Eva Andersson Dubin: The Former Girlfriend Who Kept Jeffrey Epstein Inside the Family

Eva Andersson Dubin’s place in the Jeffrey Epstein record cannot be explained by a single flight, photograph, donation, or social encounter. She was Epstein’s former girlfriend, a longtime family confidante, a frequent passenger on his aircraft, a continuing correspondent, a medical contact, and a bridge into charitable and institutional spaces.
Their romantic relationship began in the 1980s. Their documented association continued for decades.
After Eva married hedge fund manager Glenn Dubin in 1994, Epstein remained close to the couple and their children. The Dubin children knew him as “Uncle F.” Eva and Glenn traveled with him, hosted him, communicated with his staff, accepted favors involving his residences, and included him in family and charitable events.
Most significantly, the relationship survived Epstein’s 2008 conviction.
In 2009, Eva and Glenn expressly acknowledged that Epstein was a registered sex offender who had pleaded guilty to an offense involving a minor. They nevertheless told his probation officer that they were “100% comfortable” with him around their three minor children. Epstein then attended Thanksgiving at their Palm Beach home.
The surviving records document continued access after that decision. They include a 2010 invitation to visit while Eva’s fifteen year old daughter had five friends present, medical coordination, Mount Sinai fundraising, a proposed “Epstein Floor for Women,” personal emails, business introductions, apartment requests, and communications extending into 2019.
Eva has denied participating in abuse and has said she did not know the full extent of Epstein’s crimes. She has not been criminally charged or convicted in an Epstein related case. Several serious allegations touching the Dubin household remain disputed and were never adjudicated as claims against Eva.
The evidence does not justify calling her a convicted coconspirator. It does justify a much harder question: why did a physician, parent, philanthropist, and former intimate partner continue treating Epstein as a trusted member of the family after his conviction was no longer secret?
Executive Snapshot
Full name: Eva Birgitta Andersson Dubin
Also known as: Eva Andersson, Eva Andersson Dubin, Eva Dubin
Born: 1961 in Uddevalla, Sweden
Profession: Physician, philanthropist, former model
Public roles: Founder of the Dubin Breast Center at Mount Sinai and Mount Sinai trustee
Spouse: Glenn Dubin
Children: Three
Relationship to Epstein: Former girlfriend, family confidante, passenger, correspondent, medical contact, and philanthropic intermediary
Dating period according to Eva: “Off and on” from 1983 until approximately 1990 or 1991
Documented later contact: Flights, holidays, private correspondence, charitable activity, medical coordination, housing favors, social events, and introductions continuing after Epstein’s 2008 conviction

Central evidence distinction: The documentary record proves prolonged access and continued association. It does not, by itself, prove knowledge of or participation in every crime committed by Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
Background
Eva Birgitta Andersson was born in Uddevalla, Sweden, in 1961. She worked as a model, won Miss Sweden in 1980, and placed fourth runner up in the 1980 Miss Universe competition.
According to the Dubin Family Foundation’s official biography, Andersson studied at the Karolinska Institutet before attending the UCLA School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree in 1989, trained at Lenox Hill Hospital, and became board certified in internal medicine in 1993. She later worked as an in house physician for NBCUniversal.
Andersson married Glenn Dubin in 1994. Glenn cofounded Highbridge Capital Management and became a major figure in hedge fund management, philanthropy, and New York society.
Following her own breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, Eva helped create the Dubin Breast Center at Mount Sinai. A 2010 Mount Sinai announcement described her perspective as combining the experiences of physician, patient, and donor. The center opened in 2011 as part of the Tisch Cancer Institute.
The center’s work and Dubin’s medical career are separate from the question of her relationship with Epstein. A complete account must recognize both without allowing philanthropy to erase the documentary record.
The Relationship With Jeffrey Epstein
Dating from 1983 to approximately 1991
During Maxwell’s 2021 federal trial, Eva testified that she dated Jeffrey Epstein “off and on” beginning in 1983. She placed the end of the relationship around 1990 or 1991.
A federal prosecution memorandum summarizing an interview with former Epstein house manager Juan Alessi supports the basic sequence. Alessi recalled that Eva Andersson was Epstein’s girlfriend when he began working at the Palm Beach residence. The memorandum says Epstein subsequently began dating Maxwell, who assumed authority over the household. The account appears in EFTA02731168.
