Len Blavatnik

Sir Leonard Valentinovich Blavatnik, widely known as Len Blavatnik, is a Soviet born American and British billionaire, the founder of Access Industries, and a major investor in music, media, chemicals, technology, and sport. His name appears repeatedly in records released from the Jeffrey Epstein investigations. The records document at least one direct email exchange with Epstein’s office, an invitation to a 2010 dinner for Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak, several social and business references by Epstein and his associates, and multiple attempts by people in Epstein’s circle to use Blavatnik as a prospective contact, employer, or investor.
The public record does not establish that Blavatnik participated in Epstein’s sexual abuse or trafficking operation. It also does not establish that every suggested meeting, introduction, or investment occurred. A separate set of records contains serious allegations by Guzel Ganieva concerning Blavatnik in the context of her dispute with Leon Black. Those claims must be presented as allegations recorded in calls and an FBI interview, not as adjudicated facts.

Key Takeaways
- Epstein described Blavatnik to Peter Mandelson in 2010 as someone he knew well. This is Epstein’s own characterization and is not independent proof of the depth of the relationship.
- Blavatnik directly replied to an invitation from Epstein’s assistant Lesley Groff for a September 2010 dinner with Ehud Barak at Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse. He declined because he was in London and asked Groff to convey his greetings to Epstein.
- Peggy Siegal discussed Blavatnik with Epstein in 2009 and reported attending events and a lunch on Blavatnik’s yacht during the Cannes Film Festival.
- Epstein asked Siegal to approach Blavatnik about employment for a Russian woman while omitting Epstein’s name. The released exchange does not show that Blavatnik received the request or acted on it.
- Epstein and people around him repeatedly presented Blavatnik as a possible contact for jobs, capital, introductions, entertainment access, and technology investments.
- Several documents are planning materials or suggestions. They do not prove that meetings, introductions, or investments were completed.
- No verified payment between Epstein and Blavatnik, no established joint business venture, and no verified flight by Blavatnik on Epstein’s aircraft were located in the reviewed public material.
- Records connected to Guzel Ganieva contain serious claims involving Blavatnik. They are allegations preserved in an FBI interview and recorded calls. No criminal charge or civil judgment against Blavatnik arising from those claims was located.
- Nothing in the reviewed records establishes that Blavatnik participated in Epstein’s sexual abuse or trafficking.
Biography and Professional Background
Blavatnik was born in Odesa and grew up in the Soviet Union. He studied at the Moscow Institute of Transport Engineers, where Viktor Vekselberg was a fellow student, but emigrated before completing his degree. After moving to the United States in the late 1970s, he earned a master’s degree in computer science from Columbia University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
He founded Access Industries in New York in 1986. During the privatization of former Soviet state assets in the 1990s, Blavatnik and business partners including Vekselberg built interests in oil and aluminum. Their holdings became associated with major companies including TNK, SUAL, and Rusal. Blavatnik later participated in AAR, the consortium that held half of TNK-BP with BP. Rosneft acquired the AAR stake in TNK-BP in 2013 as part of a transaction that made Blavatnik and his partners billions of dollars.
Access Industries subsequently expanded well beyond the former Soviet Union. It acquired Warner Music Group in 2011, became a major investor in LyondellBasell, and backed companies across media, telecommunications, biotechnology, venture capital, and sports streaming. Access owns DAZN, a global sports media service. Blavatnik’s wealth, control of cultural assets, and international network have made him an important figure in business, entertainment, higher education, and philanthropy.
The Blavatnik Family Foundation has funded scientific research, universities, museums, cultural institutions, and medical programs. Major beneficiaries have included Oxford University, Harvard Medical School, Yale University, the Courtauld Institute, Tate, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Foundation says that, by 2026, it had provided more than $1.5 billion to over 250 institutions. The Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists began in 2007.
