Jack Lang and Jeffrey Epstein

Jack Lang

Snapshot

Jack Mathieu Émile Lang is a French politician, lawyer, educator, and cultural administrator who served as minister of culture and minister of national education. He was president of the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris from 2013 until February 2026.

Released records document sustained contact between Lang, members of his family, and Jeffrey Epstein from at least 2012 through 2019.

The material includes direct emails, scheduled meetings, social invitations, political discussions, private aircraft arrangements, requests involving vehicles, a proposed property transaction in Morocco, payments to a French nonprofit, an educational proposal called Petit Prince, and records connected with an art investment company created by Epstein and Lang’s daughter Caroline.

Lang said that Woody Allen introduced him to Epstein and that he regarded Epstein as a wealthy patron interested in art, cinema, and culture. He denied knowing about Epstein’s sexual crimes when they associated.

The documents demonstrate substantially more than an incidental appearance in an address book. Epstein described Lang as a friend and French cultural icon, repeatedly placed him on lists of people to meet in Paris, provided transportation to members of the Lang family, and cultivated relationships with both Jack and Caroline Lang.

The presently available record does not establish that Jack Lang participated in Epstein’s sexual abuse or trafficking operation.

In February 2026, France’s National Financial Prosecutor opened a preliminary investigation involving Jack Lang and Caroline Lang on suspicion of laundering aggravated tax fraud. Investigators subsequently searched the Institut du Monde Arabe and other locations.

Lang resigned from the institute on February 7, 2026. As of September 1, 2026, the publicly identified investigation had not produced a criminal conviction or publicly reported final judgment against him.

Political and Cultural Career

Lang was born in Mirecourt, France, on September 2, 1939.

He studied political science and public law before becoming a university teacher and theater administrator. His early cultural work included leadership of the Nancy University Theatre and the Théâtre national de Chaillot.

Lang became one of the most recognizable cultural figures associated with President François Mitterrand’s Socialist governments.

He served as minister of culture from 1981 until 1986 and again from 1988 until 1993. He also served as minister of national education during the early 1990s and from 2000 until 2002.

His political career included service in the National Assembly, the European Parliament, and as mayor of Blois. The French National Assembly’s historical records document his parliamentary service and government responsibilities.

Lang is closely associated with the creation of the Fête de la Musique and with major French cultural policies involving museums, theater, architecture, books, and public access to the arts.

His cultural reputation made him a potentially valuable contact for Epstein, who regularly cultivated politicians, artists, academics, museum figures, filmmakers, and wealthy collectors.

The Institut du Monde Arabe

Lang became president of the Institut du Monde Arabe in 2013.

The Paris institution was created through cooperation between France and Arab states. It operates exhibitions, educational programs, a museum, a cinema, a library, and cultural events intended to improve understanding of the Arab world.

Lang remained its president for four terms. His tenure included major exhibitions, efforts to expand the museum’s art holdings, and plans for a broader museum renovation.

The Epstein records cover much of the same period.

Documents show Lang communicating with Epstein directly and through family members while holding a prominent position at an institution subject to French government oversight. The records do not establish that the Institut du Monde Arabe approved, supervised, or knew the full extent of those communications.

Epstein sometimes represented Lang to other contacts as a person who worked with or for his foundation in Paris. That description appeared in Epstein’s communications, but it was not necessarily an official description adopted by Lang or the institute.

How Lang Said He Met Epstein

Lang said that filmmaker Woody Allen introduced him to Epstein approximately fifteen years before the 2026 controversy.

In his public accounts, Lang described Epstein as a person interested in art, culture, and cinema. He said that he did not know about Epstein’s 2008 Florida conviction when they first met.

The timing matters. Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to offenses involving solicitation of prostitution, including solicitation involving a minor. His conviction and sex offender status were publicly reported before the documented Lang correspondence began.

Lang’s statement establishes his account of what he personally knew. It does not establish that the conviction was secret or unavailable to anyone who conducted a basic review of Epstein’s history.

Caroline Lang gave a different and more detailed account of her own knowledge. She told Mediapart that Epstein once advised her to search for information about him online. She said she found reporting about the Florida case but accepted his claim that he had paid his debt and compensated victims.

That statement concerns Caroline Lang’s knowledge. It does not by itself prove what or when Jack Lang knew.

The Documented Relationship

The Epstein archive contains direct correspondence involving Lang over several years.

In EFTA00646607, Lang thanked Epstein in December 2012 for what he called a generous invitation and invited him to attend West Side Story.

The tone indicates a friendly social relationship rather than a purely formal encounter.

