Jeffrey Epstein’s Japan Connections: Joi Ito, Travel Plans and Business Records

Snapshot
| Field | Documented information |
|---|---|
| Subject | Jeffrey Epstein’s documented Japan connections through Joi Ito, investment vehicles, travel coordinators, corporate contacts and hotel arrangements. |
| Period | Correspondence and financial records from 2012 through 2019, with institutional findings and public responses through 2026. |
| Central finding | The released correspondence documents substantial preparations for Epstein to visit Japan in 2015, followed by an explicit cancellation. Separate records concern investment transactions, Japanese business introductions, travel by Karyna Shuliak and an Andaz Tokyo internship. Each has a different evidentiary endpoint. |
| Evidence limits | An introduction, reservation, proposed meeting or investment does not establish participation in sexual abuse. The business and logistics records cited here do not establish participation in abuse or knowledge of ongoing abuse. Awareness of Epstein’s prior conviction is a separate issue, addressed below. Redacted applicants and companions are not identified here. |
Key Takeaways
- Epstein’s assistant canceled his Japan trip on May 21, 2015. Andaz Tokyo acknowledged the cancellation the next day. Earlier visa papers and hotel reservations cannot establish that he arrived.
- The April visa packet lists three female applicants, including Karyna Shuliak. It is not a list of Epstein and two women. Other correspondence separately describes him as an anticipated traveler.
- The itinerary changed. April paperwork proposed May 22 through 30; a later Andaz booking was changed to May 25 through June 2 before cancellation.
- Four identified Southern Financial payments to Ito or Neoteny in 2014 and 2015 total $2,000,001. Other entries show money moving back. Neither figure establishes personal income or a complete investment return.
- An accountant’s $5,001,000 Ito investment list included Coinbase incorrectly. Epstein corrected that attribution in the same email chain.
- Toshiba International exchanged island energy information with Epstein’s staff and prepared proposals. The cited records do not establish installation or payment.
- Later correspondence supports Shuliak’s presence in Tokyo in February 2017 and a completed Tokyo hotel stay in May 2018. Those records do not place Epstein on either trip.
- The Andaz internship trail extends beyond a December 2018 introduction: March correspondence describes arrangements, and May 2019 staff emails refer to an internship as ongoing. The records do not independently establish completion or a single identity across every redacted chain.
- Oki Matsumoto’s June 2018 meeting has a subsequent acknowledgment and his own 2026 public response. Matsumoto says the conversation was mainly philosophical, there was no later contact, and he regrets the meeting.
What This Record Covers
The Japan material consists of several overlapping relationships rather than one transaction or one trip. Ito connected Epstein’s office to Japanese contacts while managing a separate financial relationship with Epstein entities. Hotel staff, visa coordinators, investment companies and corporate executives appear in different roles. Their names should be read against the particular document in which they occur.
This article concentrates on the Japan-specific record. EpsteinWiki’s Joi Ito profile covers the wider MIT relationship and private investments. Its Tom Pritzker arrangement record examines the broader hospitality correspondence and separate allegations, with the relevant responses.
Source transcriptions are identified by their released EFTA document numbers. A sender’s assertion remains an assertion, even when the email itself is documented. Financial charts require the same care: a bank’s entry can establish a recorded transfer without settling its ultimate purpose or economic beneficiary.
2012 and 2013: Toshiba International’s Island Energy Proposals
The Toshiba correspondence began before the Japan trip preparations. In the chain released as EFTA02361912, Epstein island administrator Jeanne Brennan-Wiebracht exchanges information with Toshiba International personnel from late 2012 into January 2013. The correspondence concerns electricity consumption, utility bills, a schematic and equipment specifications for Little Saint James. It also discusses a possible island visit. One Toshiba reply says the proposed January week was unlikely to work.
The indexed proposal records, EFTA01109946 and EFTA01109967, describe photovoltaic generation and energy storage for the island. They support a commercial proposal process. They do not, by themselves, establish an executed construction contract, completed installation, settled invoice or corporate knowledge of abuse. Toshiba International Corporation should also be distinguished from an assumed direct instruction by Toshiba headquarters in Japan.
Company response: In Shukan Bunshun’s February 11, 2026 reporting, Toshiba said it was checking the facts and would refrain from substantive comment. It is a reported company response, not a finding that the project was completed.
2013: Business Introductions and Proposed Japan Travel
EFTA01957253 records Ito forwarding an introduction between Sony chief executive Kazuo Hirai and Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem in September 2013. Epstein’s receipt of the forward shows that he was kept informed of the introduction. It does not establish an Epstein meeting with Hirai, a Sony investment with Epstein or wrongdoing by Hirai.
Japan travel was discussed more than once. EFTA02723391 and EFTA01756469 include alternative autumn trip plans. EFTA01951916 concerns a proposed Mori-related helicopter charter between Tokyo and Kyoto, including operating hours and alternative arrangements. Planning correspondence should not be converted into a completed flight or an immigration arrival.
