Snapshot

Lapo Elkann is an Italian entrepreneur and member of the Agnelli family, the dynasty historically associated with Fiat and major Italian industrial, financial, and media interests.

His name appears in a small but significant collection of records released from the files of Jeffrey Epstein. The documents include correspondence in which Epstein offered to contact Elkann for a woman, messages in which Epstein described Elkann as a friend, an invitation that reportedly referred to Epstein as a dear friend, and correspondence concerning a London reception featuring Elkann.

The reviewed public record establishes some degree of social familiarity between Epstein and Elkann. It also shows Epstein presenting himself as someone capable of contacting Elkann and arranging an introduction.

The evidence does not establish that Elkann visited Epstein’s residences, travelled on Epstein’s aircraft, received a massage arranged by Epstein’s staff, participated in Epstein’s sexual abuse, or knew that Epstein was trafficking girls and young women.

In June 2026, Epstein employee Lesley Groff told congressional investigators that she did not know who Elkann was and had never arranged a massage for him.

On August 31, 2026, Representative Thomas Massie named Elkann during a House floor speech among people he said should be investigated and prosecuted as Epstein associates or possible coconspirators. Massie’s statement was a congressional allegation. It was not a criminal charge, indictment, civil judgment, or judicial finding, and the specific evidence underlying his reference to Elkann was not identified in the speech.

The Elkann record therefore requires a strict distinction between documented social contact, investigative interpretation, congressional allegations, and proof of criminal conduct.

Early Life and the Agnelli Family

Lapo Edovard Elkann was born in New York City on October 7, 1977.

He is the son of writer and journalist Alain Elkann and Margherita Agnelli de Pahlen. His maternal grandfather was Gianni Agnelli, the longtime leader of Fiat and one of the most influential figures in postwar Italian industry.

Elkann’s older brother, John Elkann, became chairman of Stellantis and chief executive of Exor, the Agnelli family holding company. His sister, Ginevra Elkann, is a film producer and director.

The family occupies a prominent position in Italian corporate and social life. That background placed Lapo Elkann within international circles involving business executives, political figures, artists, designers, financiers, and members of European high society.

A biographical profile published by amfAR describes Elkann’s work in communications, design, automotive branding, and charitable activity.

Business Career

Elkann worked in several roles connected with Fiat, including brand promotion and communications. He became especially associated with efforts to modernize Fiat’s public image and promote the Fiat 500.

He later founded Italia Independent, an eyewear and lifestyle company built around Italian design and customized products.

Elkann also established Garage Italia, a creative enterprise involving automotive design, customization, branding, and cultural collaborations.

His public persona combined the Agnelli family’s industrial legacy with fashion, art, luxury products, and celebrity culture. This made him a frequent presence at international exhibitions, benefits, fashion events, automotive presentations, and private receptions.

In 2016, Elkann founded the LAPS Foundation. The organization describes its mission as supporting children and vulnerable people affected by poverty, addiction, violence, illness, and social exclusion. Its programs and organizational information are available through the LAPS Foundation.

None of these business or charitable activities establishes a connection to Epstein’s crimes. They provide context for why Elkann moved within international circles that sometimes overlapped with Epstein’s social network.

Why Elkann Appears in the Epstein Record

The reviewed documents do not reveal a large body of direct correspondence between Elkann and Epstein.

Instead, Elkann appears primarily through third party communications, invitations, Epstein’s descriptions of their relationship, and questions asked during later investigations.

The evidence falls into five principal categories:

  1. A 2006 email in which Epstein said he had called a person identified only as Lapo.
  2. A 2009 exchange in which Epstein offered to contact Elkann for a former beauty pageant titleholder.
  3. Messages in which Epstein reportedly described Elkann as a friend and as intelligent.
  4. Invitations and event correspondence connecting their names.
  5. Congressional testimony and statements made during the 2026 investigation of the released files.

The importance of each document depends on what it actually says. An invitation does not prove attendance. Epstein’s use of the word friend does not prove that Elkann used the same description. A congressional question does not prove that its premise was correct.

