Key Takeaways
- Ariane de Rothschild maintained a sustained relationship with Jeffrey Epstein after his 2008 conviction was publicly known.
- Epstein’s role extended beyond ordinary financial consulting. The records show him advising Ariane about United States legal exposure, bank strategy, regulatory crises, possible transactions, Rothschild family disputes, professional appointments, health, marriage, and decisions involving her family.
- An October 2015 agreement between Edmond de Rothschild Holding and Epstein’s Southern Trust Company promised Epstein’s business $25 million for work that included matters involving the United States.
- An earlier email described a proposed sliding payment formula based on the size of the United States Department of Justice penalty. That proposal and the final agreement are related records, but their terms are not identical.
- Bank records show a $10 million transfer from Edmond de Rothschild Suisse on December 17, 2015, and a $14,999,980 transfer from Benjamin de Rothschild on December 21, 2015.
- Between those transfers, the Department of Justice announced that Edmond de Rothschild Switzerland would pay a $45.245 million penalty for assisting United States clients with undeclared Swiss accounts.
- Epstein introduced Ariane to lawyers, financiers, political figures, and prospective business partners. The network included Kathy Ruemmler, Ehud Barak, Leon Black, Joshua Cooper Ramo, and representatives of Qatari interests.
- Correspondence documents visits or planned meetings at Epstein’s New York townhouse and Paris apartment, as well as meetings in Geneva and other locations.
- Ariane requested architectural plans for guest houses on Epstein’s island. The record may show design consultation, but it does not prove she visited Little Saint James.
- Contact continued after renewed public scrutiny of Epstein in 2018. Emails show communications and proposed meetings during the first four months of 2019.
- No reviewed document establishes that Ariane participated in Epstein’s sexual crimes, recruited victims, visited his island, or knew that his abuse was continuing.
Overview
Ariane de Rothschild is the Chief Executive Officer and principal owner of the Edmond de Rothschild Group, a family controlled private banking and asset management business based in Geneva.
Released correspondence and financial records document a substantial relationship between Ariane and Epstein beginning in 2013. Epstein became a personal confidant, strategic adviser, intermediary, and source of professional introductions during a period when Ariane was consolidating control over the banking group.
The documentary record reaches into several sensitive areas. Epstein discussed the bank’s United States tax investigation, the 1MDB crisis, banking compliance, a possible sale or combination involving the group, disputes with other Rothschild branches, succession planning, senior appointments, family relationships, and private health concerns.
The strongest financial evidence is the October 2015 agreement between Edmond de Rothschild Holding and Southern Trust Company. The agreement described risk analysis and the application of algorithms. It also tied a $25 million payment to matters involving Edmond de Rothschild and the United States.
The Department of Justice announced a $45.245 million resolution with Edmond de Rothschild Switzerland on December 18, 2015. Bank records show two transfers to Southern Trust totaling $24,999,980 immediately before and after that announcement.
The evidence establishes extensive access and a major financial relationship. It does not establish that Ariane participated in Epstein’s abuse or trafficking operation.
Identity Verification
Ariane de Rothschild was born Ariane Langner in San Salvador in 1965. She spent parts of her childhood in Latin America, Europe, and Africa before studying in Paris and completing an MBA at Pace University in New York.
She began her financial career with Société Générale and later worked for AIG. She married Benjamin de Rothschild in 1999 and became involved in the Rothschild family’s banking, wine, hotel, sailing, and philanthropic operations.
Ariane joined the board of Edmond de Rothschild Holding in 2006. She became chair of the group’s executive committee in January 2015 and Chief Executive Officer in March 2023. The group’s official Ariane de Rothschild biography confirms her career and leadership role.
She must not be confused with Lynn Forester de Rothschild, Evelyn de Rothschild, Jacob Rothschild, or other people carrying the Rothschild name.
One independent report claimed that a passenger listed as “Ariane Devonvoisin” on a 2004 flight was Ariane de Rothschild and called Devonvoisin her maiden name. That identification is unsupported. Ariane’s birth name was Langner, not Devonvoisin. Without additional corroboration, the 2004 passenger entry must not be attributed to her.
Automated indexes also return thousands of results under “A. de Rothschild.” Some are duplicate emails, copied messages, attachments, forwarded chains, unrelated Rothschild references, or possible entity resolution errors. Search result totals must not be presented as thousands of direct emails personally written by Ariane without document level verification.
Documented Epstein Connection
Introduction and early development
Le Monde reported that Epstein entered Ariane’s circle through contacts involving former Edmond de Rothschild adviser Olivier Colom and diplomat Terje Rød Larsen.
