Dogs, Horses and Other Animals in Jeffrey Epstein’s Files

The animal correspondence in Epstein’s files extends beyond kittens. It includes named dogs, guard dog contracts, Great Dane purchases, riding horses, livestock, aquarium fish and inquiries about exotic birds. Staff coordinated breeders, transport, training, feeding, veterinary care and decisions about animals at Zorro Ranch, Little Saint James and other locations.
The Zorro Duke email reports a dog’s death and proposes burial beside an animal called Max, on a point toward the lodge. A separate ranch log records the death and burial of Thunder, a black quarter horse.
The July 2011 livestock removal message reports Epstein telling staff to get rid of animals and to just “kill” them. Later correspondence documents attempts to sell or rehome animals and identifies several successful placements. The reported instruction and subsequent outcomes must be examined separately.

Search Scope and Interpretation
Our review examined animal terms alongside property names, staff names and Epstein’s email identifier. The expanded contextual search returned 4,331 matching pages across 4,173 document identifiers. Additional searches for named dogs returned 190 matching pages.
Those figures measure search results. They do not count distinct animals or conversations. This article organizes the substantive animal evidence located in that review. It does not establish that every animal reference in every released collection has been recovered.
Important distinctions include:
- An offered animal is not necessarily an acquired animal.
- An approved purchase is not necessarily proof of delivery.
- A quoted contract amount is different from an independently verified payment.
- A proposed burial location is different from confirmation that burial occurred there.
- Staff reports of illness are different from complete veterinary records.
- Animal names can recur across species and years.
- Staff pets are different from animals owned by Epstein.
- Decorative birds, animal artwork and wildlife are different from household pets.

The Duke correspondence refers to burial beside Max in March 2010. The horse called Max is alive in later ranch reports. The two references must not be merged without further identification.
Purchased Dogs and the Global K9 Relationship
EFTA01780675 records Epstein’s January 18, 2009 message to Brice Gordon asking whether they should contact the place where they bought dogs and exchange them for new ones, paying the difference. The message does not name the dogs.
EFTA02442376 records Brice’s May 7, 2009 message titled “Guard Dogs LSJ.” Brice says an attached spreadsheet breaks down cost options under a signed Global K9 Group contract. He recommends retaining Luca and replacing Rex with Prince after viewing available dogs at the kennel.
EFTA01811908 records Emad Hanna’s May 4, 2010 explanation of the original contract. He gives a total of $26,665, consisting of $8,865 for Rex and $17,800 for a female dog.
Hanna says Rex was returned because of leg problems and explains why a credit of approximately $9,000 was being discussed. He separately asks whether Epstein had been promised a credit for the female.
EFTA02420151 records Hanna’s May 24 report that Terry, identified as Global K9’s owner, would deal only with Brice. Hanna says he informed Brice of Epstein’s instructions about getting the female back and replacing Rex.
These records describe a contract, named dogs, returns and a dispute over credits. The complete signed contract and financial records remain necessary to resolve the final accounting.
Dobermans, Handlers and Property Security
EFTA00761483 preserves an April 2010 exchange about Dobermans and guard dogs. Epstein asks for prices and timing and asks whether Brice wants to be the handler.
Brice discusses:
- Global K9’s ability to provide Dobermans.
- Finding suitable dogs.
- A handler visiting the facility for instruction.
- Possible temporary use of a loaned dog.
- Kennel requirements.
- Palm Beach staff Igor or Janusz as possible handlers.
- Responsibility for health, feeding and exercise.
- Whether the dogs would go to Palm Beach or directly to the island.
Brice advises against introducing guard dogs to Little Saint James while extensive construction and unfamiliar personnel are present. He recommends a dog trained to bark at unfamiliar people near the house or dock.
He also relays concerns about Dobermans in the island climate and suggests another breed might be more suitable.