On October 25, 2015, EFTA00629606 records Ito discussing MIT-related research and Tokyo urban planning in connection with Mori Building. This helps explain his professional access. It does not establish that Epstein invested in Tokyo real estate.
Kyara, Neoteny and the Financial Relationship
The Kyara name reflected a Japanese cultural reference, but that does not mean the investments were Japanese government financing or money sent to Japan. An indexed excerpt of a January 2014 naming email, EFTA01752601, proposes an incense-related name. The stronger financial evidence is in the entity agreements and bank transaction exhibits.
The September 2014 Kyara Investments III agreement, EFTA00584696, identifies an equity investment in Blockstream as its purpose. Section 5.1 names Joichi Ito as initial manager. Exhibit A lists Southern Financial with a $500,001 contribution and 50 percent membership, and Ito with a $2,000 contribution and 50 percent membership. The agreement treats Ito’s organizational expenses as his initial capital. Epstein’s signature-block title concerns his role for Southern Financial; it should not be used to describe him as Kyara’s co-manager.
The June 2014 Kyara II agreement, EFTA01186455, concerns a convertible-debt investment in Wearality. January 2015 correspondence in EFTA02513454 discusses Kyara IV, OH2 Laboratories and proposed wording to address MIT conflict questions. The enclosing message asks MIT to permit the investment. The proposed disclosure is not itself an approval letter.
These documents establish investment structures and discussions. They do not establish that the underlying technology companies knew about Epstein’s crimes or that the invested money was criminal proceeds.
Four specified outward bank entries
| Date | Recorded recipient | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| July 2, 2014 | Joichi Ito | US$250,000 |
| September 9, 2014 | Joichi Ito; Kyara III / Blockstream reference | US$500,001 |
| March 12, 2015 | Joichi Ito; Kyara IV / OH2 reference | US$250,000 |
| April 13, 2015 | Neoteny 3 LP | US$1,000,000 |
| Total of these four entries | Southern Financial outbound | US$2,000,001 |
The bank exhibit also records a $483,915 Ito-to-Southern Financial payment on August 5, 2015. Page 3 includes a $30,000 Neoteny-to-Southern Financial entry on April 20, 2018, and separate Kyara I returns of $10,000 in December 2016 and $11,392 in September 2018. These are different entities and entries. A complete return calculation would require the underlying account and investment records.
The four-entry subtotal is not a complete investment accounting and should not be described as personal income.
The Coinbase correction
In EFTA02505570, page 1, Richard Kahn’s April 13, 2015 list totals $5,001,000 by including $3,001,000 for Coinbase. Epstein replies that Coinbase is not Ito’s investment, and Kahn acknowledges the correction. Removing Coinbase leaves $2,000,000 in that list. The one-dollar difference from the four bank entries arises because Kahn lists Kyara III at $500,000 while the bank records $500,001. The unrevised $5 million figure should not be attributed to Ito.
April 2015: How the Visa and Business Paperwork Developed
Correspondence among Ito, his assistant Mika Tanaka Nakano and Epstein’s assistant Lesley Groff shows operational preparation, rather than a casual suggestion. The messages discuss a Japanese host business, employer information, occupations and how to describe the purpose of the visit. Loftwork was identified as the Japanese host.
EFTA00349192, pages 1 and 2, lists occupations including model, interior designer and student. In EFTA00349207, Groff says the women are also executive assistants and favors that description for the paperwork. The difference documents how their roles were represented. It does not by itself establish visa fraud, coercion or trafficking.
The April 21 Loftwork packet, EFTA00296396, separates the host invitation from the applicant list. Page 1 names Loftwork cofounder Chiaki Hayashi as guarantor. Page 2 describes an invitation for Epstein to discuss startup collaboration. Page 3 lists three female applicants, including Shuliak. Replacing that list with “Epstein and two women” changes the record.
The correspondence in EFTA00349410 and EFTA00349440 develops a proposed investor and startup rationale. A Southern Trust support letter dated April 30 describes Shuliak’s contemplated work and travel with Epstein. These are representations made for the proposed trip, rather than independent verification of employment or completed business meetings.
The proposed business stops
Page 4 of the Loftwork packet proposes arrival at Narita on May 22, a Loftwork meeting on May 23, Digital Garage on May 24, and later stops involving NHK, Culture Convenience Club / Tsutaya, Kadokawa and Mori Building, before a May 30 departure. The names occur in a planned itinerary. They are not attendance records or evidence that each company accepted an appointment.
In EFTA00666357, Ito also offers an introduction for a Narita helicopter service he associated with Mori Building. That offer does not establish a flight.