The 2006 Email About “Lapo”

One of the earliest potentially relevant references appears in a May 2006 email exchange involving Epstein and Ana Maria Gomes Macedo.

Macedo asked Epstein whether he had spoken with someone she identified only as Lapo. Epstein subsequently wrote that he had called Lapo and left a message.

The surviving text does not include a surname.

Investigative writer Bekah Day examined the exchange and connected the reference to Lapo Elkann through the surrounding Italian and Brazilian social network. That identification is plausible, particularly because later records establish that Epstein knew Elkann.

It is not proven by the 2006 email itself.

The EpsteinWiki examination of Ana Maria Gomes Macedo and Epstein’s Brazilian connections correctly distinguishes the document from the inference. The email establishes that Epstein called someone named Lapo. It does not conclusively identify that person as Lapo Elkann.

Researcher R. Howard Stone reached a similarly cautious assessment in the Sleuthsletter review of the claim.

The document should therefore be described as a possible early Elkann reference, not definitive proof of contact between Epstein and Elkann in 2006.

The 2009 Former Miss South Carolina Exchange

A clearer reference appears in a May 2009 email exchange between Epstein and a woman whose identity was redacted in later government releases.

Earlier copies reportedly identified her as a former Miss South Carolina USA titleholder. An attorney contacted by FITSNews described the woman as an Epstein victim.

During the exchange, the woman asked Epstein to pass her email address to a person believed to be Lapo Elkann. She said she had wanted to contact Elkann and remembered him as genuine.

Epstein responded that he would reach out to Elkann on her behalf. He also discussed Elkann’s widely reported 2005 hospitalization and described Elkann as “great and super smart.”

The exchange is significant because it shows Epstein presenting himself as capable of contacting Elkann directly.

It does not establish whether Epstein actually contacted him, whether Elkann received the woman’s information, or whether any meeting occurred.

The woman’s request appears to have originated with her. Nothing in the available exchange shows Elkann asking Epstein to locate or introduce women.

Epstein’s Conduct During the 2009 Exchange

The context surrounding the Elkann discussion is important.

After agreeing to contact Elkann, Epstein asked the woman whether she had a female friend for him and wrote that they shared the same taste. The message is preserved in EFTA02442503.

This language is evidence of Epstein’s own conduct and his continued interest in obtaining introductions to women after his Florida conviction.

It is not evidence that Elkann participated in the request.

The sequence instead demonstrates how Epstein used his international contacts as social currency. He could offer an introduction to a prominent person and then redirect the conversation toward his own interest in women.

The distinction between Epstein’s networking methods and Elkann’s knowledge or conduct is essential.

Epstein as an Introducer

Epstein frequently positioned himself as an intermediary between wealthy people, academics, politicians, models, business executives, and young women.

The 2009 correspondence fits that pattern. Epstein did not merely claim to know Elkann. He offered access to him.

That conduct provides evidence of a network relationship because Epstein apparently believed an approach to Elkann would be credible. It does not reveal how close the two men were or whether Elkann regarded Epstein as a trusted friend.

No reviewed message from Elkann confirms that he requested the introduction.

No reviewed document establishes that Elkann knew the woman had been victimized by Epstein.

No reviewed record establishes that the proposed introduction was connected with sexual activity, trafficking, or recruitment.

The “Friend” and “Dear Friend” References

Additional released records reportedly contain language describing a friendship between the two men.

According to the FITSNews review of the Justice Department production, EFTA00649579 contains a 2014 invitation sent on Elkann’s behalf in which Epstein was characterized as a dear friend.

A separate collection of messages, EFTA00749648, reportedly contains Epstein describing Elkann as a friend to a redacted correspondent.

The evidentiary value of those descriptions is limited but real.

They support the conclusion that Epstein and people communicating on Elkann’s behalf presented the relationship as socially familiar. They do not establish the frequency of their meetings, the nature of any private conversations, or Elkann’s knowledge of Epstein’s criminal conduct.