Epstein’s schedules repeatedly placed Lang among the people he intended to contact or see in Paris. EFTA00284910 identifies Jack Lang and Caroline Lang on a February 2014 Paris contact list, alongside other European political, business, and social figures.

A later reminder, EFTA00285747, asked in January 2019 whether Epstein’s staff should contact Lang and several other people before a Paris visit.

These records establish recurring attention and planned contact. A reminder or calendar entry does not conclusively prove that every proposed meeting occurred.

Direct messages, completed travel arrangements, and references to previous encounters provide stronger evidence that at least some of the relationship was carried out in person.

Epstein’s Descriptions of Lang

Epstein sometimes called Lang a friend, an icon, or a useful cultural contact.

In March 2019, an exchange preserved as EFTA01615663 shows Epstein inviting Steve Bannon to Paris and proposing lunch with “Jacques Lang,” whom Epstein described as a former culture minister, an adviser to Emmanuel Macron, and a great friend.

The spelling “Jacques” appears repeatedly in Epstein’s records and generally refers to Jack Lang.

Epstein’s description proves how he presented Lang to Bannon. It does not establish that Lang formally served as Macron’s adviser in the capacity Epstein implied or that a meeting with Bannon occurred.

Epstein also described himself to Caroline Lang as part of the Lang family. That language demonstrates Epstein’s claimed sense of personal closeness, although members of the family could have understood the relationship differently.

Political Discussions

The correspondence was not limited to cultural events.

In EFTA00648559, Epstein discussed political pressure on Donald Trump’s family in July 2017. Lang responded that Epstein had been correct.

The exchange establishes that Lang and Epstein discussed United States politics and that Lang treated Epstein’s political predictions seriously.

Other correspondence concerned French elections, Marine Le Pen, international political figures, and people whom Epstein hoped to introduce across national networks.

Political discussion does not establish criminal participation. It does show that the relationship extended beyond occasional conversations about museums or films.

The Petit Prince Project

One of the most sensitive exchanges concerned a proposal called Petit Prince.

A January 2013 thread preserved in EFTA01904159 shows Epstein commenting on material associated with the project. His questions included whether children should be introduced to religion and “new sexualities,” how frequently they should be tested, and whether standardized tests or sample projects should be used.

Caroline Lang replied that her father agreed with Epstein’s suggestion to add religion and new sexuality to the proposal. She said that it would be easier for Lang to discuss the matter with Epstein in person during a future Paris visit.

The phrase “new sexualities” has generated substantial public concern because Epstein was already a convicted sex offender and the exchange expressly concerned children.

The messages require precise treatment.

They establish that Epstein used the phrase while commenting on a project involving children and that Caroline represented her father as agreeing with additions to the proposal. They do not explain what “new sexualities” meant, identify any participating children, describe sexual activity, or prove that a program was implemented.

Lang later said that he could not remember the project clearly.

The exchange warrants investigation because of Epstein’s history and the unusual wording. It should not be transformed, without additional evidence, into a finding that Lang and Epstein conducted sexual experiments on children.

Caroline Lang’s Role

Caroline Lang worked for many years in the film and television industry, including a senior position with Warner Bros in France.

The released archive shows that she became one of the principal intermediaries between Epstein and her father.

She arranged meetings, forwarded messages, discussed cultural projects, conveyed information about Lang’s political and personal circumstances, and participated in travel and social planning.

In EFTA02103354, Caroline arranged a proposed June 2014 meeting between Epstein and former International Monetary Fund managing director Dominique Strauss Kahn at the Royal Monceau hotel in Paris.

That email establishes that Caroline acted as a network intermediary. It does not establish what was discussed or whether Jack Lang participated in that particular meeting.

Caroline also travelled to Epstein’s Palm Beach residence with family members. A 2014 schedule preserved in EFTA00284890 records plans for her arrival in Miami with two girls identified as ages fifteen and thirteen and transportation to Epstein’s Palm Beach house.

The schedule documents planned family travel. It does not establish abuse or inappropriate conduct toward the girls.

The Association des Cultures du Monde Payments

Financial records show that Epstein directed payments to the Association des Cultures du Monde, also identified as ADCM.

In December 2012, Epstein financial manager Richard Kahn told Caroline Lang that he was sending another €50,000 at Epstein’s direction. The exchange is preserved in EFTA00398778.

Caroline responded that the money had been sent to the nonprofit ADCM rather than to her father’s personal account. She argued that no formal agreement between Jack Lang and Epstein was required.