May 2015: Changed Reservations, Then Cancellation
An April 14, 2015 email exchange records Epstein’s assistant seeking hotel advice through Joi Ito’s office for the proposed Japan visit. Mika Tanaka Nakano explained that Ito had switched from Grand Hyatt Tokyo to Andaz Tokyo and recommended Andaz. This contemporaneous correspondence documents planning and hotel recommendations, not a completed visit by Epstein.
The visa itinerary and the later hotel booking are different versions of the plans. EFTA02303247, pages 1 and 3, records Andaz Tokyo confirming a change to May 25 through June 2. The chain includes American Express coordination and a request for connected rooms. It establishes a reservation in Epstein’s name, not an occupied room.
The endpoint is explicit. In EFTA02078571, page 1, Groff tells the hotel on May 21 that Epstein’s Japan trip has been canceled and that the American Express hotel reservations have been canceled. EFTA02078201, page 1, contains Andaz’s acknowledgment the next day.
The records therefore support a canceled May 2015 trip. They cannot establish Epstein’s arrival from the earlier visa paperwork. Equally, cancellation of this itinerary does not prove that he never visited Japan at another time.
Shinzo Abe’s MIT Visit Was a Separate Event
MIT’s contemporaneous April 27, 2015 report confirms that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited MIT, attended an innovation discussion and toured Media Lab projects with Ito. It is an independently documented public event.
The report does not establish a meeting between Abe and Epstein, Japanese government involvement in Epstein’s itinerary, or official approval of his business interests. An Ito correspondence reference to Abe, or the timing of the campus visit, cannot establish those additional propositions.
2016 and 2017: Shuliak’s Tokyo and Kyoto Travel
The later travel records concern other travelers. In EFTA00819177, Epstein tells Thomas Pritzker that Shuliak and a companion are going to Tokyo and that Ito is organizing Kyoto. Pritzker recommends Grand Hyatt. EFTA00319252 records Ito offering help from his wife Mizuka with trip planning. EFTA00319361 preserves proposed flight and Tokyo/Kyoto dates. These are not evidence that Epstein accompanied them.
The next series concerns a longer 2017 stay and hospitality-related instruction. EFTA00565743 is a December 2016 planning chain with TOKI’s Romy Yamada about February experiences such as tea, food service, flower arranging and meditation. EFTA02325277 contains a January hotel confirmation for February 3 through 25. Earlier activity-planning dates and hotel dates should not be assumed identical.
There is evidence beyond reservations. On February 8, Shuliak tells Ito that she has already experienced part of the program and thanks him for the TOKI introduction. That is a message during the visit, not a post-trip account. On February 18, Yamada thanks her for a sushi outing and refers to her weekend in Tokyo. These exchanges support actual presence and some completed activities, while leaving the attendance and cost of every planned lesson unresolved. EFTA00571509; EFTA00570948.
Neither cultural instruction nor accommodation proves exploitation. Redacted companions should not be identified by combining inconsistent copies of records, and women mentioned in these arrangements should not automatically be labeled survivors or participants in criminal conduct.
2018: Another Tokyo Stay and the Importance of Reading the Continuation
The April 2018 correspondence again involves Pritzker’s assistance for Shuliak. The full exchange in EFTA02305821 contains her remark about finding Epstein a girlfriend, Pritzker’s reply, and her subsequent statement that she was joking, followed by an explanation about a resort visit and architectural research. Reporting the first remark without its continuation changes the account. The chain identifies no recruited person or completed introduction.
The initial Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo schedule also changed. EFTA00542386, pages 1 and 2, records Kuala Lumpur’s cancellation and Tokyo’s revised May 4 through 7 dates. American Express had arranged Grand Hyatt and airport transfers. Older dates remain in quoted correspondence and should not be treated as the final plan.
Shuliak’s May 6 thanks to Pritzker describes the welcome and room while she was in Tokyo. The hotel’s May 8 followup refers to her May 4 stay. Together, they support a completed Tokyo visit, while establishing neither a recruitment purpose nor Epstein’s presence.
Pritzker’s response: In a February 16, 2026 statement, he expressed regret for maintaining contact with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, condemned their actions and acknowledged poor judgment. That response addresses the association generally; it does not establish the purpose of every hotel arrangement.
2018 and 2019: The Andaz Internship Trail
In EFTA02610316, Epstein asks Ito in December 2018 for help securing a Japan hotel internship for a student described as a friend’s daughter. Ito offers an Andaz connection. The subsequent EFTA02608998 exchange includes discussion of how to describe the connection to the applicant.
EFTA02609014 contains the next step. Ito’s December 24 approach to Mori Building executive Masahiko Ogasawara describes the applicant as a friend’s daughter. Ogasawara’s December 25 reply indicates arrangements for accepting an intern at Andaz and asks whether a hotel representative can contact her directly. Ito agrees and forwards the chain to Epstein on December 26. This is a documented introduction and acceptance-related arrangement.
