Death investigation position: Mark Epstein rejects the official finding that Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide. The New York City medical examiner and the United States Department of Justice continue to support the suicide conclusion.

Why Mark Epstein Matters

Mark Lawrence Epstein is a New York real estate owner, former printing entrepreneur, arts institution trustee, and the younger brother of Jeffrey Epstein. He matters to the public record because his companies controlled or managed New York properties used by Jeffrey Epstein, his name appears in flight and correspondence records, he was a potential heir after Jeffrey Epstein died, and he became one of the most persistent public critics of the official conclusion that his brother died by suicide.

No public criminal case has charged Mark Epstein with participating in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse or trafficking. The records below establish family contact, travel, property relationships, corporate overlap, and public claims. Those facts require scrutiny, but they do not by themselves establish knowledge of, assistance with, or participation in criminal conduct.

Mark Epstein occupies several distinct roles in the wider Epstein record.

First, he was Jeffrey Epstein’s only sibling and remained in contact with him across decades. Released correspondence documents family discussion, travel planning, financial conversation, political gossip, and personal exchanges.

Second, Mark Epstein’s real estate structure overlapped with places used by Jeffrey Epstein. The most important example is 301 East 66th Street. Corporate and property records, reporting, rent documents, building notices, invoices, and email traffic show that Ossa Properties and 301/66 Owners Corp were central to the building’s administration. Jeffrey Epstein used apartments there for staff members, guests, associates, and women in his orbit. The building therefore belongs in any serious reconstruction of Jeffrey Epstein’s New York infrastructure.

Third, Mark Epstein appears in flight records. Those records establish travel with Jeffrey Epstein and, on some flights, Ghislaine Maxwell, Sarah Kellen, Donald Trump, members of the Epstein family, and others. A flight record proves that a person was listed as a passenger. It does not prove knowledge of another passenger’s conduct.

Fourth, Mark Epstein became a prominent advocate for reopening or expanding the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s death. His campaign helped keep attention on genuine failures at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. It also includes assertions that remain unproven. A responsible account must distinguish documented detention failures from claims of homicide or evidence suppression.

Finally, Mark Epstein’s status as a potential heir and his connection to Jeffrey Epstein’s financial and property network make unresolved questions about ownership, value transfers, corporate control, and inheritance legitimate subjects for documentary investigation.

Early Life and Family

Mark Lawrence Epstein was born in New York City on July 14, 1954. He and Jeffrey grew up in Sea Gate, a gated community at the western end of Coney Island in Brooklyn. Their father, Seymour George Epstein, worked for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation before retirement. Their mother, Pauline, commonly called Paula, worked as a school aide.

Mark was about 18 months younger than Jeffrey. Published profiles have identified his family nickname as “Puggy.” He attended Stony Brook University and graduated from Cooper Union’s School of Art in 1976.

The released fiftieth birthday album prepared for Jeffrey Epstein contains contributions attributed to both Mark and Seymour. Mark’s page reads, “To simpler days. Happy 50th,” followed by his name. Seymour’s contribution describes working for Mark after retirement beginning in 1983 and recalls a family trip to Israel in 1985. The album documents a continuing family relationship. It does not establish involvement in Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes. An independent transcription and page index are available in Ellie Leonard’s birthday book project.

Released correspondence also shows the brothers discussing childhood addresses and family telephone numbers in January 2017. See EFTA02665617. A January 2019 exchange concerns a family birthday and a mathematical image. See EFTA02627349. These records demonstrate that the brothers remained in contact close to Jeffrey Epstein’s final arrest.

Printing, Art, Marine, and Investment Businesses

IZMO Productions

Mark Epstein entered the commercial art and printing business after art school. He incorporated IZMO Productions in 1986. Published accounts describe the company as a producer of screen prints, posters, and limited editions. Its work was associated with artists including Peter Max and Herb Aach.

Jeffrey Epstein reportedly participated in art sales before his finance career, including sales connected to Mark’s printing activity. That early commercial connection is relevant because it predates the better known real estate and finance overlap. It does not, on its own, explain the later wealth of either brother.