In September 2013, Epstein arranged a breakfast or meeting involving Ariane and former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. The same correspondence referenced Joshua Cooper Ramo, whom Epstein described through his connection to Henry Kissinger. See EFTA00969121.
Later correspondence from Colom said Ariane had been speaking about Epstein’s advice. This supports the conclusion that the relationship intensified quickly after the introduction.
Because Epstein pleaded guilty to offenses involving a minor in 2008, his conviction and sex offender status were already public when his relationship with Ariane developed.
The role Epstein assumed
The records show Epstein operating as an adviser in at least six distinct areas.
First, he discussed the bank’s exposure to the United States Department of Justice and communicated with people involved in the bank’s legal response.
Second, he advised Ariane about corporate strategy, ownership, possible transactions, and banking partnerships.
Third, he helped connect Ariane with lawyers, bankers, investors, political figures, and prospective clients.
Fourth, he became involved in disputes between branches and members of the Rothschild family.
Fifth, he advised on regulatory and reputation crises, including matters connected to 1MDB.
Sixth, he received and discussed highly personal information about Ariane’s marriage, children, health, travel, and private decisions.
This combined role is why describing the relationship as a few routine banking meetings is incomplete.
Department of Justice matter
The United States Department of Justice established the Swiss Bank Program in 2013 to resolve potential criminal liability involving Swiss banks that assisted United States taxpayers with undeclared accounts.
Records from July 2015 show Ariane’s assistant coordinating with Epstein about preparation for an August Department of Justice meeting, including possible review work in Luxembourg and document movement involving Kathy Ruemmler. See EFTA02491523.
Another communication shows Epstein emphasizing that the Department of Justice matter outweighed other financial and operational decisions facing the group. See EFTA02498079.
Epstein introduced Ruemmler to Ariane after Ruemmler left the Obama White House and returned to Latham & Watkins. Ruemmler and her firm performed legal work for Edmond de Rothschild.
A calendar record states “Appt w/Kathy & Ariane,” documenting direct coordination among participants. The entry does not identify the meeting’s subject. See EFTA02075023.
A separate October 2015 scheduling message said Ruemmler was occupied with “Rothschild stuff.” See EFTA02715306.
In her July 2026 congressional testimony, Ruemmler said Epstein was an adviser to Ariane. She described the relationship she personally observed as a business relationship and said she did not know whether Epstein managed Ariane’s money. The House Oversight transcript is the controlling source for her testimony.
The consulting agreement
The principal agreement is dated October 5, 2015. It identifies Epstein as president of Southern Trust Company and Edmond de Rothschild Holding as the other contracting party, represented by Ariane.
The agreement says Epstein and Southern Trust had been collaborating with Ariane on risk analysis and the application and use of certain algorithms. It describes continued work on those “Specified Matters.”
For work related to outstanding matters involving Edmond de Rothschild Holding and the United States, the agreement provided for a $25 million payment to Southern Trust. It also allowed reimbursement of travel and related expenses and contained confidentiality and indemnification provisions.
The agreement appears in EFTA00310331. Additional copies or related versions appear in EFTA01191842, EFTA01130115, and EFTA01196959.
An earlier communication described a proposed sliding formula under which Southern Trust would receive different amounts depending on the final government penalty. The proposal referenced $5 million, $10 million, and $25 million levels. See EFTA02493823.
The sliding proposal should not be quoted as though it were the exact language of every final agreement copy. The documents show evolving compensation discussions followed by an agreement providing for a $25 million payment.
Department of Justice resolution and transfers
On December 18, 2015, the Department of Justice announced that Edmond de Rothschild Suisse and Edmond de Rothschild Lugano had resolved potential criminal liability under the Swiss Bank Program.
The department said the banks had helped United States clients maintain undeclared accounts and conceal assets and income. It described numbered accounts, sham entities, offshore structures, covert transfers, cash withdrawals, and other methods used to conceal ownership.
The banks agreed to cooperate and pay a combined penalty of $45.245 million. The department reported approximately 950 United States related accounts with an aggregate peak value of $2.16 billion.
The financial exhibit in EFTA00027019 identifies two transfers to Southern Trust:
- Edmond de Rothschild Suisse transferred $10 million on December 17, 2015.
- Benjamin Edmond de Rothschild transferred $14,999,980 on December 21, 2015.
The combined amount was $24,999,980, only $20 short of $25 million.
