discussions about Trump, Europe, technology, and elite influence.
Epstein Used Thiel’s Name as Social Currency
Epstein repeatedly used Thiel’s name when inviting other influential people to his home.
In September 2014, Epstein invited journalist Michael Wolff to a gathering and listed Thiel among the expected or proposed guests. Other names included Leon Black, Boris Nikolic, Terje Rød Larsen, and Thorbjørn Jagland.
The exchange is discussed in Ellie Leonard’s review of Michael Wolff’s emails to Epstein.
This practice served at least two purposes. First, it made Epstein’s invitations appear valuable. Second, it suggested that Epstein possessed continuing access to prominent people despite his conviction.
A person’s name appearing in an invitation does not prove attendance. Epstein could exaggerate his access. However, when such references are combined with direct correspondence, scheduling records, and follow up messages, they show that the name was not selected at random.
Epstein had enough access to Thiel to use that access when courting other members of his network.
The 2018 Caribbean Invitation
In November 2018, Epstein emailed Thiel about politics and Los Angeles.
According to the released exchange, Epstein told Thiel that he liked Thiel’s “Trump exaggerations not lies,” then asked whether Thiel was enjoying Los Angeles. Thiel replied that he could not complain.
Epstein followed with an invitation: “Dec visit me Caribbean.”
The exchange was reported by TIME, PBS NewsHour, and the Associated Press.
The wording suggests an invitation to one of Epstein’s Caribbean properties. However, it does not prove that Thiel accepted the invitation or visited Little Saint James.
A representative for Thiel stated that Thiel never went to Epstein’s island.
No verified flight record or other primary document reviewed for this article establishes that Thiel traveled there. The invitation is documented. A completed island visit is not.
Epstein’s Investment and the Value of Elite Legitimacy
Epstein benefited from relationships with influential people even when those people had no involvement in his crimes.
Survivor testimony and investigative records describe how Epstein displayed photographs, discussed famous acquaintances, and staged calls or meetings in front of girls and young women. The effect was to make him appear protected, respected, and connected.
Thiel’s name carried particular value. It linked Epstein to Silicon Valley, venture capital, national security technology, libertarian politics, and the emerging Trump movement.
The Valar investment created an additional layer. Epstein was not only inviting Thiel to dinners. His money was invested in a Thiel cofounded financial platform.
That arrangement may have benefited both sides. Epstein gained access to technology investments and the legitimacy of association with an elite venture firm. Valar received significant capital. The available evidence does not establish that the investment was illegal or that Valar knew of undisclosed criminal activity.
The ethical question is separate from the criminal one. Epstein’s conviction and sex offender status were already public when the funds were accepted.
What the Evidence Establishes
The available documentary record establishes that:
- Thiel and Epstein communicated directly.
- They arranged meetings beginning no later than 2014.
- At least one meeting or social encounter occurred, based on Epstein’s follow up message saying that it had been fun.
- Epstein repeatedly attempted to schedule additional meetings with Thiel.
- Epstein introduced Thiel to William Burns.
- Epstein attempted to assemble political, diplomatic, financial, and scientific contacts for Thiel.
- Epstein and Thiel discussed Epstein’s damaging press coverage.
- Thiel did not end the correspondence immediately after Epstein raised that issue.
- Epstein invited Thiel to gatherings in New York and potentially other locations.
- Epstein invited Thiel to visit him in the Caribbean in 2018.
- Epstein invested approximately $40 million in two Valar Ventures funds in 2015 and 2016.
- Epstein referred to Thiel when communicating with political advisers, journalists, academics, and investors.
- Epstein described Thiel as interested in a secret society concept.
- Contact continued many years after Epstein became a registered sex offender.
What the Evidence Does Not Establish
The available evidence does not establish that:
- Thiel participated in Epstein’s sexual abuse or trafficking operation.
- Thiel was accused by a known Epstein survivor of sexual misconduct.
- Thiel visited Little Saint James.
- Thiel flew aboard Epstein’s aircraft.
- Thiel knew the full extent of Epstein’s ongoing conduct.
- Thiel participated in a trafficking conspiracy.
- Epstein owned or controlled Palantir.
- Palantir was an Epstein project.
- Thiel personally directed Founders Fund’s investment in Carbyne.
- Epstein was a manager or cofounder of Valar Ventures.
- Dialog was created by Epstein or operated for Epstein.
- Every meeting listed in Epstein’s calendars occurred.
These limits are essential. Association with Epstein requires scrutiny, but association alone is not proof of criminal conduct.

Key Findings
First, the relationship was not limited to a name in an address book. Direct emails, meetings, financial investments, and introductions establish substantive contact.
Second, the relationship developed after Epstein’s conviction. This removes the possibility that every interaction occurred before the public knew about his conduct.
Third, Epstein was useful to Thiel as an international connector. He offered diplomats, finance ministers, bankers, scientists, political figures, and investment opportunities.
Fourth, Thiel’s business network was useful to Epstein. The Valar investment gave Epstein access to potentially lucrative technology investments and associated him with a respected venture platform.
Fifth, the surviving communications show awareness of Epstein’s reputational crisis. Epstein directly asked whether the bad press was a problem.
Sixth, the evidence does not connect Thiel to Epstein’s sexual crimes. The documented subject is access, money, political conversation, and elite networking.

- Which Valar partners approved the investments?
- Did Thiel know that Epstein was the ultimate source of the $40 million when the commitments were accepted?
- Were Epstein’s investments disclosed to all relevant Valar partners and portfolio companies?
- Did Epstein receive special access to investments, founders, or financial information?
- What tax or estate planning advice did Epstein or his advisers provide to Thiel?
- Did Thiel attend any gathering at an Epstein property outside Little Saint James?
- What did Thiel understand about Epstein’s legal history when he discussed strategies for managing bad press?

- What role, if any, did Epstein play in bringing Carbyne to investors associated with Thiel?
- Why did the relationship continue into 2018?
- Were there communications after the last currently documented exchange?