A May 2014 email shows Mark sending or discussing an IZMO video with Jeffrey. Jeffrey responded that the video had been removed. See EFTA01926687. The surviving record confirms communication about the company or its media, but the short exchange does not reveal a larger transaction.

King Graphic Technologies

Mark Epstein co-founded King Graphic Technologies in 1994. Public descriptions characterize it as a large format printing company. The business belongs to his independent commercial history and should not be collapsed into Jeffrey Epstein’s financial companies without documentary support.

Atelier Enterprises and IZMO Marine

Mark also operated marine and charter interests through Atelier Enterprises and IZMO Marine. Reporting links him to an approximately 80 foot yacht named Izmo. He later donated the vessel to the Marine Science and Nautical Training Academy in Charleston in 2018 after efforts to sell it. Reporting at the time also identified financial pressure, including a tax lien, as part of the surrounding context.

Epstein Acquisitions

Epstein Acquisitions was formed in 1987 and was later dissolved. Public records identify the entity, but available reporting supplies little detail about its transactions. Its existence should be recorded without attributing activity that has not been documented.

Dara Partners and Ossa Properties

Mark Epstein’s most consequential business activity was real estate. Dara Partners and Ossa Properties became associated with a portfolio of New York cooperative apartments and commercial property.

Published reporting traces part of this portfolio to Leslie Wexner’s Parkview Financial. Parkview acquired a cooperative complex known as Dara Gardens. Mark Epstein became a general partner of Dara Partners and helped establish or operate Ossa Properties around 1991 and 1992. By 1993, Ossa reportedly owned or managed more than 500 apartments across four New York cooperative buildings.

The precise path by which assets moved from Wexner connected entities into structures controlled by Mark Epstein is not fully transparent in the public record. The Wall Street Journal’s investigation reported that Mark said Jeffrey alerted him to an investment opportunity. The Journal also reported that partnership structures made Mark’s wealth difficult to assess. The Real Deal’s 2026 profile revisited the portfolio and its origins.

Ossa Properties remains publicly associated with Mark Epstein. Commercial listings identify him as its president. The company should be understood as both a property manager and a point of documentary overlap between assets associated with Mark and spaces used by Jeffrey.

For background on the wider financial structure around Jeffrey Epstein, see Jeffrey Epstein’s Companies, Trusts, and Financial Infrastructure and Leslie Wexner.

301 East 66th Street

Ownership and control

The 16 story building at 301 East 66th Street contains about 200 apartments. Reporting has identified 301/66 Owners Corp and Ossa Properties as controlling or managing a large majority of the units. More than 150 apartments were reportedly held through the cooperative ownership structure associated with Mark Epstein’s companies.

The property previously had a connection to Leslie Wexner’s business network. Mark has said Jeffrey told him about the opportunity. Reporting identified a transferred mortgage of approximately $7.24 million, but conventional public documents explaining a standard arm’s length purchase were difficult to locate. That gap does not prove an improper transfer. It does make the transaction history a legitimate subject for title, mortgage, partnership, and tax record research.

Business Insider’s investigation documented the concentration of Jeffrey Epstein associates at the address. The Real Deal examined the property connection between the brothers. Independent researcher Ellie Leonard’s analysis of 301 East 66th Street compiles ownership and occupancy clues. Leonard’s work is useful as investigative analysis, but its inferences should be checked against deeds, cooperative records, leases, and court exhibits.

Building management records

Released records repeatedly connect Ossa Properties and 301/66 Owners Corp to the building’s operation.

  1. A 2018 notice about a building service employees strike was sent in connection with a J. Epstein account. See EFTA00541036.
  2. A resident notice documents building administration. See EFTA00569895.
  3. An invoice concerning apartment 8H names 301/66 Owners Corp and Ossa Properties in connection with Karyna Shuliak. See EFTA00525536.
  4. Delivery instructions also place Shuliak at apartment 8H. See EFTA00533574.
  5. A building record distinguishes categories of owners and tenants. See EFTA00571580.
  6. A 2012 payment record shows a $4,500 rent check from MC2 Model Management to Ossa Properties. See EFTA02701063 and the related production at EFTA00616936.
  7. An Ossa letter concerns management at 301 East 66th Street. See EFTA02425330.
  8. A 2019 fire safety notice further documents the building’s administrative structure. See EFTA00554459.
  9. An email concerns painting six apartments and includes communications involving Richard Kahn or HBRK. See EFTA00544547.
  10. Renovation specifications appear in EFTA01949313.
  11. Guest entry and lodging coordination appears in EFTA02189270.
  12. A separate exchange refers to guest units 11J and 11P. See EFTA02088306.