EFTA00760144 records an April 19 quotation and photographs for available dogs. Listed filenames include Prince, Joker, Eika and Jojo. These are selection leads, not proof that each dog was acquired.
Brice describes prices varying around $10,000 to $12,000 depending on selection and says there is no charge for one dog.
EFTA00736820 records Epstein saying in July 2010 that the dog need not be a guard dog, only a smart dog.
EFTA00738187 preserves Brice sending dog photographs for consideration and commenting on Doberman intelligence.
EFTA01868321 records an April 2011 message confirming Dobermans were at Global K9’s Orlando kennels and asking when someone should view them.
EFTA01777493 records Larry Visoski arranging to video dogs near Sanford Airport in May 2011 and asking permission to use the Bell 407 helicopter. This documents a proposed inspection and transport arrangement rather than an animal delivery.
Ball e, Peabo and Dog Training
EFTA00738787 preserves August 2009 correspondence about Ball e’s training. The correspondent says the trainer must deliver the dog, establish the continuing training arrangements and explain commands and hand signals before the dog can be accepted at the house.
EFTA00770818 preserves a September 2009 discussion about finding a dog for Marvin. The quoted message mentions the place where Peabo was obtained and the closed store where Ball e was found. It asks about the preferred sex and color of the proposed dog.
EFTA00743661 records a December 2009 discussion about Peabo’s training, appearance and interaction with Ball e. Epstein asks whether the discussion concerns the people or the dogs. The exchange uses the dogs as a comparison within a personal relationship.
EFTA00742973 records a June 30, 2010 reply saying the writer will return to Zorro to collect Ball e before going to New York. This directly places Ball e at Zorro at that point in the proposed itinerary.
EFTA02438246 records an October 2009 Flip video message describing Ball e interacting with pigs and chasing a cow before getting cactus in her paws.
The sender is displayed as “Baby.” The nickname does not identify the person or establish a human infant. The record lists a two minute video but does not itself establish that the footage has been recovered and viewed.
Ball e’s Pregnancy, Birth and the Dispute About Care
EFTA00747686 records Epstein’s March 31, 2010 message about Ball e, Peabo and Fatt e. He calls Ball e his gift to the correspondent and says he did not want her pregnant.
He criticizes the decision to keep Peabo around her and describes preparations for the dog to give birth in the house.
The message mixes animal care with accusations about the correspondent’s competence and their personal relationship. Epstein’s accusations are his account, not independent findings of veterinary negligence.
EFTA02529188 preserves the April 1 continuation and the correspondent’s response. Epstein explicitly refers to Ball e becoming pregnant by Peabo.
The correspondent says decisions during the birth were based on veterinary advice and that Story remained on the telephone through the night. The reply disputes Epstein’s characterization of the decisions.
It also discusses something happening to Fatt e and the writer’s feelings of guilt. The reviewed thread does not provide a complete veterinary diagnosis or a reliable reconstruction of every animal’s outcome.
This correspondence concerns a dog pregnancy and birth. References to birth equipment, gloves, pregnancy and nighttime assistance in this thread concern Ball e. They do not establish a human pregnancy.
Duke’s Death and the Proposed Zorro Burial Location
EFTA02427204 preserves the March 28, 2010 “Zorro Duke” thread. Brice reports that Duke died in his sleep the previous afternoon and was found in his kennel during evening feeding.
Brice assumes Duke should be buried next to Max, on the point toward the lodge. Ghislaine Maxwell replies that she heard Duke had lung cancer and describes him as a wonderful dog.
The evidentiary distinctions are important:
- Duke’s death is reported by staff.
- Lung cancer is reported secondhand by Maxwell.
- The proposed burial location is described relative to the lodge.
- The reviewed message does not confirm completion of the burial at that location.
- The identity and species of Max in this thread remain unresolved.
The location description is a documentary lead. It is not a mapped coordinate or evidence of a human burial.
