In Before the Epstein Files: Inside the Nightclubs Where Predators Partied, Bekah Day introduces the photographic archive of Brazilian born journalist and nightlife photographer Selma Fonseca.

Fonseca spent more than two decades photographing celebrities, models, musicians, business figures, politicians and royalty at private parties, nightclubs, fashion events and international festivals.

She says her complete archive contains approximately two million photographs. About 70,000 images are publicly searchable through the Selma Fonseca Celebrity Archive.

Fonseca says she never met Jeffrey Epstein and did not know about his trafficking operation. Her relevance comes from her professional access to many of the same social environments occupied by Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, modeling agents, wealthy patrons and young models.

The photographs are important historical evidence. They can establish that particular people were present together at a specific event, venue or period. They can also document the culture within private nightlife spaces that received little contemporary scrutiny.

Who Is Selma Fonseca?

Selma Fonseca began photographing New York nightlife during the late 1990s.

She developed relationships with club owners, promoters and publicists while working as a jewelry designer. Those relationships eventually gave her professional access to private parties and entertainment events.

Fonseca supplied photographs and stories to the New York Daily News and its Rush and Molloy column for approximately fifteen years. She later photographed Hollywood premieres, award shows, Vanity Fair Oscar parties, the Cannes Film Festival, amfAR events and private gatherings across New York, Los Angeles, Miami, the Hamptons, St. Tropez, Sardinia and St. Barth.

She also wrote the Billboard column “Overheard,” interviewing musicians and artists.

Her archive matters because it documents a period when private parties were rarely recorded by ordinary guests. Professional photographers often produced the only durable visual record of who entered these spaces and how the events were structured.

Why the Photographs Matter

Nightlife photographs can answer several important questions.

They can establish that two people attended the same event. Clothing, venue details, published guest lists and adjacent photographs can help determine the date. Repeated appearances can reveal continuing relationships rather than isolated encounters.

The images can also document how clubs and private events operated. They may show security practices, private rooms, access hierarchies, interactions between promoters and models and the presence of people who later appeared in Epstein records.

However, responsible analysis requires strict limits.

A photograph cannot establish someone’s age merely because the person appears young. It cannot prove that an unidentified woman was a survivor. It cannot show whether someone attended voluntarily, was working, was being paid or was being controlled.

A white powder or residue visible in a photograph cannot be identified chemically as cocaine. A person standing beside someone accused of misconduct is not automatically an accomplice.

Most importantly, a social photograph documents a moment. Criminal knowledge and intent normally require communications, testimony, financial evidence or a pattern of conduct beyond the image.

Vikram Chatwal and the Maxwell Colombia Story

One of the article’s most important historical sources is George Gurley’s 2002 Observer profile of Vikram Chatwal.

The article reported that Chatwal attended a dinner at Maxwell’s home with Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. According to Gurley, Maxwell told the guests that she had flown a Black Hawk helicopter in Colombia and fired a rocket into what she described as a terrorist camp.

That story was published years before Maxwell became globally known as Epstein’s convicted accomplice.

Later photographs show Maxwell in Colombia wearing military flight clothing and standing near a helicopter. Additional reporting and Colombian travel records place Epstein or Maxwell in the country during the relevant period.

The later evidence supports several parts of the story.

Maxwell visited Colombia. She had contact with then President Andrés Pastrana. She had access to military aviation. She later acknowledged flying in a Black Hawk helicopter.

The evidence does not establish whom Maxwell allegedly fired at, whether she personally operated a weapon, whether ammunition was live, who authorized the activity or whether anyone was injured.

Calling Maxwell a potential war criminal is therefore an investigative hypothesis, not an established legal conclusion.

If Maxwell fired a weapon from a Colombian military aircraft at people during an armed conflict, serious legal questions would follow. Those questions require Colombian military records, flight logs, mission reports, weapons records and testimony from the crew.

Important Timeline Correction

The Observer article was published in November 2002. Bill Clinton had left office in January 2001.

The United States and Colombia negotiated and implemented major parts of Plan Colombia during Clinton’s presidency. However, the publication of Chatwal’s account occurred after Clinton left office.

The date of the alleged helicopter event must be established independently rather than inferred from the publication date.

Fawaz Gruosi and the Luxury Jewelry Network

Fawaz Gruosi founded the luxury jewelry company de Grisogono.

He moved through the same international social environments as Maxwell, Naomi Campbell, Flavio Briatore and other people who appear within Epstein’s broader social network.

Fonseca’s archive includes photographs of Gruosi at Cipriani events and other elite gatherings. Other published photographs place him with Maxwell and Amanda Ungaro.

The images establish social proximity. They do not establish that Gruosi participated in Epstein’s trafficking operation.

Gruosi’s business history is independently significant. In 2012, investors connected to Angolan billionaire Isabel dos Santos and her husband, Sindika Dokolo, acquired a controlling interest in de Grisogono.

The Luanda Leaks investigation later examined how Angolan state assets and offshore structures were allegedly used to benefit dos Santos and her associates.

That controversy concerns corruption and public assets in Angola. It should not be treated as proof that de Grisogono was part of Epstein’s criminal operation.

The relevant investigative question is whether the jewelry, fashion and international party networks created introductions or access for Epstein, Maxwell or their recruiters.

Cipriani Upstairs

The most significant venue examined in Bekah Day’s report is Cipriani’s private Upstairs club.

Fonseca’s photographs show a highly sexualized party environment. Women dance on a bar. Men place money into clothing. Giuseppe Cipriani Jr. appears in several images interacting with the dancers. Other photographs show wealthy guests, models and entertainers inside the venue.