These records demonstrate operational coordination. Some are duplicate productions or related copies of the same underlying event. They should not be counted as independent transactions merely because they carry different evidence numbers.

Residents, companies, and visitors

Reporting connected the address to Sarah Kellen, Nadia Marcinkova, Adriana Ross, and Lesley Groff, the four women identified as possible co-conspirators in the controversial 2007 federal nonprosecution agreement. Reporting also connected the building to attorney Darren Indyke and to entities including 9 East 71st Street Corporation, NES LLC, Aviloop, and SLK Designs.

Apartments identified in reporting or released records include 7J, 8A, 8H, 10B, 10F, 10N, 11B, 11J, and 11P. The evidentiary basis is not identical for every unit. Some are documented through invoices or email. Others appear in reporting based on interviews, property research, or disclosed records. Listing a unit does not establish who legally owned it at every point in time.

Jeffrey Epstein also used apartments as secure lodging and meeting locations. Released correspondence examined by Ellie Leonard shows Jeffrey offering an apartment at the building to Steve Bannon and describing the location as secure, with a rear entrance. See The Epstein and Bannon Emails. Reporting and correspondence also document visits or stays involving former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak. See Epstein’s Emails to Ehud Barak.

Survivor centered significance

The building’s importance is not limited to famous visitors. Survivors and reporting have described Jeffrey Epstein’s use of apartments to house or control young women and girls within his wider system. The combination of concentrated housing, employer relationships, model management connections, transportation, and administrative support could reduce visibility while increasing dependence on Epstein’s network.

The available public record does not establish that Mark Epstein knew the purpose of every apartment or the experiences of every occupant. It does establish that entities tied to him controlled or managed a building that Jeffrey used extensively. The unanswered question is therefore not whether the overlap existed, but what Mark and Ossa personnel knew, when they knew it, what records they retained, and what oversight was exercised.

Saint Model and Talent

Mark Epstein formed Saint Model and Talent in December 2005. The company used 30 Vandam Street in Manhattan, a property associated with Mark. The address also overlaps in reporting with E Management, an entity connected to French modeling agent Jean Luc Brunel.

The timing and address make the company relevant because Brunel and MC2 Model Management were connected to Jeffrey Epstein’s recruitment environment. See Jean Luc Brunel’s Modeling Network and Jeffrey Epstein v. Jean Luc Brunel and MC2 Model and Talent.

However, public reporting has produced little evidence that Saint Model and Talent operated as an active agency, represented models, recruited anyone, or participated in abuse. Corporate formation and an address overlap are leads, not proof. The priority records are incorporation papers, tax filings, bank records, client agreements, payroll, insurance, licensing material, and correspondence.

The Disputed J. Epstein and Company Affiliation

Some corporate or court materials have described Ossa Properties as affiliated with J. Epstein and Company, Jeffrey Epstein’s financial advisory business. Mark Epstein disputed that characterization and said any listing of him or Ossa as affiliated with Jeffrey’s company was an error.

This dispute should not be resolved by assumption. The correct questions concern formal ownership, shared officers, employees, bank accounts, office services, insurance, payroll, tax treatment, management contracts, and authority to act. An address or employee overlap may show practical coordination without proving common ownership. Conversely, a denial of formal affiliation does not answer whether personnel or services were shared.

Released documents show Ossa employees or agents performing property work that benefited Jeffrey Epstein and his circle. They do not, standing alone, prove that Ossa was legally part of J. Epstein and Company.

Listed passengers include Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, Mark Epstein, Nadia Marcinkova, Brent Tindall, Larry Morrison, Larry Visoski, Tami, Teala Davies, and others. Direct releases include EFTA01699932 and EFTA02778657.
  19. September 20, 2004, Palm Beach to Teterboro, aircraft N908JE. Listed passengers include Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, Mark Epstein, and Sarah Kellen.