Great Danes for Zorro
EFTA02314546 preserves Epstein’s August 12, 2012 request for two fawn colored Great Danes for the ranch. Staff discuss finding breeders, obtaining photographs and inspecting puppies.
EFTA02314741 records Brice proposing a coordinated search so staff do not contact the same breeders repeatedly. He recommends reviewing photographs before arranging a kennel visit.
EFTA01934518 preserves March 2014 negotiations involving three Great Dane puppies. The initial quoted offer lists $900 per puppy, $1,000 shipping from Missouri and a 50 percent deposit.
Brice says the puppies were neutered and accustomed to being outside. He notes that other breeders were concerned about dogs being kept outdoors.
The chain later says the seller sold one puppy after arrangements for three had been confirmed. Brice asks whether to proceed with two and quotes $1,200 for American Airlines delivery. Epstein replies “ok.”
The changing numbers are stages of one negotiation, not separate completed purchases.
EFTA01928148 records an April 21 reply saying the dogs are expected the first weekend of May.
EFTA01926186 records an April 29 update moving the planned delivery to the weekend of May 16.
EFTA01923373 records Brice’s concern about proceeding with one puppy without a companion and his question about seeking a refund.
EFTA00989233 records a May 17 update saying the breeder regarded the $1,500 deposit as nonrefundable. Brice asks whether to forfeit it or wait for another litter and obtain three puppies.
These messages establish an interrupted procurement process. They do not establish that all initially proposed puppies reached Zorro.
Scottish Deerhounds, Later Great Dane Offers and a Chow Chow Inquiry
EFTA01788746 records John Christensen’s June 9, 2014 recommendation of Scottish Deerhounds for Zorro.
He describes them as suitable for the environment, exercise companions and a way to keep deer away from the main house. The quoted puppy prices range from $1,000 to $2,000.
EFTA00999555 records November 2014 Great Dane offers. One option describes a male and female pair with an initial asking price of $6,000 each.
A later message quotes two male brindle dogs at $4,800 each, delivered to New Mexico, with optional ear cropping at $140 per dog.
EFTA00999938 discusses drooling and suggests wolfhounds as a possible alternative. The discussion does not establish acquisition of wolfhounds.
EFTA02472548 records a February 2016 message about finding a Chow Chow breeder and says Blueberry would approve. The sender and intended purchaser are not securely identified in the reviewed passage. This establishes an inquiry, not a purchase.
Horses and Stable Operations
EFTA02334029 records Brice and Karen’s September 26, 2003 stable report to Maxwell. They propose sourcing feed and supplies locally rather than making a lengthy round trip to Albuquerque. The report lists weights for Diablo, Missy and Chester.
EFTA01995829 records a February 2011 update mentioning two remaining guest riding horses after Thunder’s death, Max’s severe eye injury and a rescued yearling colt given to Mano. The writer asks whether the colt can remain at the ranch.
EFTA02030722 records Wendy’s July 2011 description of two guest horses for trail rides and another horse for an escort. She says she will use her own horse Blue for escorting and lessons.
The same message compares hay suppliers, requests 200 bales of alfalfa at $7.50 per bale and proposes reducing farrier visit frequency to lower expenses.
It also describes stormwater entering the stable’s office, laundry, supply and tack rooms.
EFTA02008895 records Brice’s January 2012 complaint about the stable condition and permission for Wendy’s horses to use the stables while Epstein’s horses are in the fields.
EFTA02009145 preserves a detailed response explaining when horses were kept inside for illness or injury. The report describes:
- Lacerations requiring treatment.
- Skin infections treated with antibiotics and bathing.
- Snakebites.
- Veterinary hospitalization.
- Liquid diets.
- A pregnant mare needing protection during snow and ice.
- Use of the stables to wash and treat horses.
Thor is specifically identified as a ranch horse treated after a snakebite.
The response contests the criticism of stable cleanliness. These are competing staff accounts, not an independent inspection finding.