Blavatnik’s philanthropy has also generated scrutiny. Critics have questioned whether universities and cultural institutions performed sufficient due diligence concerning the origins of his fortune and former business relationships in Russia. Supporters point to his long residence and business base in the West, his extensive giving, and his support for Ukraine. Blavatnik has rejected descriptions of himself as a Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin. Ukraine reportedly placed him under sanctions in December 2023. That geopolitical controversy is separate from the Epstein record and should not be used as evidence of Epstein related wrongdoing.
Connection to Jeffrey Epstein
The available records support describing Blavatnik as an acquaintance and elite network contact of Epstein, not as a proven participant in Epstein’s criminal enterprise. The relationship appears across several overlapping social worlds:
- New York finance and philanthropy
- Film, music, and entertainment events
- Cannes social activity and yacht hospitality
- Israeli political and security technology circles
- Prospective introductions to investors and billionaires
- Requests for employment or access routed through intermediaries
The strongest direct evidence is a September 2010 invitation sent by Lesley Groff on Epstein’s behalf. Blavatnik responded that he was in London, declined the dinner, and asked Groff to say hello to Epstein. Other records are often one step removed. They show Epstein discussing Blavatnik with Peggy Siegal, Peter Mandelson, Larry Summers, Nicole Junkermann, Bill Gates, Maria Drokova, and others.
The records also show Epstein trading on the perceived value of Blavatnik’s name. He cited Blavatnik as someone who might hire a Russian woman, someone Bill Gates might want to know, and a possible investor for a Russian technology founder. That pattern establishes that Epstein regarded Blavatnik as a valuable node in an elite network. It does not establish that Blavatnik authorized Epstein to use his name or acted on every proposal.
Documented Communications and Meetings
April 2009: Peggy Siegal discussion
After a Film Society tribute to Tom Hanks, publicist Peggy Siegal told Epstein that she had sat beside Blavatnik and might help him during the Cannes Film Festival. Epstein described Blavatnik as intelligent and told Siegal she could use Epstein’s name, while also expressing distrust of him. The exchange shows that Epstein believed a reference to him would be meaningful in approaching Blavatnik. It does not disclose how Blavatnik understood his relationship with Epstein. EFTA01827979
May 2009: Cannes and the yacht My Odessa
Siegal later sent Epstein a report from Cannes. She described a lunch on Blavatnik’s yacht, My Odessa, and discussed possible Film Society events and private screenings. The email documents a shared entertainment and festival circuit involving Siegal and Blavatnik. It is not evidence that Epstein attended the lunch. EFTA02442761
July 2009: Employment request through Siegal
Epstein asked Siegal to get Blavatnik to help a Russian woman obtain a finance job in Moscow. He instructed Siegal to omit his name and instead present the woman as a friend of Ghislaine Maxwell. Siegal replied that she would contact Blavatnik. The released thread documents Epstein’s request and Siegal’s intention. It does not establish that Blavatnik received the request, interviewed the woman, or arranged employment. EFTA02439923
November 2009: List of financial players
In an email to Nicole Junkermann, Epstein included Blavatnik in a short list of wealthy financial figures with Theodore Forstmann and Leon Black. The context shows that Epstein grouped Blavatnik among people he regarded as consequential players. A list entry alone does not prove contact or a transaction. EFTA00768891
September 2010: Dinner invitation for Ehud Barak
Groff invited Blavatnik to a private dinner with Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak at Epstein’s residence at 9 East 71st Street in Manhattan. Blavatnik replied from London that he could not attend and asked her to convey his greetings to Epstein. A follow up guest status list marked him as not attending. This chain is direct evidence of communication with Epstein’s office and evidence that the invitation was declined. It is not evidence of attendance. EFTA02421173, EFTA02421941, EFTA02422408
September 2010: Peter Mandelson exchange
Peter Mandelson told Epstein that he was with Blavatnik in Oxford for the launch of a school. Epstein responded that he had invited Blavatnik to dinner and claimed that he knew him well. The statement is relevant evidence of how Epstein represented the relationship to Mandelson. It remains a self description by Epstein rather than an independently verified measure of closeness. EFTA01983179