The timing and amount closely correspond to the consulting agreement. The first transfer came one day before the Department of Justice announcement. The second came three days after it.
The records identify Southern Trust as the recipient. Southern Trust was controlled by Epstein, but the transfers should not be described as payments to an account held personally in Epstein’s name unless the specific account record establishes that detail.
Southern Trust and the absence of identified work products
A later Virgin Islands civil complaint alleged that Southern Trust appeared to perform no genuine informatics or data mining services during the period when it received substantial tax benefits. The complaint alleged that the company instead served as a financial conduit supporting Epstein’s enterprise.
That allegation appears in litigation connected to the Virgin Islands government’s case against Epstein’s estate. The case ended in a settlement exceeding $105 million. A settlement does not establish every allegation in the complaint as an adjudicated fact.
The complaint is nevertheless relevant because the Rothschild agreement expressly referenced algorithms and risk analysis. No publicly identified algorithm, report, software product, source code, or comparable deliverable has been tied specifically to the Rothschild agreement.
This absence does not prove that no services were performed. It means the released record does not presently establish what deliverable justified the payment.
The Virgin Islands government settlement announcement and the underlying civil filings provide the legal context.
The 1MDB crisis
In 2016, Edmond de Rothschild faced scrutiny related to money connected to the 1MDB scandal.
In May 2016, Ariane told Epstein she was taking substantial pressure over Malaysia. Epstein responded that crisis management was a specialized skill and offered to help assemble a team. See EFTA00828304 and EFTA00699353.
In June, Ariane wrote about preparing for a meeting with Luxembourg financial regulator CSSF concerning 1MDB. See EFTA02459923.
In July, Ariane asked Epstein what “DOJ guys” would prefer concerning her travel. Epstein answered by discussing how United States officials might perceive her departure. See EFTA02456426.
In September, Ruemmler forwarded Epstein a report concerning a police search of Edmond de Rothschild. See EFTA02452636.
Another record shows Epstein advising that compliance should not report directly to the chief executive and that decisions should be reviewed by Ruemmler. See EFTA02337209.
These records demonstrate advisory access. They do not prove that Epstein held an official bank position or exercised lawful authority over the bank’s compliance function.
Corporate strategy and family disputes
Epstein advised Ariane during disagreements involving ownership and other Rothschild branches.
A March 2014 exchange discusses removing David de Rothschild’s position in Ariane’s bank and the possibility of a third party purchasing shares. See EFTA01932438.
Emails concerning the use of the Rothschild name and communications from Jacob Rothschild appear in EFTA00720817, EFTA00845468, EFTA00844785, and EFTA01797382.
The correspondence shows Epstein carrying messages, evaluating family members and employees, and attempting to facilitate resolutions. This is evidence of involvement in the dispute, not proof that his advice determined the outcome.
In April 2017, Epstein analyzed the financial implications of a possible banking combination. See EFTA02655220.
In March 2019, he congratulated Ariane on a transaction that took the bank private and referred to future opportunities. See EFTA01030467.
Personal and family relationship
The communications extended beyond business.
A March 2014 exchange contains sensitive descriptions of family and marital distress. Its evidentiary importance is that Ariane treated Epstein as a confidant and adviser. See EFTA02395020.
In April 2015, Ariane discussed marriage, separation, a daughter, travel, and property. She told Epstein that she was using a new email address “that nobody can access.” See EFTA02502971.
Other documents confirm use of addresses on the personal aderfam.ch domain. See EFTA01802148, EFTA00657588, and the collected correspondence in EFTA02311949.
The phrase “nobody can access” is Ariane’s description. The document does not prove that the address was technically untraceable or beyond legal discovery.
In November 2015, Ariane discussed hospitalization and returning to work. Epstein advised her about rest, health, business, home, charity, family, wine, hotels, personnel, and new transactions. See EFTA02394035 and EFTA00704054.
In January 2017, Epstein sent health information concerning statins and nightmares. See EFTA02664889.
In February 2018, Epstein relayed private information about Ariane’s marriage to Ruemmler. The record shows his possession and redistribution of personal information. It does not establish the truth of every statement Epstein made. The correspondence appears in House Oversight material identified as HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_025660.
Gifts, deliveries, and personal logistics
Records show exchanges of personal items and logistical assistance.
A hoverboard was shipped for one of Ariane’s daughters. See EFTA02461460.
Books were arranged for Alice de Rothschild through a series of communications. See EFTA02457688.