EFTA02391414 records Karen’s November 2, 2017 request to purchase a calm seven year old horse for $1,000. She says only two horses remain and Flash can no longer be ridden by guests outside the arena.
Epstein replies “ok.” This establishes approval, not a delivery receipt.
EFTA01349419 records a November 9, 2018 check for $321.38 to Robert Holt, with a memo identifying shoeing for Flash and Thor.
Thunder’s Veterinary Treatment, Death and Burial
EFTA01797704 records the January 28, 2011 update about Thunder’s serious stomach problems and veterinary treatment.
Karen asks whether Wendy can make the decision about putting him down if necessary. Epstein’s reply contains a typographical error but contextually approves that option.
EFTA01791603 records Wendy and Mano reporting Thunder’s death the following morning. They describe a suspected twisted intestine and say he had been a key riding horse.
EFTA01797902 records the sequence in a daily ranch log: veterinary visits, overnight care, death early in the morning and burial by Mano.
The correspondence establishes a reported death and burial. It does not establish that euthanasia occurred, despite Epstein’s permission to authorize it. It also does not provide a precise grave location.
The July 2011 Livestock Removal Instructions
EFTA00562975 records Sarah K informing Maxwell that Epstein is getting rid of pigs, miniature horses, goats, Diablo and possibly Max.
Sarah says Wendy believes one miniature horse belongs to Maxwell and wants to know what Maxwell wishes to do with it.
EFTA00562976 records another message that day. It reports that Epstein told Wendy to remove the ranch’s “show” animals, including miniature horses, pigs, a turkey, goats and Diablo.
Sarah says Wendy will try to sell what she can. The message attributes the instruction to just “kill” them to Epstein.
The original PDF confirms that language. It is a reported instruction in an email from Sarah, not a direct message from Epstein or proof that the listed animals were killed.
The message says the anticipated exceptions are chickens kept for eggs and horses that people can ride. This explains why references to removing horses and retaining horses appear together: the distinction concerns which animals remained useful for riding.
EFTA00562981 records Maxwell requesting photographs of the animals and a reply saying Wendy has been asked to send them.
EFTA02029612 records Maxwell suggesting that Diablo and Max could be turned out together without being ridden or put down.
The quoted ranch message discusses selling or giving animals away locally and possible sale of tack.
These messages document troubling language about animal disposal. They do not establish a completed mass killing.
Rehoming Goats, Sheep, Miniature Horses, Turkeys and Diablo
EFTA01775755 records Wendy’s July 18, 2011 update. She reports finding a home where goats, sheep and miniature horses can stay together.
She says turkeys have gone with Patrick, identified as the pest control vendor.
Wendy also asks the woman who found Spock to find another home for him. The reviewed passage does not identify Spock’s species.
She mentions interest in taking Max and says she is still working on Diablo and the pigs.
EFTA02030722 records Wendy reporting a new home for Diablo with a family on July 26. She says the other animals requested for removal are off the ranch and that livestock feed expenses have been cut in half.
The message establishes removal and reports a specific placement for Diablo. It does not individually trace the final destination or fate of every pig, chicken, miniature horse or other animal.
Cattle Purchases, Branding and Grazing Arrangements
EFTA01995829 records a February 2011 update anticipating a cow giving birth and saying cattle prices were delaying further purchases.
EFTA00621487 provides a Zorro cattle purchase accounting schedule.
It records a $15,000 transfer to Steve’s personal account, cattle purchased through Roswell Livestock Auction Sales and a stated total of 15 animals. The accounting memo identifies nine heifers and six steers, with a cattle total of $10,919.50.
The schedule also contains accommodation and corral expenses. Its final arithmetic is inconsistent. The cattle subtotal can be reported as written, but the inconsistent grand total should not be silently corrected or treated as reconciled accounting.
EFTA00674909 records Karen sending photographs of cattle branding on April 15, 2011. The listed ZIP attachment is an image lead.