May 2012: Cannes schedule and yacht lunch
Siegal’s Cannes schedules referred to a lunch involving Harvey Weinstein and Blavatnik on a boat. A separate report described a lunch on Blavatnik’s boat hosted by Weinstein for investors. These records place Blavatnik in the entertainment and investor milieu that overlapped with people in Epstein’s correspondence. They do not show that Epstein attended. EFTA02170071, EFTA02424030
December 2012: Larry Summers reference
Larry Summers told Epstein that he had visited Blavatnik and referred to Blavatnik as Epstein’s neighbor. The phrase suggests geographic proximity, probably in Manhattan, but does not by itself establish social closeness or a meeting among all three men. EFTA00701249
2014: Proposed dinner list
A planning document for a possible dinner included Blavatnik among a prominent group that also included Leon Black, Ehud Barak, Jes Staley, Larry Summers, Lloyd Blankfein, Timothy Geithner, and Terje Rรธd-Larsen. Because this is a proposed guest list, it establishes consideration, not an invitation accepted or an event attended. EFTA01924576
July 2014: James Meiskin introduction proposal
James Meiskin wrote that he wanted to introduce Blavatnik to Epstein while discussing a rescheduled meeting. This may indicate that Meiskin sought a business introduction, a renewed connection, or a meeting in a particular context. It complicates Epstein’s earlier claim that he knew Blavatnik well, but it does not necessarily contradict it. EFTA02101842
August 2014: Billionaire lists
Epstein included Blavatnik in a private list of billionaires and later named him among people Bill Gates might want to know. The documents show Epstein presenting himself as a broker of elite access. They do not establish that Gates asked for an introduction, that Blavatnik consented, or that an introduction occurred. EFTA01980504, EFTA00995604
September 2017: Maria Drokova investor request
Maria Drokova asked Epstein to identify suitable Russian oligarch investors. Epstein suggested Blavatnik. Drokova then requested an introduction. The released exchange shows a proposal and request, not a completed introduction or investment. EFTA00658058, EFTA02362021
October 2017: Reporty investment proposal
Nicole Junkermann wrote to Ehud Barak, copying Epstein, and proposed Blavatnik as a potential investor in Reporty, the emergency response technology company later known as Carbyne. The email establishes that Junkermann viewed him as a prospect. It does not establish that he was approached, performed due diligence, or invested. EFTA02580695
Financial Support, Gifts, Travel, and Benefits
No released record reviewed for this article establishes that Blavatnik paid Epstein, received money from Epstein, financed Epstein’s properties or operations, or entered a joint venture with him. The documents include proposed investor approaches and social references, but a proposal is not a transaction.
No verified entry placing Blavatnik aboard Epstein’s aircraft was located in the commonly published flight records reviewed for this article. Absence from an incomplete or contested flight record is not proof that two people never met. It does mean that a claim that Blavatnik flew on Epstein’s aircraft should not be published without a specific, authenticated flight entry.
The Cannes references concern Blavatnik’s yacht and entertainment events reported by Peggy Siegal. They do not show that Epstein supplied transportation or attended the events. No documented Epstein funded gift, accommodation, or travel benefit to Blavatnik was identified.
The Reporty and Drokova exchanges identify Blavatnik as a possible source of capital. Neither record proves that he invested. No financial link should be inferred from being named as a prospective investor.

Public Statements and Responses
No detailed public statement by Blavatnik specifically addressing the cited Epstein emails was located during preparation of this article. No public denial should be invented or inferred from silence.
Blavatnik and Access Industries have publicly addressed other controversies concerning his business career, Russian ties, philanthropy, and support for Ukraine. Those responses are relevant to his broader biography but do not answer the factual questions raised by the Epstein correspondence.
Where a news report says that Blavatnik, Access Industries, or a representative was contacted but did not comment, EpsteinWiki should identify the specific publication and date rather than converting a nonresponse into a substantive position.
Allegations Recorded in the Ganieva Materials
Guzel Ganieva accused Leon Black of rape and other misconduct. Black denied her allegations. Their litigation produced extensive disputes over payments, a nondisclosure agreement, and credibility. Blavatnik was not the defendant in Ganieva’s principal civil case against Black.