The phrase dear friend may also reflect the conventional language of a social invitation. The complete document, sender, recipient, and purpose must be considered before treating it as a precise statement about the depth of the relationship.

The London Reception

EFTA02114794 concerns a London reception associated with Lapo Elkann, photographer Wayne Maser, an exhibition identified as The Italian, and the Robilant and Voena gallery.

The email subject specifically names Elkann and the London event.

The correspondence records that Epstein would not be able to attend.

This is useful negative evidence. It establishes that Epstein received an invitation or request for a response concerning an event featuring Elkann. It does not establish that Epstein attended or met Elkann at the reception.

Event correspondence frequently appears in Epstein’s records because assistants managed invitations, social calendars, travel, and responses. Inclusion in that system demonstrates a social connection or attempted connection, not necessarily a private relationship.

The Wider Italian Network

Epstein maintained relationships with numerous people connected with Italy, including business executives, fashion figures, models, diplomats, academics, artists, and members of prominent families.

Released records contain references to members of the Agnelli and Elkann families, although a family reference should not automatically be attributed to Lapo Elkann.

For example, EFTA02389138 contains correspondence mentioning John Elkann and identifying him as Lapo’s brother. That proves the family relationship was discussed within Epstein’s network. It does not establish that Lapo participated in the underlying conversation.

EFTA02430386 includes names from Italian media and social circles, including Alain Elkann, Lapo’s father. Again, a reference to a relative does not establish Lapo’s involvement.

Independent researchers have explored these overlapping relationships. Bekah Day’s examination of photographs associated with Ghislaine Maxwell and the Agnelli circle provides useful social context, while R. Howard Stone’s Italian connections research maps relationships among Italian families and Epstein associates.

These investigations can identify leads and patterns. Their conclusions must still be separated from what each primary document proves.

Family membership is not evidence of criminal participation.

Photographic Evidence

No authenticated photograph reviewed for this article places Lapo Elkann together with Epstein, Maxwell, or an identified Epstein survivor.

The released files contain photographs involving members of international social circles connected with the Agnelli family. Researchers have also identified photographs of more distant relatives and associates.

Those images should not be relabeled as photographs of Lapo Elkann unless he has been reliably identified in the image.

A photograph of a relative does not prove that Elkann attended the event. A photograph of Elkann at an unrelated public gathering would establish only his presence at that gathering.

The current reviewed photographic record does not establish that Elkann visited Epstein’s homes, aircraft, island, ranch, or other properties.

Lesley Groff’s 2026 Congressional Testimony

Lesley Groff worked as an assistant to Epstein and handled scheduling, correspondence, appointments, travel, and other administrative matters.

During a June 9, 2026, transcribed interview conducted by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, investigators asked Groff whether she had ever scheduled or arranged a massage at an Epstein property for Elkann.

Groff replied that she did not know who Elkann was and answered no.

She was then asked whether she had arranged massages of any kind for Elkann or the other people in the list presented by investigators. She again answered no.

The complete exchange appears in the official Lesley Groff congressional interview transcript.

Her answer is significant because it directly rejects one potential form of involvement.

It does not prove that Elkann and Epstein never communicated or met. Groff did not manage every aspect of Epstein’s life, and other people sometimes arranged his activities.

Nevertheless, her testimony provides no support for a claim that Epstein’s office scheduled massages for Elkann. It supplies affirmative testimony to the contrary.

The fact that congressional investigators asked the question does not prove that they possessed evidence that a massage had occurred.

Thomas Massie’s 2026 House Floor Statement

On August 31, 2026, Representative Thomas Massie addressed the House while promoting a new effort to force the release of additional Epstein records.

Massie named Elkann among a group of people he said should be investigated and prosecuted in connection with Epstein.

Contemporary accounts of the speech were published by WHAS11 and Law Commentary.

Massie made the statement while beginning a discharge petition related to the proposed Epstein Files Transparency Act II.

The inclusion of Elkann’s name is important because a member of Congress publicly called for official investigation. It does not reveal which document, witness statement, or investigative lead Massie relied upon when naming him.