The use of the word “another” suggests that the payment was not necessarily the first transfer.

Epstein lawyer Darren Indyke appeared concerned about the absence of a formal agreement. A related reminder in EFTA00394587 instructed Epstein to meet Lang in Paris about Caroline’s statement that no agreement was required.

The records establish that Epstein transferred or directed substantial funds to an organization connected with the Lang circle and that his legal and financial staff sought clarification.

They do not establish that the funds entered Jack Lang’s personal account or were diverted for personal use.

The 2018 Film Donation

In 2018, a foundation associated with Epstein paid $57,897 to a French nonprofit established by people connected with Lang.

When the payment became public in 2020, Lang said that it was intended to finance a documentary film.

The proposed production was reportedly titled Jack Lang, la traversée du siècle, or Jack Lang: A Journey Through the Century. The film was intended to examine Lang’s life and career but was not ultimately broadcast.

The Politico account of the donation reported that the nonprofit’s officers included associates or employees connected with Lang.

The payment demonstrates that Epstein supplied money to a project centered on Lang’s public life.

It does not establish that Lang personally received the entire sum, that the payment was illegal, or that the documentary was a disguise for unrelated activity. Questions remain about the production work completed, the nonprofit’s operations, and the final use of the money.

Prytanee LLC

The most consequential financial records concern Prytanee LLC, an art investment company formed in the United States Virgin Islands in July 2016.

Deutsche Bank records preserved in EFTA00167059 and EFTA00168930 identify the ownership structure and proposed business purpose.

Southern Trust Company, an Epstein entity, held fifty percent of the company. The Pierre Trust, associated with Caroline Lang, held the other fifty percent.

The stated purpose was to invest in works by emerging artists. Epstein would provide capital, while Caroline was expected to provide knowledge of artists and the art market.

The records identified Jeffrey Epstein, Darren Indyke, Caroline Lang, and French manager Étienne Binant as people with authority or responsibilities connected with the company.

Deutsche Bank treated Caroline as a politically exposed person because of her father’s government service. The bank records also identified risk considerations associated with Epstein’s financial institutions.

A later balance sheet, EFTA01415196, lists Prytanee among Epstein related entities and records a balance of approximately $197,000 in July 2018.

Other evidence reviewed by Mediapart indicated that the company at one point held approximately $1.4 million supplied by Epstein.

Jack Lang’s Connection to Prytanee

Jack Lang was not publicly identified as a fifty percent owner of Prytanee. The documented ownership interest attributed to the Lang side belonged to the Pierre Trust associated with Caroline.

His name nevertheless appeared in records connected with the company.

An early message, EFTA00325458, refers to the proposed venture as the “jacques project.” Epstein used that phrase while contacting Étienne Binant about a project Caroline had suggested they discuss.

A manager later said that he had secured the support of the Lang family for the company and its documents.

Mediapart reported that Prytanee’s governing documents contained a provision connected with the deaths of Epstein, Caroline Lang, and “Jacques” Lang. Jack Lang and Caroline both said they had not known that he was named in the documents.

Other messages show Jack Lang offering opinions about artworks being considered. Caroline wrote in May 2018 that her father wanted to cancel a meeting because he had seen the paintings and found them uninteresting.

The evidence supports the conclusion that Lang was aware of at least some artistic activity involving Epstein and Caroline. It does not by itself establish that he understood the complete corporate structure, owned shares, controlled the bank account, or received distributions.

Epstein’s Proposed Will

Epstein signed documents concerning the disposition of his fortune shortly before his death in August 2019.

Caroline Lang was identified in released material as a proposed beneficiary of $5 million.

She said that she did not know she had been named and did not receive the money.

The proposed gift is significant evidence of the importance Epstein assigned to their relationship. It does not prove that Caroline requested the gift, knew about it, or ultimately obtained it.

Jack Lang was not publicly identified as the intended recipient of that particular $5 million provision.

Researchers should distinguish Epstein’s proposed testamentary intentions from completed transfers. A name in a will or trust schedule does not establish that the named person accepted or received an inheritance.

The Morocco Riad Proposal

Jack Lang and Epstein also communicated directly about a property in Morocco.

In March 2015, Lang and his wife Monique presented Epstein with the possibility of purchasing Ksar Massa, a riad connected with an acquaintance of theirs.

Epstein asked about the price. Lang replied that the requested price was €5.4 million and used the term “off shore.”

Lang later said that he did not remember the exchange clearly and believed he had simply transmitted the seller’s expectations.

The messages establish that Lang communicated a proposed price and offshore structure to Epstein.