The exact endpoint is disputed. During a 2025 Justice Department interview, Maxwell claimed that Epstein and Andersson remained involved until approximately 1993 or 1994. Maxwell’s statement is a later recollection from a convicted participant in Epstein’s operation. It should not override Eva’s sworn dates without corroboration.
Epstein offered his own version in a private email examined by Nina Burleigh and Katie Chenoweth in American Freakshow’s “Jeff and the Blondes”. He claimed that he and Eva had been together for ten years, that she had wanted marriage, and that Glenn Dubin later allowed him to help raise his “goddaughter.”
The email proves what Epstein told a correspondent. It does not independently establish every detail of his claim.
From former girlfriend to family confidante
Eva married Glenn Dubin in 1994. Epstein remained close to both of them.
At Maxwell’s trial, Eva testified that Epstein developed an uncle like relationship with the Dubin children. She said the children were fond of him and called him “Uncle F.” She also testified that she and Glenn were comfortable with that relationship. Her testimony was reported contemporaneously by The Guardian.
A later Mount Sinai fundraising email provides documentary confirmation of the nickname. In 2013, Mount Sinai development staff asked Epstein’s assistant how his sponsorship of a Dubin Breast Center event should be identified. The email stated that previous recognition had listed him as either “Uncle F” or “Enhanced Education Fund.” The chain appears in EFTA02127350.
This was years after Epstein’s conviction. “Uncle F” was not merely a private childhood nickname. It was apparently used as a possible public donor designation at a major medical institution.
Address book and operational access
Eva appeared in Epstein’s contact records with multiple telephone numbers. Her presence in a contact book does not prove misconduct, but the number of entries is consistent with the broader evidence of continuing access.
A staff document listing important telephone numbers for Epstein’s assistants included Eva alongside operational contacts such as Lesley Groff, Darren Indyke, Richard Kahn, and Jean Luc Brunel. The record appears in EFTA00282489.
Placement on that sheet does not make every listed person a member of a criminal conspiracy. It shows that Eva was important enough to Epstein’s household operation for his assistants to keep her number readily available.
Flight Records
Published flight manifests repeatedly list Eva aboard Epstein controlled aircraft during the 1990s and early 2000s. The logs admitted during Maxwell’s trial are available through the Justice Department’s flight log exhibit.
An Epstein Data comparison identified approximately thirty four shared flights involving Eva and Epstein between 1995 and 2005. Sample dates include:
- November 21, 1995
- March 22, 1996
- March 24, 1996
- April 8, 1996
- November 7, 1996
- November 11, 1996
- November 17, 1996
- December 12, 1996
- January 5, 1997
- February 13, 1997
Later manifests include members of the Dubin family traveling with Epstein employees and associates. Because names, initials, duplicate entries, and family groupings vary, totals compiled by different databases do not always match.
The correct conclusion is limited but important. Eva’s travel with Epstein was repeated, not isolated.
Flight logs do not prove that a passenger participated in abuse. They establish recorded movement, association, and access. Any allegation tied to a specific journey must be tested against the date, route, passenger list, and original manifest page.
The 2009 Probation Statement
Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to offenses that included procuring a person under eighteen for prostitution. He served approximately thirteen months in custody and became a registered sex offender.
In 2009, the Dubins invited him to Thanksgiving at their Palm Beach home. Because Epstein was under supervision, the gathering required approval.
Eva and Glenn sent a written statement to his probation officer. They acknowledged his conviction and sex offender status, stated that all three of their children were under eighteen, and added:
“I am 100% comfortable with Jeffrey Epstein around my children.”
Eva identified herself as an internist who had known Epstein for more than twenty years. An image of the statement and the surrounding reporting appear in Business Insider’s investigation.
The document establishes four facts:
- The Dubins knew Epstein was a registered sex offender.
- They knew his guilty plea involved a minor.
- They knew their own children were minors.
- They affirmatively endorsed his continued access to those children.
It does not prove that Epstein abused a member of the Dubin family. It does disprove any suggestion that his criminal status was unknown to Eva when the post conviction relationship continued.
A 2026 Senate Finance Committee report cited the Thanksgiving episode while examining the prestigious relationships and financial institutions that continued to surround Epstein.