The pattern is predominantly travel between the New York area and Palm Beach. None of the 19 indexed segments listed above is, by itself, evidence that Mark Epstein participated in sexual abuse. The records do establish repeated travel with individuals central to Jeffrey Epstein’s network. Any further conclusion requires corroborating testimony, scheduling records, communications, expenses, or evidence concerning the purpose of a specific trip.

Released Correspondence

2013: A troubling age exchange

On October 10, 2013, Mark wrote to Jeffrey after meeting a woman whom Jeffrey said he had brought to the United States and who had worked for him for about a year. Jeffrey said she had been to the island and ranch. Mark replied with a joke suggesting she might have been too old, and Jeffrey answered that she was 21. See EFTA01951641.

The exchange is troubling because age was explicitly treated as a subject of humor in a conversation involving Jeffrey’s employment and properties. It does not establish that Mark knew of an underage victim or that the woman discussed was underage. The record should be quoted and interpreted with that limitation intact.

A July 2013 exchange discusses a birthday and a Caribbean location. See EFTA00965119.

2014: Travel logistics and company media

In July 2014, Jeffrey Epstein’s staff coordinated a Paris pickup involving Mark. See EFTA00993244. Copies or related productions appear at EFTA00993248, EFTA00993252, EFTA00679795, EFTA01919126, and EFTA01919271. These are not necessarily six separate arrangements.

The IZMO video exchange appears at EFTA01926687.

2016: Trump material and political context

On October 13, 2016, Mark forwarded an attachment titled “Trump 1_trump.pdf” to Jeffrey. See HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_033176. The filename establishes that the attachment concerned Trump in some manner. It does not establish its contents or provenance without review of the attachment itself.

In November 2016, Mark jokingly asked Jeffrey which cabinet post he was seeking. See EFTA02668379. The message establishes political conversation, not influence or appointment activity.

2017: Family and travel

The January 2017 family history exchange appears at EFTA02665617. A September 2017 exchange concerns whether Mark was in Florida or the Virgin Islands. See EFTA02632595.

2018: Markets, health, and Steve Bannon

In February 2018, the brothers discussed an energy exchange traded fund and a possible short position. See EFTA00898508. Related copies appear at EFTA02533033 and EFTA02533313.

In March 2018, Mark asked what “your boy Donald” was doing. Jeffrey replied that Steve Bannon was with him. Mark then made a vulgar joke asking whether Putin had photographs involving Trump and “Bubba.” See EFTA02501187. Related copies appear at EFTA02501505, EFTA00856596, and EFTA00856617.

The exchange proves that the men discussed Trump, Bannon, Putin, and an imagined or rumored compromising photograph. It does not prove that any such photograph existed. “Bubba” is not identified in the exchange, and attributing the reference to a specific person without corroboration would exceed the evidence.

June 2018 messages concern triglycerides, health, and a bicycle trip. See EFTA00994014 and EFTA00994882.

2019: Continued contact

The January 2019 family and birthday exchange appears at EFTA02627349. A separate New Year exchange appears at EFTA01009804. These records show contact during Jeffrey Epstein’s final year. Mark has publicly said that his last conversation with Jeffrey occurred in Paris on the day before Jeffrey’s July 2019 arrest and that he did not speak with him while he was jailed.

Threats and FBI Correspondence

Released federal records show that Mark Epstein reported threats and harassment after Jeffrey Epstein’s death.

An FBI communication dated August 16, 2019, forwarded information about harassment. See EFTA00146799. In May 2020, Mark asked about progress in tracing a source. See EFTA00146884. Another message asks about address information appearing on LinkedIn. See EFTA00146859.

One threatening message made claims about Mark, his children, Jeffrey’s death, and an alleged partnership between the brothers. See EFTA00104787. The document proves that the threat was sent and retained in the investigative file. It does not prove the sender’s accusations. Threats, taunts, and anonymous assertions must never be converted into factual claims about their target.