The photographs are important because released Epstein emails independently connect him to the private space.

EFTA02422385 contains an email from Stefania Girombelli identifying herself as someone who worked with Giuseppe Cipriani in New York.

EFTA02422405 records Girombelli writing to Epstein about arranging his visit to the Upstairs club in September 2010.

These documents establish that Epstein sought access and that a person working with Cipriani helped coordinate it.

They do not prove that Epstein attended every event Fonseca photographed. The photographs and emails must be matched by date before researchers claim that Epstein was present on a specific evening.

Reporting about Cipriani has also intersected with allegations involving Harvey Weinstein and other wealthy patrons. That history makes the venue relevant when studying how exclusive hospitality spaces could provide access to women and shield powerful guests from public observation.

Still, calling Cipriani a trafficking venue requires evidence beyond party photographs. Researchers would need testimony, staffing records, guest lists, payments, security records and communications showing recruitment or exploitation.

The Alleged Cocaine Photograph

Bekah Day describes one photograph as showing cocaine residue near a person lying on a couch.

The photograph may show a white substance or residue. It cannot establish the chemical identity of that substance.

Without a contemporaneous witness statement, laboratory analysis or admission, the safest description is “an unidentified white substance or residue.”

Paolo Zampolli

Paolo Zampolli founded ID Models and moved through elite New York fashion, business and political circles. He is widely credited with introducing Melania Knauss to Donald Trump.

His relationships with Maxwell, modeling figures and members of the Trump social circle make him relevant to network analysis.

Fonseca’s archive includes photographs of Zampolli with designer Roberto Cavalli and other people in the fashion and nightlife worlds.

The pictures establish social access. They do not establish that the unidentified women pictured were minors or victims.

The Victoria Drake Lawsuit

Bekah Day states that Zampolli was sued by Victoria Drake over an alleged October 2023 sexual assault.

The timing requires clarification. Drake filed her federal civil complaint in September 2026. The alleged incident occurred in October 2023.

A complaint records the plaintiff’s allegations. It is not a finding that the alleged assault occurred. Zampolli is entitled to contest the claims in court.

Amanda Ungaro’s Allegations

Amanda Ungaro has accused Zampolli of physical, sexual and psychological abuse and of using political influence during their custody and immigration dispute.

Zampolli denied her abuse allegations. He also denied causing her detention or deportation, although he acknowledged contacting an immigration official after her arrest.

Reporting indicates that an official contacted the Miami immigration office about the case. The precise effect of Zampolli’s communications remains disputed.

Ungaro’s allegations should be reported as her account rather than as established fact.

The Italian Television Statement

Bekah Day says Zampolli admitted on Italian television that he knew Epstein was trafficking minors.

That claim requires publication of the complete interview, an accurate translation and the surrounding questions. Short excerpts or captions may omit distinctions between what Zampolli knew at the time and what he learned later.

Until the complete recording and translation are preserved, the safest description is that Italian reporting has been interpreted as showing Zampolli acknowledging knowledge of Epstein’s conduct. The timing and extent of that claimed knowledge remain contested.

TerraMar

Zampolli’s support for Maxwell’s TerraMar Project is relevant because the organization helped Maxwell regain public legitimacy after Epstein’s Florida conviction.

Participation in or support for TerraMar does not by itself establish knowledge of Maxwell’s trafficking conduct. It does show how philanthropy and international institutions helped restore her access to respectable spaces.

Kid Rock and the Nightlife Culture

Fonseca photographed Kid Rock at a crowded New York party attended by women whose ages are not established in the images.

Bekah Day connects the photographs to lyrics in which Kid Rock sexualized underage girls.

Those lyrics are part of the public record and are relevant to the culture he marketed. They do not prove that any person photographed with him was underage or that criminal conduct occurred at the party.

Survivor Barbara Adler told Bekah Day that she attended the event and remembered many young women being present. Her account adds witness context, but the identities and ages of the women require independent confirmation.

The evidentiary value lies in combining the images with a witness who remembers the event. Even then, the photographs should not be captioned as depicting “girls” unless their ages are verified.

The Broader Nightlife Ecosystem

Fonseca’s images help illustrate an ecosystem where club owners, promoters, modeling agents, celebrities and wealthy patrons repeatedly occupied the same rooms.

This ecosystem mattered to Epstein because access was one of his primary resources.

Exclusive venues allowed introductions to occur informally. Modeling agents supplied young talent. Promoters controlled invitations. Famous guests gave events legitimacy. Private rooms reduced outside observation.

None of these functions is inherently criminal. Nightclubs, modeling agencies and private events can operate lawfully.

The investigative question is whether particular people used those systems to identify, groom, transport or exploit vulnerable women and girls.

That question cannot be answered through atmosphere alone. It requires comparison among photographs, messages, calendars, payments, travel records and survivor accounts.

Why This Matters

Epstein investigations often begin with documents created by police, banks, attorneys or courts.

Fonseca’s archive represents a different type of record. It preserves the social environment in which access was created.

The photographs may help researchers identify people who were unnamed in released government images. They may establish dates, recurring relationships and the physical layout of private venues. They may also corroborate survivor descriptions of parties, promoters or modeling figures.

This type of evidence is especially important because trafficking networks do not operate only through formal organizations. They can depend on social spaces where power differences are normalized and young people are surrounded by wealthy adults.

The archive should be handled with care. Publishing photographs of potential survivors can cause new harm. Faces should not be identified publicly without reliable sourcing, a clear public interest and a survivor safety review.