Continued Family Access After Conviction
The August 2010 invitation
A Justice Department released email dated August 14, 2010 records Eva telling Epstein:
“Come and visit next week. Celina will have 5 friends over.”
Celina was fifteen at the time, according to public reporting. A Dubin representative later said the five friends consisted of four boys and one girl.
The email does not prove that Epstein accepted the invitation, met the teenagers, or committed misconduct during the proposed visit. It does prove that Eva used the presence of her teenage daughter’s friends while inviting a registered sex offender to the family home.
Lisa Tait examined the message and the family’s response in “Epstein’s Creepiest Couple: Eva and Glenn Dubin”. Tait’s judgments are commentary. The date, wording, Epstein’s status, and Celina’s age provide the factual core.
School and family events
Records released in 2026 show that Epstein attended a 2012 school lacrosse game in which Celina played. A family spokesperson said Epstein watched from the sidelines with her parents. Later correspondence recorded Epstein telling Celina that it had been his first game.
The importance is not the sporting event itself. It is the family normalization it represents. Epstein was not being kept at a distance after his conviction. He remained present for an event involving a minor child.
Housing favors involving Eva’s friends
A May 8, 2014 email records Eva thanking Epstein’s assistant for allowing her friends to stay in an apartment. She then asked whether another friend, who was moving out of a Columbia University dormitory and helped with Eva’s children, could use a studio for one or two weeks.
Lesley Groff replied that she would check availability. The exchange appears in EFTA00369878.
The email does not establish that the women were victims or that the accommodation involved criminal conduct. It establishes that Eva used Epstein’s residential resources for friends and a young university connected acquaintance after his conviction.
Personal communications
The surviving email record includes continuing casual contact:
- EFTA01786466, EFTA01786491, and EFTA01805233 record a July 2010 discussion about typhoid vaccination and travel.
- EFTA01765357 records a December 2012 communication concerning Oslo and Paris.
- EFTA00655647 preserves a May 20, 2013 personal exchange about a death involving someone Epstein called a “sultan.” EpsteinWiki maintains a separate analysis of that document.
- EFTA00976752 records a November 2013 exchange in which Eva asked Epstein where he was and discussed mutual acquaintances.
- EFTA00688048 records Eva instructing Epstein to call her at home in July 2014.
- EFTA00337646 is an October 2015 email with the subject “Jeffrey Epstein.”
- EFTA02282226 contains an April 2019 communication from Eva to Epstein assistant Lesley Groff.
No single message proves a crime. Together, they establish that the relationship remained active across the decade following Epstein’s conviction.
Celina Dubin, the “Goddaughter,” and Epstein’s Private Claims
The records concerning Celina require careful treatment. She was a child when Epstein entered her life and should not be blamed for access created by adults.
Epstein referred to Celina as his goddaughter and was known to her as “Uncle F.” Released records show his involvement in family events, photographs, communications, gifts, and attempts to facilitate opportunities.
Documents concerning a possible modeling shoot include EFTA01876589. Other records show that Epstein retained photographs and discussed Celina with associates.
In 2019, Business Insider reported that Epstein told associates he had considered marrying Celina when she was nineteen. According to the report, he framed marriage as a way for her to inherit his fortune while avoiding inheritance taxes.
The publication also reported that Celina was temporarily named as a beneficiary of an Epstein trust. A released trust record appears in EFTA01460274.
The Dubin family said it did not know she had been named. Celina later renounced any interest. There is no evidence that Epstein and Celina entered a romantic relationship.
The family has also strongly rejected suggestions that Epstein was responsible for Celina’s admission to Harvard or her medical career. Her academic accomplishments should not be erased because an adult offender inserted himself into her family environment.
American Freakshow’s reporting places Epstein’s language about Eva and his “goddaughter” inside his broader pattern of fixation on young women. That contextual analysis is relevant, but Epstein’s private claims must still be labeled as his claims.
The Dubin Breast Center and Epstein’s Money
The Celina Dubin United Fund
Business Insider reported that Epstein wanted to support Eva’s breast cancer project after his conviction, when a direct public donation could have created reputational problems.
According to tax records reviewed by the publication, Eva established the Celina Dubin United Fund. Epstein contributed $50,000. The fund subsequently donated approximately $26,600 to the breast cancer project between 2010 and 2012.