An FBI related identity report lists Mark as Jeffrey Epstein’s relative and places him at one degree of separation. See EFTA01256987. Sensitive personal identifiers and redacted data in such reports should not be republished when they add no public interest value.

Mark has said investigators cleared him. No publicly available FBI closing memorandum confirming a comprehensive clearance has been identified. The defensible statement is that Mark has not been charged and that he says investigators found no basis to implicate him.

Jeffrey Epstein’s Estate

Jeffrey Epstein signed his final will on August 8, 2019, two days before his death. The will was filed in the United States Virgin Islands on August 15 and listed an estate valued at approximately $577.7 million. It transferred the estate into a vehicle called the 1953 Trust. Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn were named executors, with Boris Nikolic named as a successor executor.

The public will does not name Mark Epstein as a beneficiary. Had Jeffrey died without a valid will and without a spouse or descendants, Mark could have been the principal intestate heir. The existence of the will and trust prevented that simple result.

Later reporting on draft trust documents said estate planning at one stage contemplated a $10 million benefit for Mark. A proposed benefit in a draft does not establish that the provision survived, vested, or was paid. The public record does not support the claim that Mark inherited Jeffrey’s entire fortune.

The filed will should be read alongside reporting on the 1953 Trust and survivor claims and the Virgin Islands probate context.

The estate later funded compensation and settlements involving survivors. Any account of inheritance must place those claims before speculation about residual beneficiaries.

Jeffrey Epstein’s Death and Mark Epstein’s Campaign

Official conclusion

Jeffrey Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan on August 10, 2019. New York City’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner ruled the death a suicide by hanging. Chief Medical Examiner Barbara Sampson later said she stood firmly behind that determination.

The United States Department of Justice Office of Inspector General documented severe institutional failures. Staff failed to conduct required rounds, falsified records, left Epstein without a cellmate, allowed excess bedding to remain in the cell, and worked in an environment with serious camera problems. The Inspector General nevertheless reported that the FBI found no criminality in the death. See the June 2023 Inspector General report.

These failures are established facts. They explain why skepticism persisted. They do not, without additional evidence, establish homicide.

Mark Epstein’s independent pathologist

Mark retained forensic pathologist Michael Baden to observe the autopsy. Baden later said that fractures in Jeffrey Epstein’s neck were more consistent with homicidal strangulation than suicidal hanging. Sampson rejected that interpretation and maintained the suicide ruling. Coverage of the competing medical views includes PBS NewsHour and CBS 60 Minutes.

“More consistent with” is an expert opinion about relative probability, not a homicide determination. The official manner of death remains suicide.

Video and records disputes

Mark has repeatedly criticized the available surveillance record, the handling of video, the failure to preserve or release all relevant footage, and public explanations of what cameras captured. He renewed those criticisms after later government video releases. His position is that the material does not show enough of the relevant area to exclude another person’s access.

Those criticisms overlap with real documentary weaknesses, including missing or unusable camera coverage. His broader claims of murder, a cover up, or deliberate evidence editing remain unproven. Useful accounts include WPBF’s 2023 interview, WPBF’s 2025 video report, and a 2025 Fox 2 interview.

In a 2026 interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Mark again argued that the death required a genuine independent investigation. The report also noted that he resisted questions centered on survivors and the broader files, focusing instead on the death. See ABC’s 2026 interview.

That emphasis matters. The death investigation is important, but it should not displace the experiences of survivors, the accountability of living enablers, the financial architecture, or the institutions that failed to stop Epstein.

Statements About Jeffrey Epstein’s Conduct

Mark has said that he first learned of Jeffrey’s criminal sexual conduct around 2006. In later interviews, he acknowledged that Jeffrey was guilty of sexual activity involving girls who were “too young.” Mark has nevertheless denied that Jeffrey operated a blackmail enterprise, while at other times asserting that Jeffrey possessed damaging information about powerful people.

Those positions create an unresolved tension. Possessing embarrassing information is not the same as operating a systematic blackmail enterprise. Neither proposition should be stated as fact without records showing collection, intent, demands, transfers, or benefits tied to coercion.