Four DNA ancestry kits were shipped to Ariane’s Geneva address in March 2017. See EFTA02657180. The record proves delivery arrangements. It does not prove who used the kits, whether samples were returned, or what happened to any resulting data.
Ariane was also asked to contribute a short recollection for Epstein’s birthday booklet concerning a meal in his dining room. She agreed to prepare something. See EFTA02070696.
Other records mention wine deliveries and exchanges. These details support the existence of a familiar personal relationship but do not independently establish criminal conduct.
Meetings and Epstein properties
A February 2014 record schedules a dinner at L’Ami Louis involving Ariane, Epstein, and Fabrice Aidan. See EFTA01933360.
In February 2015, Epstein’s staff arranged a meeting with Ariane at his Paris apartment for March 1. See EFTA02085160 and EFTA02084634.
In March 2015, Ariane told Epstein that she was happy he was in Paris and proposed discussions involving the Department of Justice, international legal changes, and succession planning. See EFTA02508370.
On November 10, 2015, Ariane arranged to collect Epstein at the Geneva jet terminal during a same day visit. See EFTA00634483.
A September 2017 schedule recorded Ariane’s presence in New York and a proposed meeting. See EFTA02223735.
In October 2017, Ariane was scheduled to accompany Epstein, Karyna Shuliak, and David Mitchell during a visit to 854 Fifth Avenue. Correspondence concerning building identification requirements culminated in confirmation that Ariane’s passport had been received. See EFTA02228037.
A June 2017 operational record added Ariane to a contact list connected to Epstein’s Paris arrangements. See EFTA02215417.
Reuters also reported that Epstein invited Ariane to stay at his Paris apartment in 2016, saying the arrangement would be private. She declined the invitation and said she would stay elsewhere.
Little Saint James architectural plans
In November 2014, Ariane requested architectural plans for guest houses on Epstein’s island so she could “work on it better.” The email’s subject was “Island.” See EFTA01747754.
The record supports possible design or planning involvement. It does not prove that Ariane visited Little Saint James.
No verified flight or property record reviewed for this article establishes her presence on Little Saint James, at Epstein’s Palm Beach house, or at Zorro Ranch.
Karyna Shuliak and Edmond de Rothschild properties
In December 2018, Epstein and staff discussed arrangements for Karyna Shuliak to visit Megève. Ariane’s assistant participated in accommodation planning, and Epstein’s office said Epstein would pay the expenses. See EFTA02267305.
A February 2019 message thanked Ariane for organizing a tour for Karyna. See EFTA01029488.
These records show continued personal and logistical cooperation after the Miami Herald’s November 2018 reporting renewed public attention to Epstein’s abuse and favorable plea arrangement.
Ehud Barak and technology ventures
Epstein repeatedly acted as an intermediary between Ariane and Ehud Barak.
The initial 2013 meeting appears in EFTA00969121. Later correspondence concerned introductions, meetings, investment concepts, banking relationships, and technology ventures.
A June 2018 message from Ariane said she had seen Barak in Israel. See EFTA02625206.
Drop Site News reported that Epstein sought Edmond de Rothschild support for Israeli cybersecurity and surveillance related ventures associated with Barak. Epstein also used Southern Trust in connection with an investment in Reporty, later renamed Carbyne.
Relevant financial records include EFTA01404004, EFTA01360536, and EFTA01360528.
These documents establish that Southern Trust participated in Reporty related financial activity. They do not prove that the money transferred to Southern Trust by the Rothschild parties was the same money later used for Reporty. Money in a common entity may be commingled, and a specific source to destination tracing requires complete account records.
The records show Epstein pursuing Ariane’s participation. They do not establish that Ariane or Edmond de Rothschild ultimately financed the broader cybertechnology program described in the proposals.
Other introductions and proposed transactions
In July 2015, Epstein said he had arranged a New York meeting involving Ariane and representatives connected to Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani. See EFTA02497178.
A related record discusses a possible joint venture involving KBL Luxembourg and Edmond de Rothschild Switzerland. See EFTA02496947.
In January 2016, Leon Black requested Ariane’s telephone number through Epstein in connection with a Paris meeting. See EFTA02474193.
An October 2016 message from Lawrence Summers referred to showing a Rothschild visitor around Harvard. See EFTA02449494. The abbreviated language requires caution regarding the visitor’s exact identity.
A 2018 planning record placed Ariane among people Epstein wanted others to meet. See EFTA02236657.
Additional communications reference Kazakhstan, Davos, the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum, Saudi interests, Donald Trump, and possible senior bank recruitment. Relevant records include EFTA02394675, EFTA02368796, EFTA02449600, EFTA02360595, and EFTA02498663.