The Dubins said Glenn learned of the arrangement in 2013 and asked Eva to close the fund. Approximately $22,000 in unspent money was reportedly returned to an Epstein foundation.
The records indicate that an intermediary organization stood between Epstein and a project carrying the Dubin name. They do not, without additional evidence, prove that the structure violated tax or criminal law.
Epstein’s sponsorship and “Uncle F”
A 2013 Mount Sinai development chain shows Epstein sponsoring a Dubin Breast Center luncheon and symposium. Staff coordinated a table for his guests and asked how the gift should be credited.
The email stated that prior recognition had used “Uncle F” or “Enhanced Education Fund.” It also said Eva had mentioned that Epstein would be seating a table. The complete chain appears in EFTA02127350.
This document connects several parts of the relationship:
- Epstein remained a financial supporter of a Mount Sinai event.
- Eva was involved in communicating his expected participation.
- His family nickname was used as a donor designation.
- The activity occurred five years after his conviction.
The proposed “Epstein Floor for Women”
On October 3, 2013, Eva sent Epstein a description of a proposed $5 million project for an all women’s postoperative cancer floor.
The proposal said the unit would serve women recovering from ovarian, uterine, cervical, or breast cancer surgery. It described nursing, physical therapy, hair care, yoga, and psychosocial services. It then offered a naming opportunity:
“The floor would have a naming opportunity, for example The Epstein Floor for Women, if so desired.”
The direct record is EFTA01953412.
No reviewed evidence establishes that Epstein funded the complete project or that the floor was built and named for him. The email proves that Eva offered the naming opportunity years after his conviction.
Photographic evidence from the 2012 gala
Epstein was photographed with Eva at a December 10, 2012 benefit for the Dubin Breast Center.
Bekah Day’s investigation into the gala archive also identified Howard and Allison Lutnick at the event. The photographs place both Epstein and the Lutnicks at the gala, although no reviewed image shows them posing together.
For Eva’s article, the central fact is simpler: Epstein continued appearing openly at an event supporting the medical center she founded after his conviction.
Medical Coordination and Institutional Access
Released communications show that Epstein treated Eva as a medical resource and connection to Mount Sinai physicians.
Records including EFTA01915127 and EFTA01915374 refer to Eva consulting with doctors and encouraging a patient to travel to Mount Sinai for evaluation or treatment.
Other released correspondence indicates that Epstein repeatedly sought medical appointments and assistance for himself and women in his circle.
Those records require case specific analysis. A medical referral is not inherently improper. The presence of a young woman in Epstein’s circle does not by itself establish that she was a trafficking victim. Patient privacy must also be respected.
What the record establishes is institutional access. Epstein could ask Eva for help navigating a major hospital system, and she could reach physicians on his behalf.
Mount Sinai issued a 2019 statement about Epstein’s donations. The health system condemned his conduct and said it would direct a sum equal to his donations toward organizations addressing trafficking, sexual exploitation, and survivor care.
In March 2026, The Cancer Letter reported that Mount Sinai had formed a committee to examine its connections to Epstein, including records involving Eva and other faculty members. No final public report from that review was identified when this article was completed.
Business and Social Introductions
Eva’s role was not confined to family and medicine.
In 2026, Bloomberg reported that investment manager David Fiszel contacted Epstein in February 2016 after receiving his address from Eva. Fiszel wrote that Eva had provided the contact information so he could follow up about a proposed Peter Thiel meeting and an investment presentation.
The correspondence shows Eva directing a financial professional toward Epstein approximately eight years after his conviction.
It does not establish that she knew about misconduct in the proposed investment or that the introduction produced a transaction. It establishes that she continued to treat Epstein as a useful and credible financial contact.
Additional records reflect coordination of guests, events, travel, residences, and introductions. The pattern is more significant than any isolated favor. Eva functioned as a continuing social bridge between Epstein and respectable family, financial, charitable, and medical environments.
Survivor Allegations and Sworn Testimony
Virginia Giuffre’s allegation concerning Glenn Dubin
A federal prosecution memorandum records Virginia Giuffre’s statement that Maxwell instructed her to massage Glenn and Eva Dubin.
According to the memorandum, Maxwell told Giuffre that she had to do to Glenn what she did for Epstein. Giuffre understood that instruction to mean sexual acts. The account appears in EFTA02731082.