No public criminal charge against Elkann was announced as part of the speech.

No court adopted Massie’s characterization.

No public jury has found Elkann to be an Epstein coconspirator.

The statement should therefore be recorded as a serious congressional allegation and demand for investigation, not as an adjudicated fact.

What the Congressional Record Does Not Resolve

The Groff interview and Massie speech create an unresolved contrast.

Groff testified that she did not know Elkann and never arranged a massage for him.

Massie subsequently identified Elkann as someone he believed should be investigated.

Those two events are not necessarily contradictory. Massie may have relied on evidence unrelated to Groff or massage scheduling. He may also have relied on investigative material that remains redacted or unpublished.

However, the public record available for review does not explain the basis for Massie’s conclusion.

Until the supporting evidence is identified, the accurate formulation is that Massie made the allegation and requested investigation. It is not accurate to state that Congress proved Elkann was an Epstein coconspirator.

The 2005 Hospitalization

In October 2005, Elkann was hospitalized in Turin following a widely reported drug overdose.

The incident received extensive international coverage because of Elkann’s position within the Agnelli family. Contemporary reporting described the emergency as involving cocaine and a Turin apartment.

The event later appeared in Epstein’s 2009 email discussion about Elkann.

Its presence in Epstein’s message shows that Epstein knew or repeated publicly reported information about Elkann. It does not establish that Epstein was present during the incident or had private knowledge of it.

The hospitalization was not an Epstein related event and should not be used as evidence that Elkann participated in Epstein’s crimes.

The 2016 New York Incident

In November 2016, New York authorities accused Elkann of making a false report after an episode involving drugs and an alleged kidnapping claim.

The allegation generated widespread reporting, including a Reuters account of the original charge.

In January 2017, the Manhattan district attorney declined to prosecute the case. The disposition was reported by Reuters.

The complete outcome matters. Elkann was not convicted in that case.

The episode has no demonstrated connection to Epstein and should not be treated as character evidence supporting separate Epstein related allegations.

Elkann’s Disclosure of Childhood Abuse

In 2013, Elkann publicly stated that he had been sexually abused as a teenager while attending boarding school.

The disclosure was reported by Reuters.

His account of surviving abuse is part of his personal history. It does not prove or disprove any later allegation involving Epstein.

It should not be sensationalized or used to imply a causal relationship between Elkann’s childhood experience and unrelated adult conduct.

Absence From Other Major Records

The sources reviewed for this article do not establish that Elkann appears in an authenticated Epstein flight log.

They do not establish that he travelled to Little Saint James.

They do not establish that he visited Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse, Palm Beach residence, New Mexico ranch, Paris apartment, or Virgin Islands properties.

They do not document a payment from Epstein to Elkann or from Elkann to Epstein.

They do not establish that Elkann retained Epstein for financial, tax, legal, or estate planning work.

They do not contain a verified victim statement accusing Elkann of sexual abuse.

They do not establish that Elkann requested massages, women, or introductions through Epstein.

The absence of those records does not prove that no additional evidence exists. It defines the limits of the presently reviewed public record.

Investigative Assessment

The public record supports describing Lapo Elkann as a social contact or associate within Epstein’s international network.

The 2009 correspondence is the strongest direct evidence. Epstein offered to contact Elkann and spoke about him with apparent familiarity. Later friend language and invitations reinforce that conclusion.

The evidence is nevertheless sparse compared with the records involving Epstein’s financial clients, employees, pilots, recruiters, and frequent visitors.

There is no verified public record of Elkann flying on Epstein’s aircraft, visiting his properties, receiving a massage, making a payment, or being accused by an identified survivor.

Massie’s 2026 floor statement materially increased the public significance of Elkann’s name. It created a legitimate need to identify the documents or witness information on which Massie relied.

Until that basis becomes public, Massie’s characterization must remain attributed to Massie.

The responsible conclusion is that a documented social relationship existed or was claimed by Epstein. The currently reviewed evidence does not establish that Elkann participated in Epstein’s criminal enterprise.