The record continues in 2019. In EFTA00491892, pages 1 and 2, a redacted correspondent discusses travel and an internship obtained through Epstein’s networking. She asks that his name not appear on a hotel booking. The reply discusses payment and reimbursement; the correspondent subsequently says she has booked in her own name. This correspondence does not show that hotel staff received or participated in that request.
On May 22, Groff’s booking request in EFTA02286859 describes Andaz as the hotel where a redacted person has an internship. EFTA02286870 contains Epstein’s response about the room cost, with Groff’s wording quoted beneath it. The internship statement should be attributed to Groff’s message rather than presented as a separate claim authored by Epstein.
These contemporary references strengthen the evidence beyond a proposal alone. They still do not independently establish the internship’s exact start, duration, completion or payroll status. Redactions also prevent a conclusive identification of the same applicant across every chain.
Company response: Tokyo Reporter’s February 2026 account says Mori Building told Shukan Bunshun that it had no relationship with Epstein and had granted no special favors. That reported denial belongs alongside the correspondence. The emails document the introductions and messages; they do not establish what every company representative knew about Epstein’s involvement. Reported response.
2018: Oki Matsumoto’s New York Meeting
The Matsumoto record has both an introduction and an endpoint. EFTA02657518 contains Ito’s May 2018 introduction of Matsumoto to Epstein. EFTA00941029 records June 25 scheduling for a June 27 New York meeting. EFTA00846415 contains Matsumoto’s June 29 acknowledgment after the meeting. Unlike an unfulfilled invitation, the subsequent acknowledgment supports that an encounter occurred.
Matsumoto’s response: In a February 20, 2026 statement on Monex’s official media site, he confirms meeting Epstein in New York after a friend’s introduction. He says their conversation was largely about philosophy, including Montaigne and Seneca; that he had no subsequent contact; and that he regrets having met him while denying impropriety. He also says his pre-meeting search had revealed Epstein’s 2008 prison sentence. These are Matsumoto’s account and response, not independent confirmation of every aspect of the conversation.
The records reviewed here do not establish a Monex payment to Epstein, a Japanese government loan request or criminal activity arising from this meeting.
MIT’s Findings and Ito’s Response
The Goodwin Procter report commissioned by MIT, released in January 2020, found ten Epstein gifts totaling $850,000 from 2002 through 2017. Nine post-conviction gifts totaled $750,000, including $525,000 to the Media Lab. Those university gifts are separate from Ito-related private investments.
The report documented Ito’s early awareness of Epstein’s criminal history, senior administrators’ approval of donations under conditions, and serious failures of judgment. Its remit focused on MIT donations, knowledge and campus visits. It was not a comprehensive investigation of every later-released Japan record.
In his March 3, 2026 statement, Ito denied witnessing or becoming aware of evidence of the horrific conduct that later came to light. He emphasized senior MIT approval and characterized the independent report as finding no legal or policy violation by him. The report’s explicit no-law-or-policy-breach passage addresses three senior administrators’ decision to accept donations. It is not a blanket adjudication of Ito’s conduct or all his dealings.
Ito also announced that he would not seek reappointment to the Global Startup Campus advisory role and planned to leave the Digital Society advisory role on March 31. Chiba Institute of Technology’s February 28 statement said its confidence in him remained unchanged after its review. Announced role changes and institutional support are not criminal findings.

What Remains Unresolved
- Whether any separate Epstein Japan itinerary resulted in travel. The canceled May 2015 visit cannot settle all other years.
- Whether the Toshiba proposal became a signed, paid or completed project.
- Whether any organization named in the proposed 2015 business itinerary accepted or attended a meeting.
- The complete capital-account and distribution history for the Kyara and Neoteny investments.
- The Andaz internship’s full administrative record and whether the redacted chains concern the same person.
- Final settled costs and payment records for each hotel and travel arrangement.
- A reliable primary record identifying a Japanese government official who asked Epstein to arrange a United States loan. No such record is established by the material cited in this article.
These gaps should remain open questions. Search-result counts, repeated email copies and names on itineraries do not supply the missing proof.

Sources and Scope
This is a targeted documentary review, not a census of the complete Epstein release. It uses released-record transcriptions, available PDF text, MIT’s original report and institutional reporting, and attributed public responses. The original article relied on released-record transcriptions and available PDF text. A follow-up audit on October 15, 2026 visually checked mirrored EFTA page images for EFTA00080250 (pages 2, 3 and 10), EFTA00296396 (pages 1, 3 and 4), EFTA02078571 (page 1), EFTA02078201 (page 1) and EFTA02505570 (page 1). Other EFTA records retain the review limits stated in the document register. MIT’s original report was read, and its donation table was checked visually. Quotations, signatures and damaged table text should be checked against page images when those details are decisive.