The wording matters. The memorandum says Giuffre was instructed to massage both Glenn and Eva, but the alleged instruction to perform sexual acts concerned Glenn. It should not be rewritten as an allegation that Giuffre was ordered to perform sexual acts on Eva.
Glenn denied Giuffre’s allegation. The Dubins described allegations contained in the unsealed records as false and defamatory and said flight records and other evidence disproved them.
Glenn was not criminally charged over the allegation. No court entered a judgment finding that the alleged encounter occurred.
Rinaldo Rizzo and the distressed Swedish girl
Rinaldo Rizzo worked in the Dubin household. In a sworn deposition, he described encountering a distressed fifteen year old Swedish girl at the family’s home.
Rizzo testified that the girl said she had been taken to Epstein’s island, pressured to have sex with Epstein, and threatened after refusing. She reportedly said Maxwell had taken her passport. Rizzo recalled that the girl appeared terrified and was “shaking uncontrollably.”
The relevant testimony appears in the unsealed Rizzo deposition exhibit.
The deposition establishes what Rizzo swore he witnessed and what he said the girl disclosed. It is not a judicial finding that every reported event occurred exactly as described.
The record does not establish that Eva took the girl’s passport, threatened her, or heard the disclosure. Its relevance is that a household employee described a frightened minor arriving within the Dubin domestic environment while accompanied by people connected to Epstein.
Jane’s testimony and Eva’s denial
At Maxwell’s trial, the survivor identified publicly as Jane testified about sexualized group encounters that occurred when she was a minor. She said one participant was named Eva but did not provide a surname.
Maxwell’s defense called Eva as a witness.
Asked whether she had ever participated in a group sexual encounter with Jane, Eva answered, “Absolutely not.” She said she did not remember meeting Jane and noted that Eva is a common Northern European name.
No separate charge against Eva resulted from Jane’s testimony. The Maxwell verdict did not decide whether Eva Dubin was the person Jane remembered.
Survivor testimony should not be dismissed merely because a witness cannot provide every surname decades later. It also cannot be converted into a conclusive identification that the witness did not make.
Eva Dubin’s Maxwell Trial Testimony
Eva testified under subpoena on December 17, 2021, during Maxwell’s defense case.
She confirmed:
- She dated Epstein beginning in 1983.
- She traveled on his aircraft.
- She and Glenn remained friendly with him after their marriage.
- Epstein had an uncle like relationship with their children.
- The children called him “Uncle F.”
- She and Glenn were comfortable with his relationship with the children.
She denied:
- Participating in a sexual encounter with Jane.
- Remembering that she had met Jane.
- Seeing Epstein engage in inappropriate conduct with teenage or underage girls.
Under cross examination, Eva acknowledged significant memory problems. She said it was difficult to remember events from long ago and that she sometimes could not remember events from the preceding month.
Her memory testimony is relevant when evaluating both her inability to recall Jane and the certainty of her broader recollections. It is not, by itself, evidence that she lied.
Maxwell was convicted later that month. The Justice Department’s sentencing announcement states that Maxwell helped Epstein recruit, groom, and abuse minor girls. She received a twenty year prison sentence.
Eva was a defense witness, not a defendant. Maxwell’s conviction did not constitute a finding against Eva.
FBI Interview and Investigative Records
An FBI record states that Eva participated in an introductory video meeting with the Southern District of New York case team on January 22, 2021. Her attorney, Tatiana Martins, was present. The record says Eva expressed willingness to cooperate.
The meeting is documented in EFTA00083800 and EFTA00083821.
A prosecution planning document separately listed Glenn among people alleged to have received massages from women connected to Epstein. It identified Rizzo as a former Dubin employee with knowledge concerning alleged underage activity. That record appears in EFTA00098755.
Investigative categorization is not a criminal finding. Planning memoranda may contain allegations, leads, preliminary assessments, and disputed information.
No reviewed record shows that the FBI meeting resulted in criminal charges against Eva.
Virgin Islands Subpoenas
In September 2020, the Government of the United States Virgin Islands sought records from Glenn, Eva, and Highbridge Capital as part of its investigation into Epstein’s estate and entities.
According to ABC News, the subpoenas sought communications and financial transactions involving Epstein, related entities, and associates from 1998 onward. One demand specifically referenced three wire transfers between 2014 and 2016.