They do not establish that Epstein purchased the property, that Lang owned it, that Lang received a commission, or that the proposal violated French or Moroccan law.

The exchange became relevant to the French financial investigation because it appeared alongside the Prytanee records and other possible financial benefits involving the Lang family.

Private Aircraft Travel

The archive contains evidence that members of the Lang family travelled on Epstein’s aircraft.

Records including EFTA00661646 and EFTA00683349 concern passport information and arrangements for Jack Lang, Monique Lang, and a granddaughter during an April 2017 flight.

The associated schedule in EFTA00285309 records an intended departure from Paris Le Bourget for Marrakech aboard Epstein’s Gulfstream aircraft. It identifies Jacques and Monique Lang among the passengers.

These records provide stronger evidence than an informal invitation because they include passport and operational planning material.

They establish that the flight was arranged and recorded in Epstein’s schedule. The presently cited records do not establish the purpose of every passenger’s trip or that criminal conduct occurred during the journey.

The use of a private aircraft supplied by Epstein nevertheless represented a substantial benefit.

Vehicles and Other Favors

Reporting based on the released archive indicates that Epstein also made vehicles or drivers available to Lang and members of his family.

These arrangements fit a wider pattern in Epstein’s network. He frequently used homes, aircraft, cars, staff, meals, and exclusive introductions to cultivate relationships with influential people.

A request for or acceptance of transportation is not inherently illegal.

Its evidentiary significance lies in the frequency and value of the favors, particularly when Lang later described Epstein as merely an acquaintance.

The records support a relationship involving hospitality and material benefits rather than only occasional professional correspondence.

Paris, Avignon, and Morocco

Lang and Epstein communicated about meetings in several locations.

Paris was the center of the relationship. Epstein maintained a residence on Avenue Foch and regularly instructed assistants to arrange meetings with French political, cultural, and business figures.

The records also contain references to Avignon and Morocco, as well as travel between Paris and Marrakech.

Epstein’s European scheduling infrastructure included assistants, drivers, aircraft personnel, and contacts capable of arranging private meetings with little notice.

Lang’s repeated presence in these records demonstrates that he became part of Epstein’s established Paris network.

A geographic reference does not establish that every planned event occurred. Completed travel records, direct thanks after meetings, and messages referring to earlier conversations provide more reliable confirmation.

Contact Close to Epstein’s 2019 Arrest

The relationship continued close to Epstein’s final arrest.

EFTA00285747 placed Lang among people Epstein’s staff considered contacting in Paris in January 2019.

In March 2019, Epstein proposed introducing Steve Bannon to Lang in Paris in EFTA01615663.

Other records show Caroline Lang remaining in contact with Epstein in 2019. EFTA00285790 records plans for an Epstein driver to collect her from John F. Kennedy International Airport and take her to 301 East 66th Street in New York in May 2019.

Epstein was arrested in July 2019.

The timing establishes that the Lang family relationship did not end soon after Epstein’s 2008 conviction. It continued through the years when Epstein was rebuilding his international network as a registered sex offender.

Lang’s Public Responses

Lang initially acknowledged knowing Epstein but resisted descriptions of the relationship as a close friendship.

He said Epstein had been courteous, generous, and interested in cultural subjects. He maintained that he had been shocked when the full scale of Epstein’s crimes became public.

Lang also said that he did not regret having known Epstein and objected to rewriting every past encounter solely through knowledge acquired later.

The documents complicated that account because they revealed repeated personal communications, benefits, direct political discussion, family travel, financial support for a film project, and extensive interaction between Epstein and Caroline Lang.

The contradiction is partly one of classification. Lang may have understood “friend” more narrowly than Epstein did. The archive nevertheless establishes a recurring relationship that extended considerably beyond a single dinner or cultural introduction.

The January 2026 Document Release

The United States Department of Justice released millions of additional Epstein related pages in January 2026.

Those records greatly expanded public understanding of the Lang relationship. Earlier reporting had already identified the film payment and social contacts, but the new material exposed Prytanee, aircraft arrangements, political exchanges, the proposed will, and the volume of family correspondence.

News organizations reported that Jack Lang’s name appeared more than six hundred times in the released files.

Mention counts must be interpreted carefully. A single email chain can repeat a name across several pages, attachments, indexes, and copies.

The importance of the Lang material does not depend solely on the count. Its significance comes from the combination of direct correspondence, financial records, company documents, travel arrangements, and evidence continuing into 2019.

Caroline Lang’s Resignations

The disclosures produced immediate professional consequences for Caroline Lang.