Mark’s public comments also tend to distinguish Jeffrey’s proven wrongdoing from what Mark regards as exaggerated or unsupported claims. Survivor testimony, the 2008 conviction, the 2019 federal indictment, civil cases, compensation proceedings, and Ghislaine Maxwell’s conviction provide a much broader evidentiary record than any family member’s characterization.

Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, and Political Claims

The documentary record establishes several points of contact with Trump related material.

First, Mark was listed on the January 5, 1997, Palm Beach to Newark flight that also listed Donald Trump, Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, Eva Dubin, Celina Dubin, and Didier Cazaudum. Independent researcher Michael Wolff’s publication American Freakshow places the flight within a larger Trump and Epstein timeline.

Second, Mark forwarded the “Trump 1_trump.pdf” attachment in October 2016. See HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_033176.

Third, Mark and Jeffrey discussed Trump and Steve Bannon in March 2018. See EFTA02501187.

Mark later claimed that Jeffrey described Trump as a “crook,” that Trump and Jeffrey had once been very close, and that Trump telephoned Jeffrey after the 2016 election. He has also claimed that government releases were being edited to remove politically damaging material. These are claims attributed to Mark. They should not be presented as independently established facts unless corroborated by recordings, call records, complete files, or additional witnesses.

The direct emails are stronger evidence than retrospective interviews because they are contemporaneous. Even so, they prove only what the messages actually say.

Cooper Union

Mark Epstein graduated from Cooper Union’s School of Art in 1976 and became deeply involved in alumni governance. He served in alumni association leadership, was named Alumnus of the Year in 2002, joined the Board of Trustees in 2004, became vice chair in 2007, and later chaired the board. Cooper Union’s own 2013 board announcement states that his term as chair had ended by December 2013.

By 2009, public donor recognition placed his cumulative support in a range from $500,000 through $999,999. His institutional role was therefore both financial and governing.

Mark resigned as a trustee in June 2015 during the crisis over Cooper Union’s finances, the introduction of tuition, student protests, and scrutiny by the New York attorney general. Several trustees resigned at the same time. Mark defended the board’s sustainability strategy, criticized organized opposition, and withdrew future financial support. Contemporary accounts include Inside Higher Ed and The Observer.

The Cooper Union record is relevant to Mark’s independent public life. It should not be interpreted solely through his brother. It also provides a paper trail concerning his stated wealth, donations, governance decisions, and institutional relationships.

Other Nonprofit and Cultural Roles

Mark Epstein has been associated with the Humpty Dumpty Institute, an organization focused on humanitarian programs and international dialogue. Historical nonprofit filings identify him as a director. Public tax data also records a loan from him to the organization of at least $100,000 in 2014. See the Humpty Dumpty Institute and ProPublica’s nonprofit record.

He served on the board of Exit Art, a New York cultural organization. Reporting and nonprofit records described a $75,000 loan from Mark before the organization closed in 2012.

He has also appeared on the advisory committee for the Schneider Concerts at Mannes. See the Mannes program page.

These roles demonstrate access to arts, education, diplomatic, and cultural networks. They do not establish a connection between those organizations and Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes.

Litigation, Property Disputes, and Tax Liens

In Echelon Photography LLC v. Dara Partners LP and Mark Epstein, a New York court considered a landlord and tenant dispute involving commercial space at 515 Greenwich Street. The case caption identifies Dara Partners, care of Ossa Properties, and Mark Epstein as respondents. The court addressed possession and damages after a lockout dispute. See the official New York court opinion.

The case is useful because it confirms Mark’s role in property operations and provides sworn testimony. It is not evidence of participation in Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes.

Ossa has also been associated with 515 Greenwich Street, a five story office property of roughly 60,000 square feet. In April 2026, reporting said Mark was exploring a sale and that the property could be valued around $75 million. See The Real Deal’s property report.

The Wall Street Journal reported more than $190,000 in state and federal tax liens recorded against Mark over the period from 2006 through 2018, while also noting that at least one earlier state lien had been paid. Later reporting identified a federal lien of approximately $18,775 and a lien of about $67,000 around the time the yacht was donated. Because liens can be satisfied, released, amended, or duplicated across indexes, current status should be checked against the original docket before publication of any present tense claim.