EFTA00630482 records February 2012 correspondence about final grazing lease paperwork and a meeting with attorney David Gordon so Steve can bring cattle onto the ranch.
These animals belong in the livestock evidence rather than being automatically classified as household pets.
Live Birds Offered for the Island
EFTA01758156 records Ann Rodriquez’s June 3, 2013 message titled “Birds for the Island.”
She identifies MD Bird Farm as a possible supplier of parrots, cockatoos and other exotic birds and asks whether to purchase birds there.
EFTA00669367 records Epstein asking for bird prices. Ann supplies image filenames for macaws and cockatoos and quotes a $1,500 cockatoo at Louie’s Pet Shop on St. Thomas.

Ann says the MD Bird Farm prices exclude shipping. She also relays advice from the pet shop concerning keeping birds outside cages. That advice is part of the correspondence, not a verified animal care recommendation.
The reviewed messages establish live bird inquiries and price quotations. They do not independently establish which birds were purchased or their later care.
Decorative Parrots and False Bird Matches
EFTA01871329 records Epstein asking for parrot bases to be completed and secured against hurricanes in April 2012.
EFTA00672117 records Brice saying a parrot needed minor repair and would be put back that day.
EFTA00633729 records a March 2014 exchange about painting the parrots the same gold as the dome.
Painting, repairs, bases and hurricane tie downs identify these as decorative fixtures in their respective threads. They should not be counted as live bird ownership evidence.
The separate live bird purchase inquiries must be evaluated on their own.
Aquarium Fish and Other Animal References
EFTA00678818 records Epstein’s August 2013 request for a small fish tank with fish. Ann recommends a $150 Tetra tank and says individual fish cost between $3 and $15.
EFTA00650524 records Larry Visoski’s October 30, 2014 message saying he purchased 13 fish for Epstein’s aquarium in St. Thomas. He lists:
- Three fish described as sharks.
- Four fluorescent glow fish.
- Two algae eaters.
- Two described as tiger fish.
- Two described as Dalmatian fish.
Larry says some are aggressive and he will keep them separate.
These are the purchaser’s descriptions, not verified scientific species identifications. The aquarium reference does not establish that the fish described as sharks were large marine sharks.
EFTA00641968 records Eva Dubin asking, “How is Paris little turtle” in May 2012. The wording is ambiguous and does not securely establish a turtle’s ownership or location.
EFTA00629294 includes an “Iguana crossing area” among island landscaping projects. That is evidence of a named project area, not proof of a captive pet iguana.
EFTA00567536 records the Zorro photograph exchange concerning an animal described as a ring tailed cat found at the lodge. The description remains informal until the photograph can establish the species.
Staff Pets, Visiting Dogs and Animal Facilities
EFTA00487479 records Karyna’s December 2018 message to Lesley Groff expressing hope that Lesley is enjoying her puppy. This concerns Lesley’s pet.
EFTA00315414 includes a June 2017 calendar entry for Michael and Kimberly Ross arriving with three dogs. A scheduled arrival is not independent confirmation that it occurred.
EFTA02014714 discusses a proposed staff housing arrangement involving two dogs and use of the main house dog pen. It also asks about permission for staff animals to be brought onto the ranch.
EFTA00612208 identifies a dog run between the main building and staff house in a March 2013 Zorro landscaping proposal.
EFTA01797902 identifies a leak outside the dog pen in the January 2011 ranch log.
Together, these records establish animal facilities at the ranch without proving which dogs occupied them at each date.
Photographs, Videos and Survivor Evidence
EFTA01139414 contains declaration material describing a photograph of the declarant riding one of Epstein’s horses at Zorro. The passage provides a documentary connection between riding horses and visits to the ranch.

Quotations, deposits, approvals, contract descriptions and checks represent different stages of a transaction. They should not be added together as a reconciled animal expenditure total.