These brief references demonstrate Epstein’s brokerage activity. They do not prove that every proposed meeting, investment, or transaction occurred.
Final communications
The relationship continued through 2018 and into 2019.
A November 2018 communication discussed Ariane flying to New York and proposed a Saturday meeting. That record appears in House Oversight material identified as HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_030741.
In January 2019, Ariane sent Epstein a belated birthday greeting. In February, correspondence discussed a possible New York visit involving two of her daughters. The proposal is evidence of continued contact, but available summaries do not establish that the visit occurred.
In February 2019, Epstein asked whether recent negative reporting had caused Ariane concern. That message is especially relevant because it shows Epstein understood that public reporting might affect the relationship.
In March 2019, Epstein and Ariane exchanged messages about being in Paris and discussed meeting. Other communications from that period included familiar language inconsistent with a purely formal relationship. See EFTA02631640 and EFTA02636292.
The latest identified email in the reviewed collection is dated April 4, 2019, when Epstein asked whether Ariane was feeling better. See EFTA01033727.
Epstein was arrested on July 6, 2019.

Legal Status and Evidence Limits
No public criminal charge has been filed against Ariane de Rothschild in connection with Epstein’s sexual crimes.
No survivor identified in the reviewed record has accused Ariane of sexual abuse, recruitment, trafficking, or participation in Epstein’s exploitation operation.
Reuters reported that the documents it reviewed did not appear to show criminal wrongdoing by Ariane. Le Monde similarly reported that its review did not implicate her in Epstein’s sexual crimes.
The records prove that Ariane maintained extensive contact with Epstein after his conviction. They prove that Epstein advised her, attended or planned meetings with her, received sensitive information from her, connected her with influential people, and entered a major financial agreement with her banking group.
The records do not prove that Ariane knew Epstein’s abuse was continuing. Public knowledge of his 2008 conviction is not the same as proof that a particular person knew about later or undisclosed criminal conduct.
The records also do not prove that Ariane visited Little Saint James. Her request for architectural plans must be reported separately from physical travel.
The transfer of approximately $25 million to Southern Trust does not establish that Ariane funded a specific later transaction involving Barak, Reporty, or another recipient. A complete tracing analysis would require the relevant account balances, transaction sequence, and commingling records.
The lack of an identified consulting deliverable raises a legitimate evidentiary question. It does not, by itself, prove that the agreement was fraudulent.
The bank has stated that Epstein was a business acquaintance, that a more personal relationship developed, that Ariane did not know about his criminal behavior, and that she unequivocally condemns his crimes.
Those statements represent the bank’s position. They should be reported alongside, not substituted for, the underlying correspondence and financial records.
The experiences of Epstein’s survivors remain the central issue. Examining the people who supplied Epstein with money, access, legitimacy, and institutional credibility helps explain how he continued operating after his conviction. That examination must remain precise enough to distinguish documented access from participation in abuse.
Sleuth and Independent Reporting
Julie K. Brown’s investigation examined how Epstein obtained approximately $25 million through the Swiss bank resolution and challenged claims that sophisticated associates could not have discovered his public criminal history.
R. Howard Stone’s Rothschild investigation traced the Southern Trust transfers, the aderfam.ch communications, the Department of Justice timing, the 1MDB correspondence, and Epstein’s broader brokerage activity. Its analytical conclusions require checking against the linked EFTA records. Its claim identifying “Ariane Devonvoisin” as Ariane de Rothschild is not supported by Ariane’s verified identity and is excluded from this article.
R. Howard Stone’s financial flow report places the Rothschild transfers within the larger Southern Trust account network. The report is a research aid. The individual transaction records remain the primary evidence.
Amber Woods’ survivor centered analysis examined a January 2017 message in which Epstein advised Ariane about a decision involving her adult daughter. Woods interpreted Epstein’s language as evidence of unusual access to private family decisions. The email demonstrates proximity, but it does not prove abuse involving Ariane or her daughter.
American Freakshow’s investigation examined Kathy Ruemmler’s relationship with Epstein and challenged narrower accounts of when Epstein began arranging meetings and legal introductions. The reporting identifies Ariane among the influential people Epstein expected Ruemmler to encounter.
Drop Site News documented Epstein’s attempts to connect Ariane and the Edmond de Rothschild Group with Ehud Barak’s banking and technology ventures. The investigation distinguishes Epstein’s pursuit of financing from proof that Ariane ultimately funded the proposed program.