She resigned from her position with the Syndicat des producteurs indépendants and left several other professional or charitable responsibilities.

Her resignations did not constitute admissions of criminal conduct.

She acknowledged serious carelessness concerning Prytanee and said she had failed to understand the tax implications of the offshore structure. She maintained that Epstein supplied all the capital and that she did not receive personal profits from the company.

She also said she requested liquidation of Prytanee after Epstein’s death and did not want to receive company assets.

Those statements form part of her defense and require comparison with the underlying bank, corporate, and tax records.

The French Financial Investigation

On February 6, 2026, France’s National Financial Prosecutor opened a preliminary investigation involving Jack Lang and Caroline Lang.

The publicly reported suspected offense was laundering aggravated tax fraud.

A preliminary investigation allows prosecutors and investigators to collect documents, examine financial flows, question witnesses, and determine whether sufficient evidence exists for further proceedings.

It is not a criminal conviction and does not establish guilt.

The investigation followed Mediapart’s reporting on Prytanee, the undeclared United States Virgin Islands structure, references to Jack Lang in company documents, the Morocco transaction, and other financial connections.

Both Jack and Caroline Lang denied wrongdoing. Their lawyer stated that no relevant funds had moved to Jack Lang.

Searches of the Institut du Monde Arabe

On February 16, 2026, French investigators searched the Institut du Monde Arabe and other locations.

The Reuters report on the searches states that the operation was conducted as part of the financial investigation involving Lang and his daughter.

A search establishes that investigators obtained legal authority to seek evidence at a location. It does not prove that incriminating evidence was found.

The institute said it could not immediately comment on the operation.

Because Lang had already resigned, the search concerned records created or maintained during his presidency rather than an ongoing role.

The public record available as of September 1, 2026, did not establish the complete inventory of material seized or the investigators’ final conclusions.

Resignation from the Institut du Monde Arabe

Lang initially said that he had no reason to resign.

Political pressure increased after the financial investigation became public. The French government summoned him to explain his Epstein relationship and raised concerns about protecting the reputation of the Institut du Monde Arabe.

On February 7, 2026, Lang submitted his resignation.

In his resignation statement, he criticized what he described as unfounded suspicion and personal attacks. He said that he was leaving to protect the institute and to defend himself against the allegations.

The French Foreign Ministry accepted the resignation and began the process of selecting a successor.

Lang’s resignation was a political and institutional consequence. It was not a judicial determination that he had committed tax fraud, money laundering, trafficking, or sexual abuse.

Evidence Concerning Sexual Crimes

The released messages reviewed for this article do not establish that Lang participated in Epstein’s trafficking operation or sexually abused anyone.

Mediapart reported that the messages it reviewed did not implicate Jack or Caroline Lang in Epstein’s sexual crimes.

The Petit Prince correspondence is disturbing because Epstein discussed children and “new sexualities.” However, the presently available text does not establish what the project ultimately involved or whether it was implemented.

The presence of teenage family members in a Palm Beach travel schedule also requires careful treatment. The schedule proves planned presence at an Epstein property. It does not, without witness testimony or other evidence, prove that abuse occurred.

The financial investigation opened in 2026 concerned suspected tax and laundering offenses rather than a publicly identified accusation that Lang participated in Epstein’s sex trafficking.

These distinctions should be maintained unless additional primary evidence or judicial findings emerge.

Investigative Assessment

Jack Lang was not merely a public figure whose name appeared once in an Epstein contact book.

The documentary pattern shows recurring direct contact, family involvement, political discussions, cultural projects, hospitality, private travel, financial support, and an art investment structure involving his daughter.

Epstein appears to have valued Lang for his cultural prestige, political experience, international relationships, and access to French institutions. Lang and his family received access to Epstein’s money, homes, aircraft, vehicles, staff, and social network.

The strongest financial questions concern the ADCM payments, the documentary donation, Prytanee, and the proposed Morocco transaction. Those matters require bank records, corporate documents, tax filings, contracts, and witness testimony rather than conclusions based solely on emails.

The Petit Prince exchange requires continued scrutiny. Its wording is significant, but the surviving messages do not provide enough context to determine the project’s actual purpose or implementation.

Lang’s claim that he did not know about Epstein’s history should be distinguished from the objective fact that Epstein’s 2008 conviction was public before their documented relationship developed.

The most defensible classification is that Lang was a recurring post conviction Epstein associate whose family had documented financial and logistical ties to Epstein. The evidence justified further financial investigation and institutional scrutiny, but it did not by itself establish participation in Epstein’s sexual crimes.