The subpoenas were relevant to the broader Virgin Islands litigation concerning Epstein’s alleged trafficking enterprise and financial structure.
A subpoena is a demand for evidence. It is not proof that the recipient committed a crime. No reviewed record establishes that Eva was charged as a result of the subpoenas.
Post Arrest Statements and Denials
After Epstein’s July 2019 federal arrest, a spokesperson for the Dubins said they were horrified by the new allegations.
The statement said that, had they known about the conduct described, they would have cut off all ties and would not have allowed their children to be in Epstein’s presence.
That denial must be included in any fair article. It must also be placed beside the dated record.
By 2009, Eva and Glenn knew:
- Epstein had pleaded guilty.
- His offense involved a minor.
- He was a registered sex offender.
- Their children were minors.
They nevertheless endorsed his access, hosted him, communicated with him, involved him in family life, accepted favors, and maintained medical and charitable connections.
The available evidence does not prove that Eva knew the complete scope of Epstein and Maxwell’s trafficking operation.
It does prove that continued contact was an informed decision made after the known conviction.

2026
Expanded federal releases produced renewed examination of Eva’s emails, Mount Sinai access, charitable activity, family relationship, and the Celina records. Mount Sinai formed a review committee, and congressional investigators cited the Dubins’ post conviction relationship in examining Epstein’s financial access.
What the Evidence Establishes
The reviewed evidence establishes that:
- Eva dated Epstein for years.
- She remained close to him after marrying Glenn.
- The Dubin family traveled repeatedly aboard Epstein controlled aircraft.
- Epstein became an uncle figure to the Dubin children.
- Eva and Glenn knew about Epstein’s conviction and sex offender status by 2009.
- They affirmatively approved his presence around their minor children.
- They hosted him after his release.
- Eva continued corresponding with him for years.
- She invited him to visit while her teenage daughter had friends present.
- She used residences controlled by Epstein to accommodate friends.
- Epstein supported events connected to the Dubin Breast Center.
- Mount Sinai staff discussed crediting his sponsorship as “Uncle F” or “Enhanced Education Fund.”
- Eva proposed a possible “Epstein Floor for Women” in connection with a $5 million project.
- Epstein treated Eva as a source of access to doctors and Mount Sinai.
- Eva continued making introductions involving Epstein after his conviction.
- Federal investigators interviewed Eva and subpoenaed records connected to the Dubins.
- Eva testified for Maxwell’s defense and denied participating in abuse.
What the Evidence Does Not Establish
The reviewed evidence does not establish that:
- Eva was charged with or convicted of an Epstein related crime.
- She knew the full scope of Epstein’s trafficking enterprise.
- She was conclusively identified as the “Eva” described by Jane.
- She participated in the group encounter Jane described.
- Giuffre alleged that she was instructed to perform sexual acts on Eva.
- Eva took the Swedish girl’s passport or threatened her.
- Every passenger on an Epstein aircraft knew about abuse.
- Every woman referred for medical care was a survivor or victim.
- Every housing favor or professional introduction had a criminal purpose.
- Eva knew Celina had been named in an Epstein trust.
- The proposed Epstein named hospital floor was created.
- The Virgin Islands subpoenas produced evidence sufficient for a criminal case against Eva.
Why Eva Dubin Matters
The importance of Eva Dubin’s record does not depend on exaggeration.
Epstein’s continued power rested partly on social permission. A convicted sex offender could still attend family holidays, sit at charitable tables, access elite medicine, provide apartments, receive referrals, make introductions, and be recognized by an affectionate family nickname.
Eva’s relationship with him crossed nearly every one of those boundaries.
She was not simply someone who failed to discover a hidden criminal record. She acknowledged that record in writing and continued the relationship.
That does not answer every question about knowledge. It sharpens the question.
Epstein’s crimes were enabled not only by private secrecy but also by public normalization. His continued acceptance inside the world of a prominent physician, billionaire financier, respected hospital, charitable foundation, and wealthy family helped make him appear safe, useful, and socially rehabilitated.
For survivors, that environment matters. Predators retain access when trusted adults and prestigious institutions treat known warning signs as manageable inconveniences.
The record does not permit EpsteinWiki to invent a conviction that does not exist. It also does not permit the story to be reduced to an unfortunate friendship.
