Stephen Hawking was a British theoretical physicist and cosmologist whose name appears in records connected to Jeffrey Epstein.
The documented connection centers on a physics conference funded by Epstein in the United States Virgin Islands in March 2006. Hawking attended the conference, participated in related excursions, and visited Little Saint James with other scientists.
Photographs and conference records establish Hawking’s presence. However, the available evidence does not establish that Hawking participated in sexual abuse, trafficking, or any other criminal conduct.

Who Was Stephen Hawking?
Stephen Hawking was one of the most recognizable scientists of the modern era. His research examined black holes, gravity, cosmology, and the origins of the universe.
Hawking served as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge from 1979 until 2009. His books, including A Brief History of Time, introduced complex ideas about space and time to a worldwide audience.
He lived for decades with motor neurone disease and required extensive assistance from professional carers. His international reputation made his attendance valuable to scientific conferences, universities, donors, and organizations seeking public legitimacy.
The 2006 Physics Conference
In March 2006, Hawking attended a physics conference in St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands.
The meeting was organized around questions involving gravity, cosmology, and fundamental physics. Lawrence Krauss helped organize the gathering, which brought together prominent scientists including David Gross, Alan Guth, Kip Thorne, Lisa Randall, Frank Wilczek, and Gerard ’t Hooft.
Epstein funded the event through his science and philanthropy network.
Contemporary material from the Edge Foundation described the conference topic as “Confronting Gravity.” Participants stayed at the Ritz Carlton in St. Thomas, attended scientific presentations, and joined recreational excursions.
The conference took place several months before Epstein’s Florida criminal charges became public. Palm Beach police were already investigating Epstein, but there is no evidence that Hawking knew about that investigation when he accepted the invitation.
Hawking’s Visit to Little Saint James
Conference participants traveled to Little Saint James, Epstein’s private island near St. Thomas.
Photographs show Hawking with other scientists during the conference period. Contemporary accounts also document Hawking traveling with Lawrence Krauss to an Atlantis submarine excursion.
Some photographs were taken on or near Epstein’s island. The images establish location and association. They do not, by themselves, establish criminal conduct.
The distinction is important because Epstein used Little Saint James for both legitimate social events and criminal activity. A person’s documented presence on the island does not establish knowledge of, or participation in, Epstein’s crimes.
The Photographs
Photographs from the 2006 gathering show Hawking participating in conference activities and social events.
One image that received renewed attention showed Hawking with two women wearing swimwear. Hawking’s family later stated that the women were his longtime carers. Hawking required continuous physical assistance because of his advanced motor neurone disease.
Other images show Hawking seated with scientists and traveling to the submarine excursion.
The photographs confirm that Hawking attended the conference and related activities. They do not show sexual activity or abuse.
Readers should be cautious when photographs from the Epstein files circulate without their original date, location, or conference context.
Epstein’s Use of Science and Prestige
Epstein cultivated relationships with respected scientists, universities, and intellectual organizations. These relationships gave him access to influential institutions and allowed him to present himself as a serious patron of scientific research.
Hawking’s participation gave the 2006 conference enormous public prestige. His presence did not necessarily indicate a close personal relationship with Epstein. However, it contributed to the image Epstein promoted as a wealthy supporter of advanced science.
The conference illustrates how Epstein used philanthropy and exclusive gatherings to place himself among internationally respected academics.
Other members of Epstein’s documented academic network included Lawrence Krauss, Marvin Minsky, Martin Nowak, and Noam Chomsky.
Each relationship must be evaluated separately. Participation in the same network does not prove that every participant understood Epstein’s criminal conduct.
The 2015 Epstein Email
Hawking’s name appeared again in a January 2015 email written by Epstein during a period of intense legal and public scrutiny.
In the email, Epstein discussed issuing a reward to people who could help disprove what he described as an allegation involving Hawking and an “underage orgy” in the Virgin Islands.
This document records Epstein’s words. It does not establish that the described event occurred.
The available public record does not contain a corresponding sworn statement from Virginia Giuffre directly making that allegation against Hawking. Epstein’s characterization should therefore not be presented as proven fact or as a verified quotation from Giuffre.
A separate Epstein message asserted that a former girlfriend could say there had been no sexual activity involving Hawking. That statement was part of Epstein’s broader effort to challenge Giuffre’s account and manage his public reputation. It was not an independent investigative finding.
The relevant Epstein Data evidence includes the January 2015 denial and witness strategy email and the searchable Wolff and Epstein email archive.
The Court Document Release
Hawking’s name attracted widespread attention when records from Giuffre v. Maxwell were unsealed in January 2024.
His name appeared in two significant contexts.
First, the records included Epstein’s email about offering a reward to disprove the claim he described.
Second, a discovery request asked Giuffre to produce photographs or recordings involving numerous named people, including Hawking.
A discovery request is not evidence that the requested material existed. Lawyers frequently request broad categories of potential evidence during litigation.
The unsealed records did not establish that Hawking committed sexual misconduct.
Fabricated Claims About Hawking
The 2024 document release produced a wave of false and altered material on social media.
One widely circulated image claimed to reproduce court testimony describing unusual sexual “proclivities” attributed to Hawking. The image was fabricated and did not appear in the released court documents.
The Associated Press and other fact checking organizations confirmed that the supposed court excerpt was not authentic.
The fake image was especially harmful because it mixed Hawking’s genuine appearance in the records with invented text. This made the fabrication appear plausible to readers who knew that Hawking had attended an Epstein funded event.
Authentic records should be distinguished from memes, edited screenshots, artificial images, and unsupported commentary.
Hawking’s Contact Information in the Epstein Files
An additional document in the released corpus has the subject line “S. Hawking’s contact info.”
The document shows that Hawking’s contact information was requested or circulated within Epstein’s extended network. It provides evidence that people connected to Epstein sought a means of contacting Hawking.
The document does not, by itself, prove direct correspondence between Hawking and Epstein.
The original record can be reviewed through Epstein Data document EFTA02076108.
Was Hawking Accused of a Crime?
Hawking was not charged with a crime connected to Epstein.
No public court judgment found that Hawking participated in Epstein’s trafficking operation. No released law enforcement record identifies Hawking as a criminal suspect in the Epstein investigation.
The strongest verified evidence establishes that Hawking attended an Epstein funded scientific conference, visited Little Saint James during an organized excursion, appeared in photographs, and was later mentioned in Epstein’s correspondence.
That documentary association justifies inclusion in an index of Epstein’s network. It does not justify describing Hawking as an offender.

Why Stephen Hawking Belongs on EpsteinWiki
Hawking belongs on EpsteinWiki because his attendance at the 2006 conference is part of the documented history of Epstein’s science network.
His presence demonstrates Epstein’s ability to attract respected scholars and Nobel Prize winners to events he financed. That access strengthened Epstein’s reputation as a philanthropist and scientific patron.
The entry must remain proportional to the evidence. Hawking’s association is documented. Criminal misconduct by Hawking is not.
This distinction supports both historical transparency and responsible reporting.