Two recorded 2015 calls between Ganieva and a person identified in the records as Black include claims involving Blavatnik. Ganieva described words or conduct that she interpreted as threatening. The other speaker disputed or questioned her interpretation and, in a later exchange, referred sarcastically to the idea of prominent associates participating in a campaign against her. The recordings establish that the claims were made. They do not independently prove the alleged conduct. EFTA01128746, EFTA00590667
An FBI interview report from 2021 records Ganieva’s further account. She alleged that, after an assault by Black, Blavatnik called and asked how she felt, later invited her to a party, and made statements that she understood as menacing during another conversation. An FBI interview report is a record of what an interviewee told investigators. It is not an FBI finding that every statement was true. The released document, standing alone, does not establish corroboration, Blavatnik’s intent, or criminal liability. EFTA01246236
These materials are included because they are substantive appearances in the released files and bear on public accountability. They must remain clearly separated from the direct Epstein contact record. No Epstein related criminal charge, civil judgment, or official finding against Blavatnik based on these allegations was located.
Legal Status
As of September 2026, no public record located for this article shows that Blavatnik has been charged with an Epstein related crime, sued successfully for participation in Epstein’s abuse, or found by a court to have participated in Epstein’s trafficking enterprise.
The released emails do not establish criminal conduct. The direct 2010 exchange shows an invitation declined. Proposed introductions and investor suggestions do not create legal liability without evidence of further action. The Ganieva materials record serious allegations, but no charge or adjudication against Blavatnik arising from them was located.
Ukraine’s reported sanctions against Blavatnik concern national security and Russia related policy. They are not an Epstein related legal action. Sanctions, criminal charges, civil judgments, and journalistic allegations are different categories and should not be collapsed into one another.
What Evidence Establishes
- Blavatnik and Epstein were acquainted at some level.
- Epstein’s office directly invited Blavatnik to a dinner in 2010.
- Blavatnik declined that event and sent greetings to Epstein.
- Epstein claimed to Mandelson that he knew Blavatnik well.
- Epstein and associates repeatedly mentioned Blavatnik as a possible employer, investor, social contact, or introduction target.
- Blavatnik moved in business, political, philanthropic, and entertainment circles that overlapped with Epstein’s network.
- Ganieva made serious allegations involving Blavatnik in recorded calls and an FBI interview.
What Evidence Does Not Establish
- That Blavatnik attended the 2010 Barak dinner. The available record says he declined.
- That he visited Epstein’s homes on another occasion.
- That he flew on Epstein’s aircraft.
- That he paid Epstein, received money from Epstein, or formed a joint business venture with him.
- That he invested in Reporty, Carbyne, or a Drokova project because Epstein or Junkermann suggested him.
- That he knew about Epstein’s abuse or trafficking.
- That he facilitated, participated in, or benefited from Epstein’s crimes.
- That every statement Epstein made about knowing or being able to reach Blavatnik was accurate.
- That the Ganieva allegations involving Blavatnik were corroborated or adjudicated.
Why This Person Matters
Blavatnik matters to the Epstein record because he illustrates how Epstein attempted to convert familiarity with wealthy and influential people into social authority. Epstein used names as currency. He could suggest an investor, promise a connection, recommend a job candidate, or imply that he belonged inside a circle of billionaires even when the released record does not show that the named person consented.
The 2010 invitation provides a useful evidentiary control. It proves direct contact, but it also proves a refusal. That distinction demonstrates why guest lists and planning emails must be checked against replies and attendance records.
Blavatnik’s presence also connects several sectors that recur throughout the Epstein archive: global finance, entertainment, philanthropy, Israeli political networks, Russian and post Soviet capital, and technology investment. Mapping those overlaps can identify avenues for further document requests. It cannot substitute for evidence of action or wrongdoing.
The Ganieva material matters for a different reason. It contains allegations, not merely social name dropping. Responsible coverage must preserve those allegations without presenting them as proven, and must explain that they arose within a broader dispute centered on Leon Black.
